I have owned the so called CPI for near enough a year now and I have to say i wouldnt have bought any other bike. if you want to learn gears and you want to have fun, this is your bike. I started out like the rest, passed my CBT and wanted something cool and different. When i bought my CPI, an 08 reg that had 4 previous owners and in excess of 8000 miles, i didnt really expect much from it but as i grew to know it and know biking i grew to love it. Mine was in pretty bad nick but reliability has not been an issue. Engine is a gem and the gearbox is ok. Couple of false neutrals hear and there and a gearbox leak but hey ho, its only a year. mine tops out at low 40s and takes an average amount of time to get there. they will do 45 mph all day at 10,000 rpm. they are outstanding and highly recomended!!!!!!!!

“Cpi sm50 coolent problem ?...”

written by JackDean23 on 21/06/2013

I have recently bought a 13 plate sm 50 and due to a warped head and white oil and petrol in the raidiator I fited a 70cc big bore kit. After running the bike in I'm now at 300 miles since the new head and barrel was fited and have discovered that there is now black oil in the radiator. Can anyone suggest why this might be ???

Water seals have gone, a comman problem with these bikes, it lets gear box oil get on to your water cause many problems. A good way to check if it is the water seals is to open your radiator cap put your finger in and if there is any grey creamy or sometimes black oily substance then it will almost curtainly be the water seals.

I had the same problem with my cpi sm 90 it's the gear box oil getting in to the water, the problem is the water seal, it's either completely gone it is in its way out, it a common problem with these bikes, ex specially when putting on a bigger head.

“CPI SM 50, 57 PLATE.”

★★☆☆☆

written by on 04/05/2013

I got the bike off eBay a few months ago, The person who sold me the bike wasn't the most genuine person, The bike had a few problems what he didn't tell me about. I got the problems fixed, New brake light switch, New indicators, New battery. I then was riding it for about 2 weeks and i noticed another problem (Petrol leaking out of Carb, When i say noticed, It was pouring out the Carb. I decided to put it in a bike garage they did some good work, Cleaned Carb, Added new fuel taps, ETC. It runs great, Then i kind of overdid i rode it for about 6 hours in breaks of 10 minutes.. The spark plug went and i have now had to fix that. I decided to spend a lot of money getting this bike to tip top condition. New spark plug, New 21MM race Carb, 70cc Cylinder kit, Racing crankshaft, Race piston, Yasuni Race exhaust fully DE-Restricted. The bike runs great and is very very powerful now. Like new (Full Rebuild) Overall i wouldn't get this bike as all you get is problems. To get it reliable you have to replace half the parts with good parts (Aprilia ones) it is not worth the trouble, Buy a either a Derbi, Aprilia, Yamaha. Also the electrics are rubbish.

The First Question I'm going to ask is : Have you de restricted this bike?

If so, your bike will need re jetting ! The bike when bought is pre jetted to a 'restricted' standard by CPI. It's stupid but you should rejet your bike also give the bike a good check over, It could also be a buckled wheel and your disc brake is making the vibration ! :)

I love my cpi, i bought this from new and when it was restricted it was painfully slow. once i had my first check over on it i de restricted it very early, it was worth it the gears are alot longer and smoother will go between 55-60 but if a different exhaust would be added it would be even faster. had a couple of problems but nothing major. all in all a great first time bike.

“CPI SM 50 2011”

written by CPISM502011 on 29/10/2011

Hi there, i've owned my CPI SM 50 2011 for roughly a month now as i got it gifted to me on my birthday. I really enjoy the bike and it looks stunning, couldn't ask for much more even if i wanted to :) i've noticed in the last couple of days that when im changing gear from 4th to 5th, or 5th to 6th- the gear seems to either jump out and rev or when changing up it seems to not go in gear properly and rev which you have to then have a second attempt at putting it into gear which seems to do second time round... but at this stage there is a que of traffic behind you on a 30 road and im only doing 25 -_- wondered if anyone could help as i have no idea if its either teething problems as it has only done 200 miles or if the gearbox/transmission is mashed , getting quite worried :/ thanks Lee F

Hi Lee, the bike should have the gearbox oil changed at 200 miles. Have you taken the bike back to the supplier for a second opinion? It maybe just a little ajustment needed. Mark www.all2wheelers.com

you may already be in 6th gear and jumps, so when changing gear up again the revs will go down slowing the bike. if this happens drop down a gear to bring the revs back up.

