As a first time mum to be, I was delighted to learn that a new series called Bringing Up Baby was starting on Channel 4, there's just so much conflicting information out there on how to do it, it was great to see some methods put to the test.
The series, which concluded on the 16th October, was a four part documentary that followed six couples and their new babies testing out three very different methods of bringing them up. These were each methods that were pioneered in the 50's, 60's and 70's and considered to be groundbreaking at the time. For the purposes of the show, each one was tested by two couples who were assigned a mentor who fully supported each of the three concepts.
Some pretty interesting stuff here, there were inevitable clashes between the mentors themselves when they were put in a room together, and it was interesting to see how the couples coped with these three extremes. I was particulary astounded by Claire Verity, childcare expert and champion of the 50's routine, routine, routine concept of fitting the baby around you. This involved feeding on a strict regime, ignoring them when they cry and leaving them outside for hours on end! The woman was scary to say the least.
I didn't come to any real conclusion at the end, other than do what's best for you and your baby... so will have to play it by ear I guess. All in all however, this was a good series and well worth checking out if you're about to have a baby. You can download it at the channel 4 website.
