When I was stranded in Tokyo and had to stay overnight in a hotel due to bad weather and missed my connection flight. Columbus failed to re-imbursed my hotel cost & connection flight fare even though I provided everythings they asked for:- flight receipts, boarding pass, pass port, letter from airline confirming the reason for the delay, stamp on my passport, hotel receipts etc... “Rubbish customer service despite all thei website claims”

Over 17 days trying to renew my travel insurance (As they sent me a reminder by email). After twice waiting ages on an international line trying to pay them money I gave up and sent a web contact form. Automatic reply promises to contact me shortly. Despite further 5 emails to two different addresses (admin and customer services) and another 15 minute wait on the phone I have still failed to get though and not heard back from them (Shortly huh?) except they again chased me to renew by email… Read Full Review

“Friendly...until you actually need them”

Easy to buy and seemingly good value for money. However, once you have a claim, an archaic system kicks in. I has a seemingly simple claim. However, they kept questioning the validity of the documentation I submitted, and introducing additional forms and paragraphs. What should have been a simple claim became so painful that I dropped it. I was left with a really bad taste in my mouth and a bunch of very arrogant emails from their "claims assistance" team. “Do not touch this company”

We have been insured by this company for many years. Being honest citizens we reported that I had needed to be put on a low dose of blood pressure medication. The person on the end of the phone wasted my time by "screening" me gaining entirely positive answers and then saying they wouldn't insure me. Why ask questions if there was no intent of insuring? After having paid around £20 every month for my income insurance for the past six months - without making a claim - I have now received an email informing me that supposedly one of their investors, "Mapfre Assistencia" has decided to withdraw and so is resulting in them no longer being able to offer this insurance! “Avoid if you want peace of mind”

Do not take the risk. There is a reason why you see so many bad reviews of Columbus Direct online. It's because they are not very good at looking after their customers. The point of insurance is that it's a "if the worst happens" safety net. Now, this could be the best insurance in the world but if the company simply do not respond to any e-mails (despite them saying in their correspondence that they will) then... it's really a moot point. Absolute disgrace of a company. I took out insurance with this company as they accepted my existing medical conditions( with the payment of an additional premium of course). When I had to cancel my holiday for medical reasons they have put every obstacle in the way to avoid paying up. “why do they drag it out when you are claiming...”

We have never expected something for nothing. I,was insured through H.S.B.C. and have had no problem whatsoever being reimbursed for the sadly missed holiday. H.S.B.C. were extremely helpful from thestart of my claim, and within a week of receiving all the relevant paperwork they advised me payment would be in our account within five days. “Avoid paying up”

Avoid this insurer at all costs. They will do everything they can to avoid paying up. They are extremely bureaucratic so claims take an enormous amount of time and effort with very little hope of success. “At best incompetent!”

Whilst on holiday in Tenerife I suffered from a stroke, although only relatively young at 54. Fortunately our Daughter was on hand at home to deal with the insurance. She spent hours on the phone sorting things out. They were absolutely incompetent. I initially lost the use of my left hand side so wasn't particularly well. It took five days before I could stand. I paid a lot of money to make sure I had the correct insurance for my daughter who has a medical condition, we had to cancel our holiday to turkey as she needed brain surgery. Columbus spent 4 months trying to avoid paying us. I the end I had to threaten going to the papers and telling them our story!! Needless to say they suddenly paid us. I took out the standard £1 each way travel insurance through Columbus when booking my rail. I couldn't travel because of the snow. “Appalling 'service'”

After 6 months, I have finally been reimbursed some of the considerable outlay I made while my husband was taken ill in Spain in September last year. “As a result of my five year old son being diagnosed...”

The claims management firm have spent the last four months doing everything they can to stall payment of the claim and not pay for items that are clearly covered. We had to cancel a holiday last September because my wife's father was taken to hospital shortly before we we supposed to travel (he subsequently died). Exactly the same with us. It took 6 months to get payment and the incompetence was staggering. Letters sent to old addresses, lost paperwork etc. I got hold of someone who oversaw the latter end of the process, not much changed, but at least I had someone to complain to as the letters were never signed by anyone.

I think Global Claims excel themselves in avoidance techniques. The fact that the claims team are in South Africa and they only ever see paperwork that someone scans in over here doesn't help. Attachments to my receipts were separated before they reached the claim team. They are hopelessly incompetent.

“Use at your peril”

We have had an annual policy with Columbus for a number of years now and fortunately have never had to claim. We were due to travel on holiday with my mum (who was insured herself with LV). Unfortunately she suffered a stroke 8 days before travelling. LV Paid my mums claim within 2 weeks without any problem.
