“Foiled again !”

★★★☆☆

written by on 06/07/2012

Impressed by its shiny silvery looks, I thought I'd switch from the rotary shavers I normally use. Using it for the first time, I was anticipating outstanding performance whilst all the components were sharp and new and at their best. Alas, totally underwhelming. Moreover, the foil is somewhat fragile, and, when one of the foils split without my noticing, it gashed my cheek with more efficiency than a normal razor. I'm now wondering whether to buy the overpriced replacement blades and foils, and extend its life for a few more years, or cut my losses and return to rotary shavers. Admittedly, the motor component of this shaver is really good, and the rechargeable battery lasts for about two weeks, but the blade/foil combination is not sufficiently durable, and the third small cutter of limited usefulness. I'm not sure if this model is still available, or anything similar from Remington, but if you're thinking about buying one, research it thoroughly.

Had mine for over 2 years but found the third small foil useless, so took it off and the shaver works fine. Now the battery charging life is deminishing and when it gets down to 10-15 minutes it cuts out. New batteries are going to cost me over £26 so will buy a new shaver(Eventually) Not necessarily a Remington though. Always gives me a decent shave and the full 60 minutes charge lasted for around 10-11 days.
Like all shavers the spares are very expensive and the firms know that you HAVE to buy them. Will do a little more research before buying again.

Good shave but as another reviewer described the third foil is pointless. Good battery life - over a week between charges. The shaver head that holds the foils is chromed plastic, on the third set of foils the retaining indents had worn sufficiently to let the foils stay loose. This made the shaver very noisy and uncomfortable to use. Mine lasted two years.

The Remington MS5800 Titanium Washable Shaver gives a nice comfortable shave, although I took a while to get used to this type of shaver (always wet shaved before). I find that in my experience the smaller of the 3 foils keeps getting a hole in it and I have to replace all 3 foils, I find it's a very expensive way of shaving. Won't be buying yet another set of foils, going back to wet shaving.

Same problem with a hole appearing in the small foil. Only realise when it actually draws blood.
I've now removed the small cutter and put some sticky tape over the hole - will have to last until the shaver dies as I've got 2 new sets of the larger foils and cutters and am not going to buy more.
