“The Pace DVB-T gives sensational picture and sound...”

★★★☆☆

written by Andy. on 29/06/2002

The Pace DVB-T gives sensational picture and sound quality! Gives me BBC4, but I pay my licence fee and expect far more from free to view than one extra (worthwhile) channel. The other 15 are not of much interest to me!

I'm a little confused, this review seems to be of the FTA Digital service at present rather than the Pace hardware.

Is this a review of the Pace DTV adapter or a review of FreeView? I found the Pace box very, very good on it functionality and design, although you have to have a SCART telly. The text services are many times quicker (faster than the Web)
As for Freeview itself the shows are currently quite limited, but it is still a very new service. But as you are only paying the TV Licence and for the box what you are getting is very respectable.
Teletext's service on Channel 9 has a new TV Navigator which is really good!

The only problem with the "BBC4 is the only thing worth having" comment is that its an opinion that is completely unrelated to the Hardware (it's a hardware review - doh!) and which will very soon be outdated when the full service starts.

<br>Other than that - well done !

Very useful to know that the product does the job and is easy to use. Also useful to know that BBC 4 is all you get that is worth having.

“Well after much toil, I finally got my mits on the new...”

★★★★★

written by James. on 23/04/2002

Well after much toil, I finally got my mits on the new pace DVB-T free-to-view adapter. Interestingly it includes a subscription card reader in the bottom!? Still installation is a doddle, there are no trailing wires to pull the tiny box off the top of the TV, both power and aerial feed are in to the scart socket, which is quite neat, keeping all the cables out of view.

The remote is well designed, and offers pretty much all the functionality you will need, but don't lose it, there are no controls on the box at all! The control also offers volume control which means that you won't be juggling with remotes.

The box gives you all the advantages that digital TV has to offer, straight through your aerial. There is at least 15 channels you can get. Text is on its way, pending a free upgrade which comes through your aerial as soon as they get the bugs out of the software. The box offers a now and next function for all channels and a channel guide, which is fine, but looks a bit ugly. One very cool feature is a progress bar for the current program, so you can see how far through the program you are.

The picture quality can't really be faulted, and the box recovers well from signal glitches, and you don't seem to get a black screen like others, it tends to get some in-line blocks instead. That said, I have only seen them whilst fiddling with the aerial cable. The video output as per the specification can be set to RGB, S-Video or composite, so there is no excuse for signal degradation. The box works well with widescreen and is a worthwile upgrade just for this alone.

In my setup I used an internal aerial on top of the TV, (not ideal) but I still managed to pick up 21 channels glitch free, I'm about 15 miles from the sutton coldfield digital transmitter.

My advise would be to check the digital broadcasting website for coverage by postcode, but I can say that I had no problem with an internal aerial despite being so far away from the transmitter. If not, I would recommend you find your local electronics whiz shop, and ask them, you could probably buy a different aerial (digital needs slightly wider band aerials than you may be using) but this should only be an issue if you are in a low signal area. I can tell you that multipath reflections (knows as ghosting or multiple images) don't seem to be a problem for the box. I think that because its designed for the non technical to install, you seem to be able to get away with a much less than ideal setup.

At the moment, some services like text don't work, but that's because the software inside the box is playing safe. When the geeks at PACE decide that they have got it working without any bugs, you can expect quite a few new features; they say this summer. (2002)

Pace have limited the supply of boxes because they are worried about digital terrestrial, which makes it hard to get at the moment, but I suggest you get one if you can, because come what may, digital is the way forward, and due to the upgradability of the box, whatever happens you get the channels we do now.
