I wanted to share that I have found FanArtReview to be the best place for creativity and mastering one's art. In a short period of time, I have learned more on this site, than I had in my entire life-time. The community is very friendly. The contests are fun and give me the opportunity to try new techniques with my photography. I am always learning from the reviews that I receive for my posted work. Fanartreview promises contests and they do deliver. There are so many contests to choose from. I enjoy the contests (although I don't win many). Win or not, they inspire me to try different techniques and approach new topics with my photography. You get feedback for your contest entries (and non contest entries) which is unique. I joined Fanartreview four years ago. I recommend it to my friends that enjoy photography or are artists. Fanartreview is a community for photographers and other artists. If you enjoy photography I recommend finding a site where you can share your art with others. This is what fanartreview does best. I just joined FanArtReview.com for one month - a wise move I recommend to anyone who may think this is a helpful site. If the object is to learn from the input of others on this site - a community of like-minded photographers - than this is totally a waste of time. I completely agree with you. I've been on this for a month too and it's a complete waste of time. You literally have to spend hours and hours reviewing to get anywhere near the first few pages listings, and unless you can get your work up there you get very few reviews. As it seems that any contest entries, recognized works, best all time, and other awards are mostly judged by the number of reviews you get and who's reviewed them you're pretty much stuffed unless you want to invest alot of money pumping your work to the top all the time! Even if you do have a fantastic photo, but it's only got two reviews it's not gonna win anything for that very fact which is completely unfair.
Unless you're prepared to invest alot of money with Fanartreview you won't get your work acknowledged or recognised fairly, and you can also tell they are bias towards the people that invest the most with them as some of the competition winners, best works etc are absolute rubbish ! I rest my case..... and totally agree you would be better off using your time to do a course or read books to improve your art or photography skills. It's also exactly the same as this on Fanstory!

I pretty much agree. One star is a little unkind 2 or 3 perhaps more like it. Highly unlikely you will sell any work and if your photography is beyond beginner level then good critique is rare ... does happen but rarely.

Initially I thought Fanartreview, what a fantastic site for showing off your photography and the chance to sell it aswell. But once you get to know the site you see the flaws. You review artwork and each one pays a premium in member dollars, you then use your member dollars to promote your own work. Problem is, the site is there to make money and so they sell member dollars, and people who have a lot more money than sense and ability, buy them by the bucket load. So the more you promote your... It is completely demoralising yes, for the exact reasons you've given and I couldn't agree more. The genuine talent is not being given a chance to be fairly recognised and as you point out unless you want to 'buy' your way to the top you don't stand a chance. I also think it is cringingly embarrassing that the poorer works are often contest winners, given awards, etc just because they are on the top page for a week! This sort of bias and set up doesn't help people who genuinely want advice and feedback on their work, and doesn't help the genuinely good works get the recognition they deserve. As long as the people who can afford it keep pumping the money in, in the delusion that they're talented then the site will keep going strong. It's not worth the exasperation getting involved to be honest and I too would give it a miss.

People only give alot of comments for they have to. This is to earn members dollars/cents, so they can enter works and not pay real money to do so. Firstly, in order to be "listed" such that you get numerous reviews, you have to fork out more money than the monthly dues. Top ranked photographers work is often poor quality as they have "paid" for those numerous reviews that get you to the top positions. The contests are not monitored well by entrants or voters and often the winners selected didn't even meet the contest requirements. The site owner says he has "no control over the situation." I've been using this site for a month, give or take. I am a serious photographer who appreciates the art of photography. Most of the members using this site haven't got a clue about the art of photography. Most of the images you see are poorly done snap shots, and if you try to give any constructive criticism, you get a nasty response back saying things like - Everyone else likes my photos. i sort of agree with what you say but it's a bit mean spirited. you are correct with the figure of around 20% (of serious photographers) but then again the site could not exist without the rest of us 80%. i only take snap shots and i'm only using either a 2.5 mega-pixel camera or a 7.1 (point and shoot). i have been lucky though to win two comps and also once 'the photograph of the month competition'. to be honest i can't think of a single great artist or musician who did take themselves seriously and the great henri cartier bresson, even went as far as saying photography should not even be considered an art form. still i respect your opinion and would like to get a response to this message.

I'm a bit torn between both of you because I agree that you do need the less experienced there to keep something going and also that the less experienced can only improve by taking more images and accepting criticism. However, there are ways of commenting without destroying the posters confidence. Having said that, another photog site I belong to never ceases to amaze me with some of the comments dished out by so called pro's. Usually a male pro commenting on a females picture, some truly appalling, out of focus and just about everything else wrong and the comments are bordering on vomit inducing. To do this, I think, is worse than saying "That picture is absolute rubbish" as it leads the photographer into a false sense of security. On the other side of the coin, if you put up an image for review, you should accept with grace, anything that comes your way. You might disagree with it but hard luck; you asked for it in the first place!
