I have been playing this game for about 3 years. It is better than Counter Strike in my opinion. Ii gives you a realistic feeling that you could never have in other action game.

“Day of Defeat is the war that took place in Europe,...”

★★★★★

written by zoso1386 on 11/09/2004

Day of Defeat is the war that took place in Europe, not Asia or Africa. That leaves out the Russians and the Japanese. Secondly, the Canadians were pretty well British. The comments about pilots and navy, if you have noticed, there are no other military sections in the game except for infantry. On the map caen, it wouldn't make much sense to add a little badge saying "Canadian" having it on the soldiers' sholders. Don't get me wrong, Canadians did do a lot, but as far as the game goes, it focuses on the Americans vs the Germans. Why aren't you guys complaing for the resistance forces, there were a lot of those. What about the poor Italians?

I think the game is good as it is. We're not playing the game because, "Oh look. I can be Canadian". You play the game because you use mind, skills, and teamplay to get the job done. You're not supposed to sit around looking at each others' uniforms saying "Oh look, new boots". No. Now, I think you guys were unfair with the rating you gave. The maps are far better than any battlefield map. I actually believe I'm fighting for something when playing DoD, cause the maps are basicly all cities. Who wants to play open warfare, when you can set up defences or assault a building. Far better then running for 5 mins to find a tank killing your butt and doing it over and over again.

“This game I bought by mistake, I had somehow thought...”

★★★★★

written by CCMagazine on 16/01/2004

This game I bought by mistake, I had somehow thought that it was Call of Duty, but when I got home had it installed and was ready to play it I noticed it said Day of Defeat, dam. But when I hooked up to the internet and joined a game, the game really wasnt that bad, it was quite fun. The first question I had about this game was. Was it released recently? Because the graphics aren't exactly cutting edge, and the sound isnt that great either, but the fun in this game definitly fills in for it. Day of Defeat is a multiplayer game only pitting the Axis verses the Allies in World War 2, they have real guns used such as the M-1 Garand, the B.A.R. , the thompson (that is one advantage over Battlefield 1942, where is the Thompson EA games?). Some battles include destroying Flak Guns on Omaha Beach, Taking control of a forest, Protecting trucks against the axis, and defending and attacking a bridge (this level is quite like the movie Saving Private Ryan). The makers of Half-Life originally released this as a mod, but later tried to make some money on it starting stacking them on store shelves, for the price it isnt that bad, so if you have any extra money (as in extra) at Wal-Mart or a game store buy it if your into multiplayer World War 2 games.

“It is a shame that the Canadians were omitted in The...”

★★★☆☆

written by Keith Picard. on 14/06/2003

It is a shame that the Canadians were omitted in The Day Of Defeat. The Canadian beach head on June 6th 1944 was called Juno Beach. All three Canadian services shared in the assault. Fourteen thousand Canadians landed on Juno the first day.
On August 19th 1942 5,000 Canadians were in the Dieppe Raid. Out of the 5,000 whom landed on that day 2.210 returned to England. Many of these men were wounded. There were 3,367 casualties, including 1,946 prisoners of war, 907 Canadians lost their lives. This country served in Sicly, Italy, Burma, India, Hong Kong, France, Holland and all over the world. I hope you are listening. Keith T. Picard

I think this review is right on. Your map called,"The Battle of Caen" is missing the Canadians. Canadians were the main fighting force in the liberation of Caen. (By the way I believe it was they, The Canucks, who did liberate it). So where are the Canadian skins? I think the company who made this game should have done their war history home work. Lest We Forget. Jonny Canuck SPEAK OUT CANADA.

