“why oh why”

Written on: 14/05/2013

the gym facilities are great though feel the cardio has been crushed together and weights seem to have been allowed to spread out I am a disabled man so cardio is what I need to do to strengthen my limbs. The reason my rating is so low is that I reported the showers been faulty in feb this year 2013 and a notice was put up in may saying they are aware of the problems with the showers and are waiting for them to be repaired. Today I inquired when they where going to be done as cold showers... (read more)

“Disgusting customer service”

Written on: 09/05/2013

We were mis-sold our membership by a member of staff. The head office thinks its fine for staff to lie about the terms of the contract verbally. I would like to reiterate what another reviewer has said and make sure you read ALL the terms & conditions before you sign. This disgusting company will refuse to cancel your membership at all costs. The staff are obnoxious, patronising and rude. The facilites at the Nottingham gym are well below par. Broken showers, over-cholrinated pool, and... (read more)

Written on: 18/04/2013

I was made redundant and had to cancel my membership early in the month. I gave them written notice and offered to pay to the same date in the following month to give them 1-month notice. They ignored me for over 3-months, but are now writing threatening letters to me and adding fake administration charges because they want me to pay them for nearly 8-weeks (i.e. the end of the following month) after I've stopped using the gym. Title says it all: Really poor gym - equiptment broken - staff blame headoffice Every week something else is broken. When things are broken they stay broken for weeks or months on end. The staff always blame head office. I dont care whos fault it is - i'm paying for a gym. I've been to many gyms but have never seen anything like this. “FAULTY EQUIPMENT @ WARRINGTON”

Written on: 10/04/2013

Every trip to the gym sees another piece of broken equipment. Jacquzi out of order for over two months as waiting for a part from China. Showers have been out of order for a week now as pump broken - again waiting on a part. Swimming pool freezing - temp states 85 degrees, more like 58 degrees. Lockers broken, hairdryers broken, rude staff, staff bitching about customers/colleagues. After two years as a member I am changing to another gym nearby. I currently pay £26 for an off... “Cold pool 2 months on!”

Written on: 08/04/2013 by LasVegas99

I am really disappointed with the DW in St Helens. I joined this gym at the beginning of March. Since then the pool has been freezing cold, all that the gym advertises at the front desk is a laminate stating that the pool is a couple of degrees cooler????. The only feedback you get when you complain is 'The problem is with Head Office' we need a part'. Considering that there are a number of local gyms and pools in the area this will lose a lot of customers! The finacial benefit / cost to... (read more)

Written on: 26/03/2013

Hey. I commented a bit further down on 8/2/13 about problems trying to cancel.

I'm right in thinking a judge has to appoint debt collectors (correct me if wrong)

Have a read of some of these people who've been pestered by ARC (their debt collectors)- many people on there agree they use scare tactics to get people to pay and legally can't actually do much.

Here is a relevant bit of cut and paste info -

"Penalty Charges and Debt Collection Agents
Whatever happens if it gets to a debt collection agency, write to them and tell them that any fees they try to apply are not legally enforceable. The only costs they would be able to add to the ‘debt’ are county court fees – they cannot add legal fees in the small claims court.

Enforceability
As good a game as these people talk it is very rare for these cases to actually end up in court. They’ll do their damndest to scare you and cause you so much stress that you give in and pay up. If more of these get to court the gyms are all too well aware that the obvious flaws in their contracts will make case law and they’ll not even be able to try and scare ex-members with their bullying tactics"

“DW sports fitness Newport is disgusting!”

I joined DW sports in Newport South Wales around 2 years ago, and I have to say I was really happy with it. But in the last year things have gone rapidly downhill. I've had the same sort of issue, although disputing this with DW....

The contract says you must provide "one full calendar month notice".

However, I understand that the legal definition of a calendar month is as “a period from a specified day in one month to the day numerically corresponding to that day in the following month, less one e.g. 7th January to 6th February”. I can't see anywhere in the contract that says it must be to the end of the following month. I don't believe that the word "full" would be interpreted as being anything other than a whole calendar month (i.e. the same definition as "a calendar month") and simply clarifies it is not part of a calendar month.

However, they are threatening to take me to court so let's see what the District Judge has to say...

