“Great little phone”

★★★★★

written by on 19/06/2011

Our company bought 58 of these phones on Vodafone to use as business phones. We were using a mixture of Blackberrys, Motorolas and Windows Mobile devices. We were constantly having problems with people using their phones. We were with Orange and when employees were moving around the county they were also moving out of coverage. I'm not sure if this was Orange or the phones themselves but after being sick and tired of hearing Orange's answermachine message. I was told to create a cheap solution with a network and a phone that was quality, easy to use and really didn't cost the earth. I looked at lots of options with blackberry, samsung and even the iPhone but they were all too expensive and some were hard to use. I settled on Nokia to provide phones so I looked at the cheap phones in the low range. I found the Nokia 2630 and after many hours of searching for reviews and other phones I settled on this phone and spend another couple of hours of so trawling through deals from operators. I went for Vodafone in the end as they offered the most competitive pricing and after spending a while on their coverage checker, they were head and heals above the other operators at least in Dorset, Devon, Hampshire and other counties that we spend time in. The phones took a week to arrive off Nokia sim free. I sorted them out in the evening putting all the sim cards in and setting up all the contacts and company settings on them. I was impressed at how easy they were to use and they synced to the computer with the contacts easily enough. Still it took me literally hours again, I had my teenagers helping me as i took it home with me. Vodafone had full bars (only four for some reason on these phones) on all of the mobiles. Even with the plug solitudes it took every plug in my house and some on the 6 way splitters to charge all of them overnight. I stuck the number with an address label on the backs of the phones which can be had by dialling *#100# on Vodafone. I tied up the chargers the phones and boxed them up. After a week of using them, it was obvious the benefits, we were getting more calls through and at our headquarters we had a much better signal meaning that we didn't have to stand next to the window to avoid it 'garbling' the call quality is clear and calls are cheap. Also texting has become much more of a part of our communication with the Nokia's easy texting. The email is cumbersome as is te Internet browser, this has brought some dismay from our ex-blackberry employees who were used to checking email on the move. This hasn't turned up as a huge problem but it is worth baring in mind. After a year only 4 of the handsets have broken out of the 58. These problems are due mostly to mistreatment by emplyees. 3 of them had broken screens with cracks down the display. The other one broke due to water damage, it was dropped in a puddle in Sherbourne. We are now replacing them with Nokia E63s and Nokia E71s which have much better email and Internet facilities as well as 3G. Most of the Nokia 2630s are now knackered so we suggested replacing them all 2 months ago but we decided against it when many of the employees were against it because they liked the 2630s so much. Brilliant little phones, thin as well. The screen could be considered small and the keys go a bit spongy after prolonged use, but this can be fixed by taking off the front cover (screwdriver required) and blowing the dust out from under the keypad. Will be sticking with Vodafone for the forseeable future though if we upgrade to 3G phones then Three looks like a cheap option, not sure their coverage is up to scratch though. I took a quick look and it looked ok but there were some significant gaps.
