“Daelim Daystar 125 - UK year round daily rider - '65 plate”

★★★★☆

written by bobtek85 on 30/03/2017

There aren't many daystar reviews that I found overly comprehensive when I was looking to buy a new bike. My background is purely 125 so far, and in the 3 year's I've been riding i've been unfortunate in that I've had 3 bikes too. My first was a Chinese CG copy (never buy Chinese, unless you're a mechanic/handy). The second was a Honda CBF125 that I truly adored. However some idiot knocked me off, ran away, and left me bike less and broke. When it came to buying the new one budget was low so I found myself on the hunt for another CBF only to find that anything in my price range was really very old. Plus I wanted a cruiser anyway. A bit of research took me to the Daystar 125; modern injection engine, highest compression ratio I've found on a 125, good looks, liquid cooling, its in both black and ORANGE (so much so it needed capitals), and a history of Honda partnership with the company: "1981 – Began a technical partnership with Honda for the development of motorcycles. This partnership continued for over 20 years." Plus a host of other boasts that were neither here nor there to me. Positive reactions online existed so I threw caution to the wind and bought it brand new. P&D motorcycles, Wakey w.yorks, where I bought mine gave a 4 year finance deal that cost me no more than £52 a month (winner). It also came with a 2 year warranty which I've only just had to tap into after 14 months ownership (more later). My bike is easily on the road 38 out of the 52 weeks in the year. Its my daily commuter - term time - throughout winter as well as summer so it sees heavy use and all whether conditions. So far I've covered 8125 km/5048 miles in 14 months. The good stuff: It rides low and comfortably - I've done a 4 hour stint on it whilst out with a friend and never once got back ache, numb-bum, palm ache or repetitive strain in my wrists. A common problem on either of my previous 2 bikes. Its fast too; the large comp ratio linked to the 12 tooth sprocket made it feel like a rocket. I since changed the stock 12 tooth to a 13 tooth CG sprocket to give me better up hill tug. I live in Sheffield, if you saw the tour de france when it started in yorkshire then you'll understand the nightmare that is Jenkin Road hill. The low ride and large tyres give a sense of safety on the road and absorb most of the crappy pot holes in the road. I'm 6'3" tall and 18 stone - thats a lot to put on a tiny bike - but I've had a happy 63 mph cruise on the flat despite the wind. Tbf you still need to get into 3rd to maintain 49 mph up a hill but its a 125, what do you expect. There's a few of nice extras if you don't mind spending the money - wind visor for the front, luggage rack I found on eBay for the back (I installed mine myself). Chunky handle bars. I'm a big lad so the usual bike handle bar feels a bit flimsy to me, these don't. Plastic body covers - may sound like a negative but it does reduce weight and won't rust in the winter. The included chain tensioner is a handy feature. The less good stuff: Chain and sprocket change - nightmare. Actually thats harsh, my mate has a triumph that involved half the engine removal, so its not a nightmare really. But that chain tensioner makes life more difficult than is really necessary. Getting wheel alignment correct is a 4 day ordeal of riding, adjusting, riding, adjusting, riding, etc. You see; the right hand side is obstructed by the exhaust - nigh on impossible to see without 4 hands and 2 torches. Plus, on mine, the notches aren't quite uniform so its more by feel than by eye. The stock rear tyre isn't great in wet conditions - slippy-slidey squeeky-bum time in the height of winter. Fantastic in summer though! Sparks fly on the bends at times, and you're making "neeer neeEER NEEEER" engine noises in your helmet out of giddy excitement. Under the seat, between wheel and engine, is a big vacuum that stores grot and mud perfectly. You can't get your arm in to clean it unless you're a toddler and you need to take all the cowling off to get at it with a hose. But you will need to after winter. On that subject this is also where the wire that links the battery to the ECU hangs free without any protection. I found that little nugget out this morning when she wouldn't start. The cable had split and the copper corroded into green goblin powder! Thank chuff for that 2 year warranty eh. However, annoyingly thats my Saturday morning gone for repairs. I'd advise anyone buying this bike to get a rubber tube and some cable ties around that bad boy to prevent further headaches. External bits that hold pipes into place rust easily, as do the bolts around the wheels. Keep on top of that with ACF50 wherever possible. I do it regularly on my exhaust to stop the chrome pitting. Keep the joints lubed. It sounds obvious but on dry weeks after a big rain fall you can lose your gear shifter, it will stick something awful. So yeah... I keep up with the service schedule (full service history with the dealer keeps the warranty) and try to keep tabs on what's going on underneath - as much as my limited skills will allow anyway. I noticed within the first 6 months that standard petrol will gum up the oil and reduced the performance. Now I just use the high octane stuff and it really helps, plus my consumption is lower: I average about 151 km/93 miles to a gallon of fuel (about £6 in Sheffield these days). I love it. Might even upgrade to the 250 when I take my direct access as it isn't much more expensive than the 125. Hope this helped you make your decision.