Sorry, Operation Torch which were the American landings after the main battles for El Alamain and Torbruk were a near disaster for the U.S. troops and they needed major retraining before they were fit for the landings in Italy, etc... basically, at the start of the U.S. involvemnt in the war in Europe, they needed a lot of help from the people who had alredy been fighting the war for almost 4 years.
<br>However, the commitment from the free French, the Dutch underground, the Polish (particularly in the uprising in Warsaw) and so on was far greater than that of the Americans who were making in a tidy buck sending over equipment and so forth that the Brits, French and Canadians are still paying for. Now, I am not detracting the sacrifice the U.S. solders made in the latter part of the war, but the point is they did not do it alone and there had been an awful lot of hardship before they joined up. This is rarely recognised by any of the big media houses in the U.S., Hollywood, EA games and whatever.

Actually the US also fought Rommel in North Africa, and with the combined efforts of the Brits managed to push him out of Africa all together.

The only thing that the USA did was fight Japan, the USA didn\'t even join until Pearl Harbour was destroyed. They defended a few islands and dropped a few nukes and badda bing badda boom they took credit for winning the war. The major players in the war were Britan, Germany, Canada, Russia, and Italy. Sure the US gave the winning blow but thats about it.

Keith T. Picard

Letter Sent to EA Technical Support

<br>Dear Sirs,
<br>
<br>I am writing to you today because of the of the need for Canadian skins. I noticed the Canadian uniform and helmet in your game, Break Through. You call it (IT-6th Army Coastal Div. The Canadians are not only on the wrong side. (You put it on the German side) It also seems that you have forgotten the Canadians and their place in history.
<br>
<br>The Canadians fought in Hong Kong, The Battle of Britain, The Battle of The Atlantic, Dieppe, Sicily, North Africa, Italy, Normandy, Netherlands, The Rhineland and our people served all over the world. Out of a population of 11.5 million we had over 1 million people in uniform, 10% of our population. We had the 3rd largest navy, army and air force in the world. Our soldiers were considered 2nd to none.
<br>
<br>The Defense of Hong Kong: The Royal Rifles of Canada and The Winnipeg Grenadiers. These two battalions were sent to Hong Kong to help bolster the British regiments that were there. When Hong Kong fell they were taken as pensioners of war by the Japanese.
<br>
<br>The Dieppe Raid: On August 19th 1942 5,000 Canadians took part in a raid in Dieppe France. Out of the 5,000 Canadian soldiers that landed on the beaches that day only 2’210 returned to England, and many of these were wounded. There were 3,367 casualties, including 1,946 prisoners of war; 907 Canadians lost their lives.
<br>
<br>On D-Day June 6th 1944. The Canadian beach was called Juno Beach. Approximately 14,000 Canadians landed in Normandy on D-Day. Out of the 14,000 we had 1,074 casualties, of which 359 were fatal. The Canadian Army was the only army to take all their objectives on the first day. I hope that you go to the web sites below. They will explain all.
<br>
<br>http://www.junobeach.org/Centre/index.html This is a web site that you must take the time to look through.
<br>http://www.waramps.ca/military/photos.html Here are some more facts about Canada
<br>http://www.yesnet.yk.ca/schools/projects/canadianhistory/canadaatwar/canadawar.html
<br>These are some of the weapons that we used in ww2. The Sten Gun is missing.
<br>
<br>In the movie, The Great Escape, missing are the Canadian Air men who helped dig the tunnels, Tom, Dick and Harry (the name of the three tunnels). The air man whom got all the documents that the allies could copy, was a Canadian officer.
<br>
<br>I am sending copies of this letter to all concerned. By the way your map called Caen. Missing are the Canadians. It was the 3rd Canadian Infantry Division, supported by the 2nd Canadian Armored Brigade that liberated Caen.
<br>
<br> Sincerely,

Keith T. Picard

Excellent point Alex; that's exactly what I did. I no longer play DOD. Instead, I'm now a BF1942 fan.
<br>
<br>In response to CCMagazine, it would have been nice to include the Japanese as well, since, as you said, they were involved too. But unfortunately they didn't include either, which is one reason why BF1942 has undoubtedly enjoyed more success than DOD. If you're going to make a game based on historical events, it better be historically correct. By saying that the Americans and Germans were the "main forces" we're completely neglecting the fact that this was a World War and that many other countries were not only involved, but key to it's resolution. Since Canadian forces made a not-so-insignificant effect during the course of this war, and the events portrayed in this game, one would expect to see that reflected in the gameplay. Without it, one gets the sense that the entire war (at least from the eyes of the developers) was just the Americans vs. the Germans.

