As the title says, Switchmedia lure in new customers with cheap £6 fees for one year, then whack you with a £100+ bill. It's not even due for another 2 months yet I have already had 2 (TWO!) reminder emails. I rang the customer support line to ask where this huge bill had come from and they very rudely said 'You should have read the terms and conditions'. I'm sorry, but if you are forcing someone into a 3 year contract with such an unreasonable bill (bear in mind wordpress is $8 a year,... (read more)

After falling prey to the same 'two year contract hidden in the small print' nonsense as everyone else, I'm now having problems cancelling my contract with Switchmedia. I wrote to them in February instructing them to terminate my contract with them and close the account and website (as I am no longer trading.) Heard nothing back, so emailed. Still nothing. Emailed again. Today I get an email saying I need to fill in cancellation forms - despite the fact I've already made a written request to... (read more)

I have been with Switchmedia for a number of years. In the early days they were fine but since being taken over their customer service, reliability of service and general attitude is awful. Their first level 'technical' support is very poor. They kept fobbing me off asking what type of accont I had, my pop accounts etc etc but THEY ARE THE ONES HOSTING IT!!! They reduced my email to 5MB (strangely enough just a day after I pointed out their incompetence) and couldn;t receive emails. After 24... (read more)

Hi,
I spoke to your Renewals department yesterday and your agent verbally abused me and openly insulted me - basically stating that I was too stupid to read a letter (btw I have a Masters degree) and you were going to send a Debt Management company to my house - threats!! Surely this is no way to treat or speak to a customer no matter what the nature of the query. I firmly believe that the second year costs should be highlighted in the contract when you actually take it out not on an advertising letter - that way it is clear what one is signing and making a commitment. The T&Cs do not mention the costs - they are generic. Surely a 2000% increase in year 2 would set alarm bells ringing and make one take notice. Again as I say I would NOT recommend Switch Media to anyone simply based on on terrible customer experience and I would be very surprised if Switch Media condone your agent's behaviour. Also apologies are cheap if they are not genuine.

I called Switchmedia Customer services, was held in a queue for 9 minutes and eventually gave up. I have spent about an hour now with this issue, most of it on my mobile phone, and it is not economical for me to continue discussing. I have previously asked if Switchmedia can call me and was told "we are too busy to do outbound calls to customers". It is clear to me that I am not important to Switchmedia and that once Switchmedia have my contract they do not value customers - sort of backs up my and others comments.

I have phoned the Consumer Citizens Advice and they have advised me to send Switch Media a letter - recorded delivery - stating that I will not pay as per the Supply of Services and Goods Act 1982, as I feel that they are in breach of contract. They also advised that they will pass the information regarding SwitchMedia to The Office of Fair Trading, along with the complaint. I... (read more)

Had a leaflet posted to my address with an enticing offer of £5 a month. Professional looking letter that shows you a preview of your potential website. Signed up online, however, no terms and conditions were presented before finalising which I found very odd and should have got alarm bells ringing from there on. The next day I get a call from a member of the team who tell me they can "upgrade" my website but at a cost of over £500! I promptly refused their offer. Not being made aware of... (read more)

It just says and thereafter annually.............which is if you choose to ............not because you are bullied to!!!!!

I 100% agree with you as it mirrors my own experience and can appreciate your frustration. I had to call them up 3 times before I spoke to an advisor who wasn't dismissive of my issue or laughed at the thought of me transferring a domain name away from them. All very time consuming when I had a relately simple request.
This whole locking you out of your own domain surely can't be allowed. I don't know any other company that do this - and I've dealt with lots of hosting companies over the years.
I also can;t help but comment on the fact that in the below Switchmedia response they again mention the term "DNS management". If you don;t allow me to change my nameservers or change the registrar key I can't manage DNS. It's plain wrong that you say you have DNS management. GRanted, you have partial DNS management, but not DNS management that every other hosting company on the planet offers (E.g. full control, of your own domain name).