Been a member since it first opened and the change in the last 12 months has been significant, going down hill quickly, I am in there for on average 2.5hrs 3 x Week.. Staff walk the floor only to sign the form by the lift wall, I have on many ocassion had to move gym equipment back into a useable position, even some of the newer members are disrepectful to equipment, not wiping it down after use, dropping the free weights from such heights as to make such a noise, it vibrates across the whole floor.
but will praise the cleaning staff, as the changing rooms are always clean and tidy, other than DW the choice is limited, but it looks like this gym is going the way of all the others that have shut down, Fitness FIRST- Premier fitness- la health - all gone due to indifference in the way they were run.. and staff whom think they are here for their benefit and not the paying customers

Not only did they make me pay despite seeing on the system I had not been to DW once during the 10 months but they made me pay an extra month's notice for cancelling. Gyms are notorious for being like this but did not expect it from DW after being a member for 4 years. (read more)

Dw fitness is a joke became a member but after 4 months had to cancel due to not only becoming pregnant but having a high risk pregnancy! Sent cancellation letter and thought that's it, now I'm being harassed by ARC who state the only way I can cancel is if I'm terminally ill and dying!!!! I am currently under a consultant as I have a bleed near my placenta and have been told to do basically nothing or I could loose my baby, I informed ARC this to there reply was SO, pregnancy is not a... I'm sorry to hear that you are having problems that are putting you under stress. Sadly this is allowed....when you signed up with DW you will have signed a gym contract that will have had terms and conditions covering all aspects of the membership, including valid reasons for exiting your contract early. For most gym companies pregnancy isn't a valid reason for exiting your contract, as in theory you could freeze it and begin exercising again when you've had your baby. Some gym companies have a clause whereby if you can provide a doctors note to state you are unfit to exercise they will freeze for free, or even allow you to cancel early - but DW sadly are not one of these companies.

Sadly gym companies can't take any excuse for exiting a contract early at face value, as the majority of people will simply be spinning a yarn because they just don't want to go anymore!

The long and the short of it is that you told DW they could expect you to be a member for a certain time, and unfortunately they're going to try and recover that through debt collection. The plus side is that you may be able to come to arrangement with the debt collection company whereby you pay it by small installments each month.

Good luck, and I hope all goes well with your baby!

“Potentially an excellent gym”

Written on: 06/08/2012 by baaddad

Demands for extra non membership payments seem to be very common in these reviews as is the case for my 6 month membership at Gainsborough-paid for in advance. I joined that gym when I was working away from home, I got a shock when I received a demand for another 6 months subscription (or they would pass my details to a debt collection agency) when I got back home. Firstly, the gym is mostly excellent: well equipped and with friendly, knowledgeable staff. It's just a pity that it was ruined... (read more)

“They tried to sue me for money I'd all ready paid!”

Written on: 05/08/2012 by gaffnp (2 reviews written)

You should absolutely avoid this gym at all costs. I was a loyal member in Southport for several months until myself and the people I live with decided to pitch in to buy a treadmill together, because none of us much liked having to travel to the gym. I gave one month's written notice, paid my fee and that was that - or so I thought! A few months down the line I get a letter advising me I still owe the £20 severance payment. "Fair enough", I thought, "someone's made a clerical error" - so... (read more)

“Unreasonable and Unfair”

Written on: 30/07/2012

milton keynes had one of the best body pump instructors for a couple of years. his name is Huw and he was asked to leave just a couple of weeks ago due to the fact that he was asking for too much cover. there was a reason for this. he had been in a car accident. 40 members signed a petition to ask for him to be re instated. Is it too much to ask for the management to re consider their actions and ask him back? (read more)

“Air condition turned off in Leigh - good-bye from me”

Written on: 25/07/2012

After being a loyal member of DW Fitness in Leigh for several years they have now decided to turn off the air conditioning and have replaced it with a few little fans. The entire gym is like a sauna. I will be leaving and joining a reputable gym which doesn't try saving money wherever they can. Please do not join this gym, you will regret it. Gaz from Leigh. (read more)

I have been a member for years and will be leaving now because of this. Completely ridiculous. Another way of cutting costs by Dave Wheelen. I hope everyone leaves because of it.