Ok, stop complaining about there being no Canadians, its just having the main forces in World War 2, which were The United States, and The Germans. Your complaining about 1 map not having Canadians, which was Caen. Why would the makers of the game want to make completely new models and weapons for one single map. They don't have the Japanese and they were a large force in World War 2. If you feel so offended that they dont have Canadians then go start your own modding team and make whatever changes you want.

I appreciate your furthering my limited knowledge of WW2, Russians, and etc. Everyone had a part to play, and died for just to give us a warm bed, a roof over our heads, and the priviledge to go to a supermarket when we feel like it...thanks.
<br>
<br> What I really mean't by my comment was that if you take out one element of WW2 as we know it today, the war would not have ended when it did. There are those who would disagree, but without Canadians in the war it might have caused the war to go on for alot longer. Take Canada out, and you leave a very large hole.
<br>
<br> Such as the battles over Britan...some of the top pilots were the best pilots of the battles. I do know this for a fact, if Canada did not join and help the Brits out when we did, Britain could have very well been overrun, and defeated....How about the Naval corvettes which made safe passage for so many ships of north atlantic? How about D-Day? How about anything our fathers did in WW2?
<br>
<br> The only country that still holds true to remembering is Britan. Especially when we had our problems with Spain and over fishing, the Brits stood up, and backed Canada and said "we remember what you did for us in WW2".
<br>
<br> Also, correct me if I'm wrong. I did some quick reading, and there was a Canadian platoon that made it deeper into Russia than any other country, and fought beside Russians troops.
<br>
<br> I do understand that every country that fought agaisn't Hitler should have a credit somewhere in DOD, and perhaps one day, all countries can be represented in a WW2 game...but for now I'll keep reading, and searching.
<br>
<br> Chat later everyone!

Technically WWII wouldn't have ended unless the Russians had invaded and successfully captured Berlin, and a select few European scientists immagrated to the west to help design the first Nuclear Bomb in the Manhattan project.

I whole heartly agree with all the above. My stats on WW2 are slim at best, but I do know this much, if it wasn't for the canadians, the end of WW2 would not have ended when it did.

I agree with Keith. Canadians played a key part in WWII and shouldn't be forgotten by the American authors of this game. It's a great game, but adding some Canadian skins, as well as a scenario/map involving Juno beach, would add a whole new demension to the game, while keeping it as historically accurate as it tries to be. As Jonny mentioned, the Battle of Caen should be fixed as well.

Liked the game also. I also have the same question about "Where are the Canadians?"
<br>
<br>HIstorical accuracy does add to game playing qualities.... Canada had third largest air force, trained the most Allied pilots, had the third largest navy IN THE WORLD. Canadians spearheaded landings at D Day, breaking the German defensive backs at the battle for Caen, and drove up Holland and accross the Rhine. The Germans nicknamed the Canadian army the "British SS". We were known as tough and ready fighters, full of vim and courage.

written by Terry. on 16/04/2002

I've played many PC games over the years, some were good and some were o.k. But Sierra Day of Defeat Beat 2 game tops them all! You have classes where you choose from. You could choose to be on the Allies side, or the Axis (German) side. You could be a seargeant, armed with the M1 Carbine,..or even the cool lone wolf sniper, armed with his trusty .03 Springfeild Rifle.
This game is the best of all first-person shooter games out there. It's a conversion of the popular game Half-Life, and Counter-Strike. Other two great titles as well. So check it out, and enjoy!!!!
