This company works at a snail's pace in relation to other companies. I have another account with Bluehost which is far, far faster. For example, I just had to reset my 1and1 password. Got the reset email, reset the password, and the it did not work. Had to wait 10 minutes before it would work. Ive used 1and1 for years. Ive has my run-ins with them but recently tried their MailXchange offering. When it didnt work I got no help from technical support. Because I couldnt get it working I then tried to move mail servers to someone else - I ran into issues doing this and once again got no help. Eventually I had a Microsoft tech use my machine to change the 1and1 site. I even got a 1and1 tech telling me that 1and1 is not Microsoft compatible - I need know no more. I was happy with 1and1's cheap and cheerful domain hosting for a year or so until a couple of weeks ago they charged me for 'MyWebsite', which I thought was a 'free trial' and therefore - free! Apparently, I should have cancelled within the 30 days. I thought this was extremely sharp practice and most probably illegal, but I was wrong. I signed up for the business plan and was very happy when I got it. I found it very fast and simple to use. Only downside to 1&1 I had was that it costs quite a lot and for the features I wanted, I needed to pay a lot extra. I decided to cancel once by contacting them. They then told me to visit contract.1and1.com where I cancelled. After 1 month, I was charged around £24 (It was somewhere round that, I forgot now) for my websites SSL! I have not had any trouble with their website hosting to date - I have three small non-commercial sites with them. Their telephone support has been ok on the couple of times I've needed it. However, during the last couple of months accessing their webmail has become a horrendous experience. Servers refuse to allow you to connnect and log-in frequently just hangs. When it's working 1and1 service is actually good. God forbid you have a problem though!!!
I've been battling for 2 months with the fact some of the websites they host for me cannot be seen by the big ISP's like Virginmedia etc. Try their technical support and your going nowhere fast. In fact frankly it's woeful technically. I did eventually get through to one guy who did actually know what he was doing and reset their firewall allowing VirginMedia traffic through. I have 4 websites hosted by 1&1 uk.
Outages are very rare but their interface and user friendliness is diabolical.
Ironically, they advertise in many magazines encouraging the public to host websites with them.
However, unless you have a pretty wide knowledge of webhosting then it all gets very complicated. They use accronyms that only they understand, their FAQs are really difficult to find and follow.

Have been using 1&1 since 2005, I had several problems at the beginning because I was learning by myself.
Now I am quite good with websites and hosting and I can give you a very good advice to deal with 1&1:
Never Never call them, it is a waste of time and money, it seems they have a bunch of student located overseas who are pay $0.5/hour

I was originally satisfied with 1and1, until I registered a second domain with them. They decided my previously acceptable user account, which was active for months, needed to be "verified" to prevent internet fraud.

I do not recommend this company. At first they seemed OK. It was cheap to register domain names. I had a few domains which I didn't want to renew, I searched all the help sections and couldn't find the info and eventually contacted 1and1. They sent me the link to another website altogether. Why don't they put this information on their main website?

I've had a 1and1 hosted website for more than 5 years, but I still don't fully understand all that 1and1 appear to offer!
(A '1and1' for dummies would help :) )
