    Good Points: Good powerQuite accurateHandsome

Bad Points: TriggerRidiculous twang from the internalsNot economical in purchase terms

General comments: I purchased a new Gamo Hunter Elite from SIR (now Cabela's) last fall. I have been able to put about 2000 rounds through the gun in the interim. First off, the trigger was deplorable. I understand that Gamo triggers range from acceptible to horrendous; mine was decidedly in the latter camp. A switch to the GRT-III unit fixed this easily enough. I was not optimistic about the potential longevity of the supplied scope and mount, so I elected to install a Hawke 3-9 and mount. Ironically, the new optic lasted all of 200 rounds before piling up, so back on went the supplied scope which has thus far, not skipped a beat. A day with the chronograph shows velocities in the 870 fps range with 8.2 g pellets; my gun favours RWS Meisterkugelns. The 'twang' from the gun is violent and has not settled down much since new. As a result, I have shipped the gun out for a full disassembly, lube, and tune. I will report back once I have had the rifle returned and spent some time with it. In stock form, the HE was substantially more raucous than my 48, over 100 fps slower, and less acccurate. So, do I recommend this rifle? Well, not especially. It could feasibly perform very well with the combination of trigger/tuning mods. However, the current price for this rifle through SIR is ~$430 before taxes and shipping. The trigger and tune will add another $150-$200 to the total, not including new glass/mounts. At the $600 mark, the consumer can purchase a much more sophisticated rifle, crafted by one of the German or British companies. That said, I do like the way the rifle shoulders, and it is a looker (in my eyes). I have an affinity for springers, so perhaps I am cutting Gamo some slack. IF they were able to offer this rifle with a better trigger and less obnoxious internals, I predict that they would sell a metric tonne of them in short order. As it stands, there are better choices at this price point.

This is a very nice gun. The scope is well matched to the gun. I shoot at a measured 30 yards and the rifle is very accurate. Mine likes pellets in the 8 grain range and puts them out of the muzzle at a measured 907 fps. Not too far off from the hype on the box. For a bit of excitement on special occasions only, a Raptor will give you that loud crack to keep the no gunners on edge. I feel you get what you payed for with this gun. Everything has the look and feel of quality except the trigger. I ...