@switchmedia response:
Thanks for the reply. I really aren't a fan of writing reviews about companies who have wasted so much of my time, but in this instance I feel my experience should be shared. Anyone only has to Google the term “Switchmedia Reviews” to find hundreds people complaining about exactly the same issue time after time. You have 3 very in depth reviews about the same issue alone this month on this very site!
"unsatisfactory" is an understatement based on the experience I had with yourselves. Once a customer has signed up I'm sure you contracts are totally water tight - I have no doubt of that fact. It's great you have thousands of happy customers, but that's no use to myself or anyone else here who has had a frankly terrible and time consuming experience with your company.
There is lots written about yourselves on the internet and on this very site and they literally ALL cite the same issue. I was shocked when I read them all before I spoke to you and put them down to a lot of people trying to damage your reputation. However, after dealing with yourselves they are all spot on unfortunately, as they ALL describe the same issue I had with your company.
As you're essentially cold calling people based on the free companies house data feed AND using, what I (and lots of people who review you) think, is very deceptive language in your letters a lot of none technical people get confused - they assume, like I did for a brief period, that you have some sort of arrangement with companies house in an official capacity - which you don't. Interestingly, when I asked one your advisors exactly they got my company data in the first place he said they have an agreement with companies house – which after a little reading on the subject, find quite hard to believe.
I'm looking at a scan of the letter you sent re a domain name and to congratulate me on my incorporation date and then to confirm what my company registration number is wrong – when I read that letter for the time I immediately assumed the company has an agreement with companies house. The language used there is wrong in my opinion. By using such language you're attempting to build some sort of trust or authority to unknowing customers.
I'm sure that once an unknowing person has gone ahead and replied to your official looking letter that they are tied into your 2 year contract, but that isn't the issue here. It's how you got that person to sign up in the first place.
There are other issues I've not mentioned too, like the fact that you say your offer full DNS control yet you don’t allow customers to change nameservers or change the registrar tag - thereby locking me out of my own domain. However, that isn't the issue here, it's your sales tactics to generate new customers.
I personally think your sales letters need totally reworking to remove all the mention of companies house, company incorporation dates and company numbers. Granted, this is freely available information, but the way you’ve used it is quite questionable in my opinion.

Sorry to read you feel the offer is disingenuous in any way.
Switchmedia appreciate our customers valuable feedback as we are always looking for ways to improve the customer experience. Yes, I am aware NOW that it is a two year contract but my problem (and it sounds like I'm not the only one) is that it wasn't made CLEAR at all at the time that it was a two year contract.
And it may well be buried in the T+C somewhere but nowhere is it mentioned on the introductory letter or the welcome letter, which I am looking at right now.
As I mentioned in my earlier response, if you had been up front about everything, it is quite possible, probable even, that I would have spent much more money with your company at a later stage. Plus, and this is how you grow a good company, I would have told all my friends and family about what a great company you had been.
As it is now, I will do my utmost to spread the word about what a dishonest and deceitful company you are.

After the initial free period the price returns to the normal rate inline with the current price structure listed on www.switchmedia.com
Our cancellation policy is that we require 60 days notice. This is to ensure the services are not renewed and cancelled in plenty of time.
Switchmedia set out the way we work and the terms and conditions in our original agreement which must be accepted before an account can be opened or services used and our support team remain available Mon-Fri 9.00-5.30pm to answer any questions, concerns or queries you may have.
Kind regards,
Switchmeda Web Support Team

I experienced the same thing - only the £118 was taken from my account without prior notice or authorisation (to my horror, they used the stored details of the card I'd used to pay the £6 with last year) a full 30 days before the invoice was even due! I have 2 kids and am on a tight budget so I was devastated to unexpectedly find myself so seriously out of pocket. However, according to their own (legally iffy) terms and conditions, they authorise themselves to take money using stored details of credit/debit cards within 14 days of the invoice due date, instead of 30 days, as I experienced, so I've asked my bank to do a charge-back, particularly as it's for a service I neither want or asked for. I too will be contacting the ombudsman and various consumer watchdogs as it seems to me that SwitchMedia are treading a fine line. Just because something's in the small print, doesn't necessarily mean it's legal. As for their line (below) that 'we understand it can be difficult for new companies in their first year' - yes, it obviously is, with unpleasant, greedy sharks like SwitchMedia circling, waiting to take advantage of those who are new to business and a little bit naive!

