I'm using AVG free for years now, i've never had a problem accept the mistake they made with the windows dll wich caused my computer to fail booting .. It doesn't slow my computer down (i've heard otherwise but that is maybe because some people still use old computers) It is very easy to use, and its free.. so honestly i think it's the best you can get for ZERO money .. I have tried avast in the past but to my opinion it wasn't up to point yet. Now i hear avast might my as good as AVG and... (read more)

AVG Free is an amazing program and the 2011 update made things even better, I personally like the Social Network Security this is very useful in this day and age, with just about everyone on Facebook & Twitter!
If you haven't got AVG what are you doing! Get protected! Get AVG!

I'm in a suitably good mood!
After years of checking, in the wee hours, that the AVG update function is performing as set, after years of avoiding reboots 'cause AVG "loses" the update settings and the whole damn thing has to be done over, after years of annoying, nagging pop-up's trying to part me from a hard earned dollar for a system that is no better than its peers, after years of being directed to a in-house forum where any criticism is deflected/deleted by the moderators, after...

This is free so why pay more, the most any home user will ever really need. There maybe better packages out there but not by much and I would say not worth the yearly subscription. Also just because another Antivirus finds other 'infections' doesn't mean they were missed. Some use heavy handed heuristics that call anything with 'crack' or 'keygen' in the name an infection. This may be taking a cautious approach, which isn't necessarily bad, but doesn't mean an infection has been missed. I've... (read more)

AVG has a nice interface and is easy to use. It seems to catch viruses fairly well. At first AVG did not slow the system down, but after many updates the computer was getting gradually slower. I then removed AVG and replaced it with Avast. This is not a criticism of AVG though, as it worked for years on my older computer fine. (read more)

Have used the free version of AVG for 4years & found it worked Ok, but wanted to get a paid system on board as my machine does not always close down due I believe to a possible virus getting through from Microsoft. uh uh. You can't take of the AVG because it is in the registry and you have to purchase a removal tool to clear it out. Unless anyone else knows a way!!! (read more)

If you are looking for free antivirus software, AVG is worth your time. I have used AVG for a couple of months, during that time they released several patches for its software.
I discontinued using it once I read that AVG won't be updating the FREE versions anymore. That's the time I switched to Avast which is also a good antivirus software by the way.
Now, AVG again released a free version of their software, but I didn't go back because I feel more satisfied with avast.

I would have like to know that it would slow my coputer down, and that it is very hard to get the program off once. (read more)

Replaced McAfee, Norton and Kaspersky with AVG the free edition and even before my licenses expires.
Very easy to use, very quite and system performance is excellent with AVG.
AVG caught the viruses that were able to fully control my computer when using Kaspersky!!!
A full scan for an infected USB disk with McAfee resulted with ZERO threats detected!
Norton, my god! it kills the computer.

I think this one has been overtaken by its own popularity. Update server timeouts come and go like plagues. Updates themselves seem to be poorly written and implemented - AVG's FAQ website is filled with users complaining that after updates, the application says that the licence (often the free licence) is invalid and AVG must be re-installed. Detection rates have dropped too, which several other solutions proving to be more accurate and better at picking things up. This used to be the... (read more)

I used AVG for years without any problems and with great efficiency. It was easy to use and unsophisticated. Together with Spybot, Adaware and Ccleaner I was very happy.. The newer version arrived during 2008. This included all sorts of add-ons which slowed the system down so that a scheduled scan had to be done overnight not to interrupt using the computer as these scans took more than 3 hours to complete, which on a daily basis was horrendous. After using my computer, running... (read more)

It's an ok product but I seriously wouldn't recommend it. There are more reliable free scanners out there. It missed a virus I had on my machine. I managed to locate the virus's DLL's and EXE's myself, yet AVG reported them as being clean when I scanned them.
In the end the virus destroyed my operation system and I couldn't boot (thankfully I backed up my data recently).
It has also returned false positives on clean files many times (mostly anti cheat software for online games).

I feel if you have Windows Vista, there is no reason to go for a paid version from Norton or even AVG (version 8.0) unless you are a heavy, high risk taking computer operator. Avg free version will be enuf because, Vista is good and bad when compared to XP. I still miss XP's simplicity. Like a Nokia you start loving simplicity. I used a paid subscription to Norton Anti-Virus for a while, but found it to be so clunky and such a resource hog that it was not worth it when I could have the same thing (minus features like file recovery which can be found elsewhere anyway). AVG is frequently updated, and the link scanner has never slowed me down noticeably, though it might if I used a dial up connection. Even then, the feature is easily disabled if it becomes a problem. This is a good program. (read more)

Ignore this nonsense about AVG Anti Virus not being as effective as the commercial anti virus software. I'm in the PC service industry and every other day this finds and removes several hundred pieces of malware from a machine protected with Norton and other such "more significant" packages.
