“Traffic England "The B road to useful information"”

Steering my partner by phone through the rush hour traffic along the M4 /M40 corridor I require quick and up-to-date information. At the moment Google Maps Traffic keeps winning with the speed and accuracy of display. Traffic England in 5 minutes managed to show 5% of what was going on. It was incredibly slow and was still hogging bandwidth as I redirect the browser to an alternative traffic site. In the end I had to close the viewing tab just to get Traffic England to let go. “Like the Motorways, it's getting slower”

Checking the M5 West side of London is becoming painfull. Turn on the camera option (well try to) and you can spend some 15 minutes before they appear (and then only sometimes) Come on, if you're going to offer traffic maps and what should be usefull addons like warning signs and traffic cameras the information has got to be available quickly, currently it's worse than useless, even teletext is quicker & better! “Due to the recent bad weather the traffic england site...”

Due to the recent bad weather the traffic england site has again been overwhelmed, as it was last year in heavy snowfall.
The answer to the problem is to suspend the map view without which the site is realatively useless.
The following notice appears.

To meet the current high demand, we have switched to a lighter version of the site. The main difference is that the map has been disabled. For live traffic information visit the Traffic Flows and Disruptions Search sections.

“Traffic England used to be a really useful resource...”

Traffic England used to be a really useful resource for people like myself facing a long commute to and from work.
Since the site was 'upgraded' to use active scripting, the response time is so slow as to make it at best hopeless.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it !

Please Highways Agency, think about your users and get back to being a quick and accurate resource for the average joe ! (read more)

I agree is now very slow. And over the snowy pre-Xmas period (2009) it has become so slow that it is unusable; frequently it just does not show the first map page. Selecting a bullet for cameras (say) frequently fails.

“Trafficengland.com is a good UK government website...”

Trafficengland.com is a good UK government website which has very accurate traffic information.
The nice thing is that you also get information on traffic affected by weather. Plus you can see the motorway warning signs and be pre-warned of problems. (read more)