We have had nothing bust problems with Switch media. They are not fixing technical issues. They have billed us twice for hosting and taken months to repay. They have tried invoicing yearly for items that were paid for every two years. They do not communicate between departments. Bottom line - use someone else, do not waste your time or money! We have had the same problem! We cancelled our hosting only to be told that we did not so they charged us which we refused to pay! now they are claiming there is a cancelling procedure which they did not tell us on the phone

They didn't really do anything and are not easy to contact. I think they just make their money from sneakily signing you up for 2 years when you think you are signing up for 1 and then telling you that your verbal cancellation was invalid and as you didn't cancel in writing 30 days before, they try charge you for another year. I'm not paying. They say they are taking legal action. I'll keep you posted! (read more)

I have had the exact same problem with them. I too am not paying. I propose that we make this board a home of update on legal actions with Switch Media.
They have said they are sending a letter to me (2 weeks ago) which I have yet to receive, my guess is that they are attempting to run down the clock on my due date so that they can charge me interest.
They will not get a penny from me. FYI for everyone out there, unless a company makes you scroll through their terms and conditions before agreeing to them they are as legally binding as a hand shake, you are not commited unless you are forced to agree to it which we did not in this case.

shocked. nobody told me i was in a contract. you start a domain for 5 pounds and then they send you an invoice after 11 months for the nexy year. contacted customer service. apparantly it is in small print.looked at it .it doesnt say it is obligatory or contract. told them to cancel. but they have threatened me with debt collectors. this is daylight robbery. we should report such companies to watchdog. there is no written contract.people very smartly tell you it is 5 pound to set a... I am sorry to read that your experience of Switchmedia has been unsatisfactory.
Please be aware that the hosting term is for two years as we do provide hosting FREE for the first year and a domain at a reduced cost. Prices return to the normal rate after the first year inline with the price structure on www.switchmedia.co.uk
Our terms and conditions are referred to in the offer letter and any correspondence sent from Switchmedia in which it states the hosting term is for two years.
Due to the nature of the start-up offer we are unable to cancel the account after the first year as we require the 2nd year renewal to fulfill the contractual obligation of the agreement.

Dave is absolutly right. Do not use this company. They take money from your bank and not value for money. They get new companies address from company house and rob them. (read more)

I signed with these people just over a year ago, they then proceeded to milk my bank account taking money that wan't agreed and when i complained, referred me to T&C's in the small print. I then found out that they automatically renewed me without permission even though i had written to them to cancel. Despite several calls all of which went to the same person who was obnoxious and unbeleivingly rude they denied recieving the letter and the overall experience cost me several hundred... (read more)

Be careful, effectively I have ceased trading and tried to cancel my web page (obviously no need for it now), well within the permitted 30 days.
I sent it to support@switchmedia.co.uk which apprently no longer works but I have had no bounce back. They said I am in now in breach of contract and will send round the baliffs if I don't pay up. So they want me to renew and then cancel for a web site that I no longer need, and for a service that I don't need even before the renewal date.
Seems a bit heavy handed given I have been with them for 3 years. This does not send out the right message when many other sites offer guaranteed money back. Take my advise look at other sites first.

yes I will spend a lot of time putting together the evidence next week. I may not succeed but Will do my utmost. I am very happy to be able to report just how bad the service is and how victimised I feel when someone takes your money without so much as a response or reason

I am sending on all details to credit card company and euro consumer agency will keep you posted .
Luckily I held onto intial offer in post and there is no mention of 2 year deal

Just done the same!
The initial offer and order confirmation make no reference to the two year period. The two year term is buried on page 5 out of 11 in the T&C referred to via the web site.

I think that the consumer credit act may apply as Switch Media told me that they reclaimed the loss on the low cost in year 1 by the year 2 charges - effectively a form of credit.
You can get protection under the Consumer Credit Act
If you operate as a sole trader - within a partnership or as an unincorporated association - you are also protected by the Consumer Credit Act, under which you count as an 'individual'. The Act extends consumer credit regulation to business lending where the amount of the credit or hire agreement is £25,000 or less.
The Act does not apply to limited companies, limited liability partnerships or individuals of 'high net worth' (as long as this is agreed in writing beforehand).
Hope this helps...