“Great cruiser bike for starters and urban cruising”

★★★★★

written by mr7yh on 07/09/2015

Really great and enjoyable bike as a cruiser type (if you like cruisers). I bought my Daelim Daystar 125 Fi Black Plus 1 yr ago 2nd hand and did now 2200km. I am very satisfied: a very nice cruiser look with a ferfect feeling to ride and to enjoy Life: it brings a realy relaxed feeling. Perfect for cruising up to 80km/hr. I found 60-70km/hr perfect for relaxed riding from village to village. Anyhow, here in Belgium that is the speed limit between most cities. At 100km/hr it is at the edge for the engine. Speed indicator is over-indicating by 10km/hr. Sound is nice, look is nice, low consumption (ca 3 ltr/100km), low weight, little smaller than the bigger cruisers, nice Harley Davidson style copy, easy to control and to ride. Low initial cost and low maintenance cost, good mechanical construction (I had only 1 minor issue: few months ago oil leakage on the left-front suspension due to dirt from rubber; after cleaning with a special tool from my garage it was ok for 40 Euro),....Riding is great comfort even with low back pain as I often have. I added Sissybar, crash bars, LED fog lights, reflecting stripes on the wheels, USB power, 2 saddle bags, a little clock and temperature indicator. The only drawback is: lack of power for a longer ride and uphill with girlfriend on the back. I use my bike every day unless it rains or freezes. Is also perfect inside the city: very easy to control. It was a perfect learning bike for me, starting from zero. I am looking for a more powerful one now, but have a hard time to let this one go. Only the lack of power is my reason to change (and I am still doubting). Other items are still perfect for me. For me: it deserves a 5 star rating in this category. I sure would buy this one again.

Hi.
I bought it on a website, a low cost brand from Spain.
Take into consideration that aftermarket parts are more susceptible to rust. If your motorbike is always outside, in humid environment, keep an eye on it.
I still love that bike, but have now a more powerful Kawasaki Vulcan VN800 classic (800cc). From yr 2000
The Daelim never failed to start even in the winter. The Kawasaki has no electronic injection and needs more attention.
Succes with your bike. Enjoy life!
Cheers

I did not modify my mufflers becaus the sound is quite good for a cruiser type . If you want more silence, can do. But to my opinion it will be a waste of money and not easy to get the sound that fits the taste of your ear. Mufflers are also not cheap....
Anyhow wish you success on your search.

“i bought this bike even though i'd never heard of a...”

written by Ninxsey on 05/01/2012

I saw a Daystar in a breakers yard ready for scrapping so i picked it up cheap. Whoever owned it previously must have binned this bike on every corner every day! It had no indicators, snapped levers, no brake cylinder, bent bars, no mirrors, smashed front mudguard, dents all over the tank....etc..etc...it was only 5 yrs old and looked as if it'd spent its last year propped up left side to the sea wind!. I had a hobby custom airbrushing bikes and helmets for extra pocket money, it went really well for a few years then i had 2 kids............ As they grew a bit i decided to do a small project for myself purely to get me back into the swing of it again after an 8 yr rest, that's when i picked up the Daystar even though i'd never heard of 'Daelims' i thought it'd be a pretty cool cruiser after a bit of work and that's all i was bothered about. During the project i looked into them a bit more and was pleasently surprised to find they are a dirivative of Honda, of which i've owned a few and think highly of. Parts wern't too much of a problem, many an enjoyable evening hunting on ebay. I found there's an abundance of spares on ebay france, and google translate made it a piece of cake. My biggest single purchase was the front brake lever with brake master cylinder, £57 for a genuine part direct from japan. Not too bad at all. This was done through www.hyosungsource.com who are great for Daystar parts. I spent the winter getting all i needed and when the warmer months arrived i set about rebuilding and a spray job. It went on the road in the summer of 2011 and was ready for selling....but i've kept it because it's a great bike. It is so comfy to ride and such fun, I was very surprised. The engine chrome isn't suited to british weather, and i must admit the 1 into 2 exhaust and acres of plastic chrome engine casings seemed like a naff attempt at pretend big bike looks but overall you can forgive it as it seems to work, just, but just is good enough. With its bullet proof Honda engine it loves the revs and just keeps going. It gets lots of attention and i've lost count of the times i've heard

“Brake Fault”

★☆☆☆☆

written by report1 on 22/08/2011

I brought my Daelim brand new from a dealership in Greece (KOS), and used it to ride to and from work only 10 KM away. On the way to work last week the front brake failed and the back one went 'sluggish'. I had it recovered by a local mechanic and was informed the front brake cable had rubbed against the wheel and frayed, causing the fluid to drain. The back one was experiencing a similar problem. When the company I brought it from picked up the bike, they tried to say I must have had an accident or hit something. The bike is pristine and has only 459km on the clock, and has definately NOT been involved in any 'incident'. Has anyone else experienced a similar fault and problems from 'sellers' trying to avoid repairs on warranty ?

written by Deezer on 01/05/2010

It looks fantastic, till you get up close and see the poor quality chrome, the engine casing on mine lets it down, but that is the only fault I can find. It looks massive especially with the size of the tank, which has to be the biggest of all the 125 Harley wannabies, giving great range between fill ups, which is also a downside because at the fuel pumps is always where people want to tell you what a cracking bike you have. Mine is brown and cream which I think is the best colour combination, gives it that retro american low rider look. It's just a shame that Daelim haven't taken the same line as their Korean rival Hyosung and made bigger bikes, I'd love a Daelim Daystar 650!
A V twin would be a fantastic upgrade to the single cylinder, As it would give it the sound to go with the look. Oer all its a great start to cruising, not for the speed freaks though, it's a bit too heavy to ever be fast, but I love it.

I love the Daelim Daystar 125; Beautiful, just love looking at it, like it's your girlfriend! Low consumption and very reliable, almost needs no repairs if well ridden and looked after.
Side boxes may be attached using Givi universal kit. Low cost. Handles with confidence on wet roads.
Spares readily available from dealer, some Honda parts interchangeable because similar.
Going up steep hills at low speed is no problem for my 250 lb body. I am so happy I got this one in very good condition at almost half the new price.
And I have covered long distances at single stretches without the engine complaining one bit.
However, I am most happy riding the Daystar on country roads rather than urban roads because it takes some effort to squeeze between cars at roadlights; it not being so nippy as smaller machines.
