“Gym review”

★★★☆☆

written by Martin465 on 20/10/2018

I have been a member for about 2 years. Generally it is very good. The facilities are excellent, opening hours flexible and staff very attentive and helpful. However, there are been numerous times when things are not working. The jacuzzi and the steam room and also the air conditioning in the changing rooms. It is like a sauna in the changing rooms without the temperature regulator. Also, for such a prestige club the food is terrible. I heard the young girl serving food saying " no, it is easy, everything just gets microwaved from frozen". I would like to see fresh food served, and more staff to serve food as quite often there is no one on the counter. The gym, however, is excellent. A great choice of hi Tec equipment, superb.

“Unprofessional therapist which ruined the day”

★★★☆☆

written by GracelynBrady123 on 27/07/2015

spa facilities were ok, the warm stone beds especially relaxing, however one was broken. My sister and I had an hours massage which should have been the highlight of the day. However the therapist was continually sniffing through out the treatment. I understand that we all get colds but she could have blown her nose! On top of this she then yawned on at least two occasions. I was trying to relax during the massage and the sniffing was bad enough but the yawning was appalling. The swimming pool was ok but the jacuzzi was far too hot. I actually prefer the water hot but this was uncomfortable. On the positive side my sister and I did manage to relax but I would not recommend this venue and certainly not recommend the therapist.

“Nice dedicated staff but new rules are intrusive”

★★★☆☆

written by 178Rodriguez on 08/06/2015

The staff are friendly and motivating for the most part and do try their best. However there seems to be a new directive from head office that means you can no longer drop in and do any exercise class you fancy - you have to sign up via the internet, log in and book to do a class a few days in advance and cancel at least one day before..... how the hell can you do this? People need to be able to come whenever they can, because shifts can change at work, trains are cancelled and delayed, you can have problems at home or cant get a sitter ... anything can alter your life yet someone at Head Office obviously wants to save a few quid by cutting down on under attended classes so they have put into place this new regime. I don't want anyone knowing where I am going to be two or three days in advance, let alone some penny pinching nosey parker trying to impress the board members at the next AGM. Get your priorities right Bannatynes, without your subscription paying members you will all be out of a job.

“No One Cares Only Your Money”

★★★☆☆

written by RylandCleveland on 28/06/2014

After many years at this club they did not take my direct debit from the bank then blame us and the bank by stopping our entry saying it was the banks fault, later we found it was their fault as their computer did not take ours and others money that month. then they said that we had to pay the full monies for that month to re join when it was half way through that month, we left, then they sent us a bill for two months having cancell pur membership, and yes this is not a clean gym.

“Gradually went downhill”

★★★☆☆

written by on 10/09/2013

I was a member of a Bannatyne's Gym for five years. During that time I saw a deterioration in the service to its customers. At first there were plenty of trainers to advise but then personal training came in and that seemed to put an end to the number of trainers in the gym. I made sure that when I handed in my letter of cancellation that I had an acknowledgement at the same time. I was not impressed by receiving a phone call from Bannatynes two days before my membership ceased asking if I would like to reconsider. It seems to me that the membership must be declining for this to happen! If I were to join a gym again I would go to one where only a month's notice is required.

“That's not a spa day”

★★★☆☆

written by on 09/04/2013

I joined three friends for a spa day deal at Bannatynes in Mansfield. The deal cost us £37.50 each including a 40 minute treatment. Upon arrival we went through the paperwork which was fine, the reception team were neither overly friendly or particularly rude. But then we were asked if we wanted to 'hire' robes and slippers for another £3. Erm, it's a spa day, one would have thought they would be included. Alas no. Further investigation revealed that towels weren't included either. Sorry but if you're booking in to a Spa Day package you think all those things are included without further cost. To either not provide them or charge further to hire those items is just cheap. On the plus side the pool and sauna facilties were nice and the treatment was good, upgrades to better products at a further cost though. I wouldn't recommend this as it really didn't feel like a spa day, more an afternoon spent in a pool area with a facial after it. Only giving it three stars because the ladies in the spa area were so nice. Otherwise it would be two.

“Could have been better”

★★★☆☆

written by on 28/07/2012

We enjoyed our time at Bannatynes today. But we felt that there wasn't enough facilities there for people on a spa day. At the steam room, sauna and jacuzzi you could only fit a few people in and we were finding we had to queue to use these facilities. The relaxation room was full, and as we could not lounge round in our swimwear we had to get dressed constantly. As there were no robes available all day either. The swimming pool was restricted due to children's swimming lessons and groups of teenagers messing around. The treatments we very relaxing and highly recommended. However as the facilities were so crowded we ended up spending over an hour and a half in the cafe awaiting our treatments. Bannatynes could do with expanding the Spa facilities to offer more than just a few hours of relaxation. We decided not to use the gym as this was purely a relaxation day.

