First one replaced under warranty within 3 months after the interior of the freezer fell apart due to not being correctly filled. The second one last just beyond warranty before the same fault occurred and the much mentioned ice build up led to us having a heating element fitted to keep the drain clear. Absolute garbage. We have had ours for around 2 years. In the last year i have had to ditch well over what the unit cost us tn wasted food as the fridge section keeps stopping. As everyone else here is stating this is caused by ice building up in the freezer. The fridge cools by air being drawn from the freezer and blown into the fridge compartment. This has 2 design flaws, the first is the ice build up, frost free really means frost not visible as its hidden behind panels so its usually too late by the time... (read more)

I have had the same problem as numerous reviewers, with ice forming in the freezer comparment. After 3 years it looks as if I shall have to buy a new fridge freezer,(NOT A HOTPOINT). I have had to take inside back panel and fan assembly out 4 times and then go to work with a hair-dryer to remove the large chunks of ice forming over the drain hole. Hotpoint should by now admit that this is a design fault an compensate owners for lost food and man hours to clear the fault. This is the second... (read more)

I have the same problem as everone else with this machine. Water runs out the freezer door with ice building up on the floor of the freezer and finally the fridge does not work. Remove the internal panels of the freezer to find the huge ice build up which blocks the vents to the fridge stopping the cold air getting there.Defrost the unit and everything is ok for a couple of months. Stylish FF but we had a similar problem as a lot of the other reviewers. The fridge freezer collects frost at the back causing it to shut down causing all my food to go off. This happened 3 times and with a baby and expressed milk in the freezer this is a disaster. We managed it a bit longer by regularly defrosting it, but that is just not practical with kids and certain items. Got rid of the FF all together and replace it with a brilliant AEG. (read more)

I've had this FF nearly 5 years and after about a year experienced the icing issue reported by MANY people. After a couple of fruitless "dismantle and defrost" attempts I discovered that the CAUSE of the problem in my unit is the small black drain pipe which exits to a tray at the back of the FF (accessed from outside at the back). Instead of being circular, this pipe was crimped shut at the end and was simply not draining out and had collected some debris, causing water to back up into... (read more)

Perhaps this gentleman works in the trade? I clean my appliance regularly, every 10-12 weeks when it ices up and has to be unplugged for 24 hours (advice given to me by a fridge-freezer ENGINEER RECOMMENDED to me by the SHOP I BOUGHT THE FRIDGE FREEZER FROM!!!). When I ask people what they EXPECT from the WORDS: "FROST-FREE", they all reply the same: "The appliance should not need defrosting - that's what you pay more for!" You can't have it BOTH WAYS, ie: CHARGE MORE for a "Frost-Free" appliance and then tell customers "It has to be regularly, no sorry, MONTHLY, defrosted" and then say that's normal. What sort of fools do you take us for? LOOK UP THE OPERATIONS MANUAL, IT DOESN'T MENTION DEFROSTING THE APPLIANCE ANYWHERE IN IT.

FINALLY, AS COMMON SENSE WAS MENTIONED IN YOUR REPORT, LET'S APPLY SOME:
A Model that needs defrosting, is done from the FRONT OF THE MACHINE, not from the BACK - as is the case with the FF187E. My old Zanussi model (bless it, it worked faultlessly for 14 years with about 2 easy defrosting sessions a year - give me that one back any day!) COULD BE DEFROSTED FROM THE FRONT WITHOUT HAVING TO BE MOVED. IT HAD A GROOVE TO COLLECTED THE WATER AND A DRIP TRAY. What does the FF187E have? Nothing helpful! It has to be manoeuvred forward, and it's quite a bulky machine, then the water collects in the most pathetic excuse for a drip tray on the bottom right hand corner, which you either siphon the water out of or use a sponge, as I do, which is both awkward and tiresome as you can barely get 2 fingers into it at a time. The residue of the water spills out from under the freezer, leaving a great mess. Otherwise, you unscrew it, which I don't fancy attempting as I don't know how easy it is to put it back on again. SO, I ASK YOU, HOW DOES THIS MAKE SENSE? THIS MODEL WAS NEVER DESIGNED TO BE DEFROSTED AND IN THAT RESPECT IS NOT AT ALL USER FRIENDLY.
Written on: 03/12/2009
I found this review not helpful because.he is talking nonsense. A frost-free fridge freezer implies it does not need any form of defrosting and the model he is talking about is not designed to be defrosted and having to do it is a most awkward experience. If you want to buy a model that needs defrosting, you generally pay less for it and find that the defrosting operation is done from the front in a user-friendly way and the process is detailed in the operations manual. This is not the case for this model which can only be defrosted from the back entailing having to pull it away from the wall and making the maximum amount of mess.

Hi i have just seen all the reviews on this f/f. I had this prob with mine.cleared ourselves a few times. Under extended warranty after 2nd visit was told there was a faultt and was fitted with extra wire in the back as apparently there was a fault with these as the wiring did not extend all the way down the back of the panel. Looked like a metal coat hanger. Has done the trick but if we didn't have the extra cover don't know what would have happened. Good luck with your claim
