I have gone on to this site especially to write a review. This is the first time I have ever done an online review and it reflects how strongly I feel about how bad a product this Thomson 160gb digital TV recorder is. Now I don't know about anyone else but when I spend £90 on something I expect it to work. I didn't have a problem with the noise, I expected it from a product which is basically a computer BUT for a start the fast forward and rewind do not work on recorded programs - they keep jumping back to the start. The box fails to record programs, randomly - sometimes you are informed, sometimes not BUT you are never given a reason. It occasionally records without sound. The box is extremely unstable and constantly needs re-booting. I rang the helpline and went through the process of getting the latest software on there, made no difference whatsoever. This Thomson name is just a front for Top Up TV. Their primary role is getting people to subscribe to their service so they knocked up this cheap box and pre-loaded it with all their settings to flog it. But of course they compromised on quality which resulted in the box being so poor. I took it back to the shop - they said they were getting 5-10 back every day and recommended I get a Humax instead - for an extra 40 quid. It is great doesn't go wrong at all. Please do not buy the Thomson under any circumstances.

When it works it adds a host of useful functions to your TV for a very low cost. It crashes regularly, and mine has now fully seized - ie I can no longer record anything or pause tv etc I am going out to spend a bit more money on something a lot more reliable

I loved the box when I first got it and like many others am not interested in the TUTV. So it did seem a good replacement for my video when it died on me. Think I might go back to the old style VCR

The product would be marvellous if it was reliable. Unfortunately it is not and hasn't been from the first day we set it up. We also know of other people who have the same model and have experienced the same type of problems.

What seemed like good value turns out to be an irritating piece of equipment that leaves nice messages such as... 'Your scheduled program failed to record' It doesn't give any reasons why it failed, so pretty pathetic really. Bad choice, steer clear.

If it worked it would be a great box. Unfortunately it doesn't for me. Freezes regularly, looses recordings, fails to record and the fast forward and rewind facilities are poor as they tend to make random jumps. All the updates seem to have no effect on the problems.

Seemed to work OK for a few weeks, but now (approx 10 months old) it is increasingly unreliable. It has regularly locked up and dumped planned recordings, but its new trick is to delete your whole programme library, watched or un-watched. Reading this website, there seems little point in taking it back as it looks like they all do it. Mine also has never given me the advertised recording hours. I get half the number at best. Don't buy!

For £79.99 for £160gb, you're certainly getting your moneys worth. Although, I have yet to find out more about the USB connection. I do feel Thomson could do far better and there is room for vast improvement. Other than that, it works really well as a receiver, but needs improvement on the recorder side.

It really is a shame as this is a very easy to use machine but unfortunatley all the up dates are to enhance features but only seem to add other faults. They need to get to basics and sort out what the real problems are and this would be the best machine on the market, but due its unreliable basic faults I could not recommend it. Lets hope Thomson read these reviews and realise customer satisfaction is everything, all we want is the recorder to do what it says on the tin.

The manual for my Thompson digibox says if you are having 'technical problems', to turn the power off and on, to reboot. I have needed to do this up to 5 times a day. The major problems seems to be when deleting old recordings. But the software is not only unreliable - its hard to use and slow.I have an old Sony digital receiver on the same antenna - and the quality of the picture is 5 times better.

I will now be taking my Thomson 160gb back to the supplier and will request a full refund. I did in fact like this make as it had all the things I needed. The problem is although the shop is happy to exchange for another I still do not get the answers as to why each one I have goes after a few weeks. I do feel that there must be a fault which has not been yet sorted Thomson

The 160 gig claims upto 120 hours of recording time but only shows 70 hours avalable, so I phoned Thompson, they said there was a fault with the box's and were due to send a patch, that was 3 weeks ago. Then ff. rew. pause ect. all started going wrong. Took it back to Commet, they were excelent, gave me a full refund, no problem, defo shop there again !

I bought 2 of these things 6 weeks ago and have had nothing but trouble with them. Spoke to Comet customer services today and the bloke on the line actually laughed at me when I told him my problems. Says he's had the same problems and gone back to Sky +. They're going back pronto!!

Completely useless. I took my first one back for a replacement but have exactly the same problem with the new one. I lost the last episodes I had saved of 3 series, plus lots of other programmes. The whole point of having a recorder of any sort is having something you can rely on to record programmes. This is going back and I am never touching another Thomson product again. I think I will go back to a DVD recorder with hard drive.

I replaced it with the 250 gig version and all the problems that have been mentioned have gone away. Like someone else has said, the firmware is constantly updated and it seems that the Thomson people have got on to the problem and are trying to sort it. I think that these 2 machines were rushed on to the market without being fully tested for bugs. Note: when the machine updates it freezes everything as well and then you have to start watching from the beginning.

I was horrified by the noise, when TV on can hear it still but when trying to sit in a quiet room is impossible. Makes as much noise whether turned on or off, has to be left in standby mode to receive updates. 4 days into trying it out I am so in love with everything it can cleverly do I'm trying to think can I live with the noise? Unfortunately don't think I can so it will have to go back.