“Good but could be much better”

★★★☆☆

written by Pencilpoppy40 on 21/03/2012

I recently rejoined Bannatynes in Banbury. Manager who initially saw me was very efficient and friendly but almost too quick to get rid of me. Essentially the customer is not left feeling special. Went to changing rooms and overheard two women saying how dirty the place had become. Used the gym - great. Swimming pool and jacuzzi - great. Went for a bite to eat - not so good. Watched from the eating area with interest. Customers left at 'bar' area with no one serving. Phone rings for ages. Dirty plates around my table not promptly picked up. Bits of detritus on the floor. Needs a really good Hoover - everywhere! Needs more customer focus. Nearly there - people are nice but needing direction from great managers.

“Good facitilities, hard to cancel membership”

★★★☆☆

written by on 13/03/2012

I was a member of the bannatynes gym at Wakefield for 3 years, very clean and all equipment was well maintain and very friendly staff. The ony problem i had with bannatynes was when it come to canceling my contract, you have to give 3 months notice, which i did in writting but they then claimed that i had not given any notice at all and was trying to get me to pay a further 3 months of fee's. i sent email's and letters to the gym explaning that i had given them notice so i was not going to pay, and got no reply from them at all . 3 months later i recived an invoice demanding i pay the 3 months in full imediatly. conclusion, be very carfull when canceling the contract

Interesting. I have a Bannatynes down the road and expressed interest in joining a few years ago. I was very put off by the fact that they can't (or won't!) give you a simple breakdown of monthly/annual fees. I was told I would have to book a tour first but, if it was out of my price range why would I want to see it? And of course when I finally got some information it is indeed an expensive option. I decided not to join as I couldn't tie myself into the minimum contract and I was very wary of their attitude. I don't like companies which don't make their pricing clear from the start. I have since been rung three or four times to see whether I am interested in joining. Ultimately it is not the price that has put me off. It is this sort of obscure policy. I sense there would be trouble if you didn't read the small print with a microscope and therefore will keep away from it.

“Started well but has gone downhill”

★★★☆☆

written by Junk10 on 06/02/2012

Was initially happy with my membership but as time has gone on, it seems that the investment at my local bannatynes has been restricted. The club just isn't as well maintained as it used to be. Equipment out of order, broken showers, not as clean. I had a nightmare trying to cancel my membership. This came about due to a change in circumstances. I put my notice in to cancel but this was 'lost' My own fault for not reading the small print but it eventually took me 4 and a half months to get out of my contract.

“As with the others below I agree good facilities but...”

★★★☆☆

written by on 06/04/2011

As with the others below I agree good facilities but who on earth plans far enough ahead to give 3 months notice before they wish to leave - I understand a minimum memebership of 3 months but I find a 3 month termination notice absolutely unjustifiable - they clearly don't want you back once they lose you!

“Ive been a member of bannatynes in Leicester for 4...”

★★★☆☆

written by howmuchisit on 09/11/2010

Ive been a member of bannatynes in Leicester for 4 years. Its great for a gym and only ok for classes but poor for relaxation. Its impossible to relax in the pool or spas in the daytime because there are the regulars (about eight very overweight men) that just sit in the pool, spa or steam room every day, mostly watching women, for hours on end. Nice for them but not for new members. If those men are not there its because one or both the spas are not working, which is quite often. I think the off peak price is still £32 without weekends and about £36 off peak including weekends -although you may have to haggle for this best price and its £5 more if you want them to supply the towels. The price is probably better than other gyms that have a pool but if they ever put the price up on my membership id have to leave because most of the classes are boring aerobic type of things and i dont think the overall standard is worth any more money. My friends say they are sticking with it simply because the price is ok and you pay for what you get and as long as they keep the price down they will keep the members as they have to remember that alot of the customers pop over from de montfort university or are retired pensioners that dont have lots of money. If you visit any other gyms in Leicester please put the prices in your review- the salespeople in all the gyms seem reluctant to give prices over the phone.

“I am a member at Banbury, the most annoying part of...”

★★★☆☆

written by vikkitoria on 29/04/2008

I am a member at Banbury, the most annoying part of the whole Bannatyne experience for me is there does seem to be a number of chavy youths who just come along to chat on the weights (v annoying when you are waiting to get on them). The First Fitness equipment is great (when it isn't broken down that is). The personal trainers make the place, they really know their stuff and will put you through your paces to achieve your goals. It doesn't feel pretentious; as there is a great mix of different ages going.