“should have steered well clear”

★★☆☆☆

written by Alandsmith on 10/10/2011

I loved the look of this CPI SX 50, Great size six gears. Everything has gone wrong on it. Parts hard to get can use Aprillia RS 50parts and its a AM6 engine so look for those in the search for the parts I'm sure you will need if you buy one of these bikes. The back brake caliper to which I needed two over a few months were nearly £100. all parts expensive there is a good seller on ebay {scooters and bikes} They are helpful unlike The importer of CPI bikes, CPIMOTO they are unfriendly and little help and very over priced for parts. Sometimes takes 3 weeks to get parts to you. not much in stock I wrote to Tiwan where bike was made they were no good and don't sopply direct. Give this bike a miss. Its a nightmare.

“Great bike but...”

★★★★★

written by on 01/10/2011

The bike overall is good. When i bought the bike the first thing i found was it is a bit slower than the other 50cc geared bikes out there. The sm exhaust greatly reduces power and is under geard so i ran out of revs in 6th gear but only did a TRUE 45mph which is not that good. If your going to leave this bike standard steer well clear HOWEVER! if you upgrade the cylinder like i did, i fitted an airsal 70cc aluminium kit (all minarelli AM6 kits WILL fit the engine as is based upon the minarelli AM6 engine) and i also fitted a doppler er1 exhaust or any minarelli AM6 exhaust will do. The results are OUTSTANDING people, it now out accelerates both my mates 125cc 4 strokes and thrashes my mates aprilia rs50 with a polini 70 kit, still lacks in top speed but bigger front sprocket will solve this! If your a willing to spend £300 on these upgrades i guarentee you will be happy! Fuel economy before i fitted the 70 kit was 85mpg and i ride it flat out all the time. Electrics are a bit shabby but again if you spend £20 on wire etc they will live up.

i have owned a cpi sm 50 from new, it has been de-restricted fully ( technigas exhaust, rear sprocket 48t, front 13t, did racing chain and has been upjetted) it hasnt ever broke down on me and is very reliable have not had anything repaired and has also done 4k miles. i get 61mph on top end and also accelerates very quickly. im not too sure from whick year onwards but i do beleive it is 2008 cpi use enduro 2 engines which are more reliable compared to the first ones. overall i think it is a great bike as i use it everyday to college and work and even socialising with friends with no problems what so ever. i would recomend this bike to anyone especially it is cheaPER comapared to most geared 50cc motos

“I have the CPI SM 50 (red and black) What can you say,...”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 05/01/2010

I have the CPI SM 50 (red and black) What can you say, it's a nice looking bike and when it goes it does go well even when it's restricted but the electrics and the water pump let it down.

The alternator is very unreliable and doesn't do a good enough job of charging the battery, the wiring really needs totally redoing when you get it and a good start is to change the battery for a more powerful one.

Problems I've had are the battery always draining down so it was rewired which solved that problem, then put in a larger battery to give it a bit more juice, the lack of a kick start means in cold weather it can put real strain on the battery.

The water pump occasionally fails and either pumps water on to the floor or in to the gear box so putting in better seals on the engine are a good idea. Finally it's worth changing the LED indicators as the water gets in to it them and then they don't work either but this is partly solved once it is totally rewired.

In short it's a nice bike when you chuck lots of money at it and get loads of mods done, the main problem is it is made in japan for their weather and it doesn't cope very well with the british climate.

After riding bikes for 8 years up to 250 I was really pleasantry surprised with the CPI SM 50 2008. Its acceleration doesn't compare to other 50's especiallty scooters. Its six gears gives the perfect control you could want with a 50cc engine. Many comments on its look mainly because it looks like a 125 due to its shape and height. I would recommend to anyone who doesn't just want to get from A to B but wants to really enjoy riding as well!

★★☆☆☆

written by on 20/04/2009

Had the CPI SM Supermoto 50 over half a year now and have had alot of problems. Its in and out the garage like a yoyo which is annoying and very expensive. Its had to have a new piston and crackshaft after 3000miles, rear chain feed to the rear sprocket snapped off the sway bar and got wedged in the front sprocket. Ive now got electrical issues, luckly i was on the way to the garage to pick up a part they ordered for me when it chonked out on a round about. They manged to get it to start with a new spark there and then but it cut out on revs under 5000 or so, so was completely unrideable. Can't wait to get a car tbh after this.
But dont get me wrong when it wants to work and when i first got it, it was amazing. Unfortunatly these problems just seem to let it down hugely. :( shame really.
