“There has got to be a better one somewhere”

Written on: 04/02/2012 by HansZinderfaan (2 reviews written)

Owned this for three years. After 18 months the battery died. I asked Tom Tom for cost of getting a new battery they replied \"charge it for two hours\" *%#}#%*! I toook it apart and fitted a new one myself. Their support is awful. They don't read the questions. It frequently locks up. Only the reset button will bring it back to life. When it goes properly I like the Bluetooth facility it works well with the iPhone. The maps are well out of date and the cost of the updating service is... (read more)

Well I'm not sure about the other reviews on this site but I have not had any trouble whatsoever with my GO720. I have used it all over Australia including rural areas and on dirt roads and it has rarely been caught out. In addition to this I have just been in Europe for 6 weeks where I used it in Ireland, Germany and Italy and it didn't miss a beat. Not once did it fail to get me where I wanted to go. Not even in the midst of Florence and it's myriad of tiny and confusing streets did it get... (read more)

I've had my GO 720 for 2 years. had trouble with the map accuracy right from the beginning. support recommended i buy another map. that's when i started having problems with the memory card and map updates. the device freezes at least once a week. This problem resolved upon a quick reboot from the laptop. since installing windows 7 on the laptop however, tom tom home application no longer runs and i can't unfreeze the device. the support and website from Tom Tom is terrible. wish i had... Written on: 19/10/2010

Have had this now for about 2 years. Soon after getting it, the unit started to re-start after shut down. Battery was then drained before I came to use it and soon stopped holding it's charge. Should have sent it back to TomTom, but decided that considering their poor customer service rep was just not worth it.
Also found that when I got fed up with the advance turn directions, they would not turn off, regardless of the unit's setting, so I turned off the speaker instead.
Was not impressed... (read more)

Written on: 18/03/2010

I've had, or should that be I had, the TomTom 720 for about 18months. It wasn't heavily used, just a few times a month. The first thing i noticed was that it would take ages to get a satellite fix. Sometimes over 5 minutes. I'd restart it and when i got home, sync to tomtom home for any updates.
Then the battery life dropped off. For the last 6 months I had to keep it connected to the incar charger. This then caused the usb connecter on the tomtom to get loose and the charger cable had to be... (read more)

Written on: 15/02/2010

TomTom 720 - I agree with many of the other reviewers. This is a good device let down by TomTom themselves and poor design features. What I like: directions are accurate - for the most part, screen is a reasonable size, speed camera works well. What I dislike: map share doesn't work, confusing menus - especially on the move, stupidly small icon for speed camera warning - I don't need my glasses to drive but I can't see the speed on the icon without them. The unit refuses to work when taken... (read more)

Written on: 28/03/2009

I found my Tom Tom Go 720 locks up, wont reboot, shuts down when it feels like it and blue tooth drops out and won't reconnect. Have sent it back to Tomtom. They wrote back saying no fault found - Every time I use it I'm not sure quite what it's going to do next. Also worth knowing tomtom are very unhelpful and Curry's Electrical aren't prepared to swap the unit, refund or allow me to pay the extra to upgrade, even after the second return. (read more)

Written on: 10/03/2009 by glenc (288 reviews written)

The Tom Tom Go 720 has a good screen, reasonably easy to use, instructions are quite clear and map accuracy is pretty good. Pretty good overall, as mentioned, the sucker is the main issue but overall Id recommend it - its just a shame that something as simple as how it sticks to the windscreen lets it down. The sucker ALWAYS falls off the windscreen which is very, very annoying, particularly if you're driving down the motorway and it comes off the screen and falls onto the floor - not the... Written on: 24/10/2008

Probably one of the better sat navs out there. The map isn't good for newly built up areas but that is an issue with tele atlas rather than tomtom itself.
Mapshare is more of a gimmick rather than an useful function. Can only report missing roads. Can not update the maps manually to show the missing roads. Hopefully mapshare will prove to be more useful in the future.. but dont hold your breathe. (read more)

Written on: 30/07/2008 by Glen S (1 review written)

The TomTom Go 720 is my first GPS unit, and I really like it. The bad points are that much of the Alberta map is inaccurate, especially in rural area's, where it would be especially nice to find an address. Some area's don't even show up, like the rural sub-division I live in. The cities seem ok for accuracy, but even the main highway between Edmonton-Calgary is off a great deal of the time. In smaller towns you are often a whole block off as far as street locations go. I recently travelled... (read more)

I totally agree with this gentleman, after sales although polite does not resolve any repair issues. The TomTom software is probably what caused all the trouble with me, and to cap it all it corrupted my backup as well. Now they tell me I will have to pay for a new map. On something that is 2 months old is a bit of a joke. Thinking of getting a garmin or summat else instead. (read more)

My Tom Tom sat nav couldn't find my postcode, nearest it would locate was six houses down the road. Had to use "current GPS" as home address. When recording own voice there is no volume control so can only increase volume by shouting! I asked Tom-Tom if it still warned of speed cameras if only tracking your position, they said no, well it does! First impressions favourable. (read more)

Written on: 02/05/2008 by wjans (1 review written)

If you live in Alberta, Canada or plan to navigate through this region you will be disappointed with the Tom Tom Go 720. After much frustrating communication with Tom Tom support they finally told me that they have known accuracy problems in Alberta. This was only after I had sent my unit in for repairs which did not solve the issue. The unit often locates you on the wrong street and as a result gives the wrong navigation. An inaccurate GPS is a useless GPS. (read more)

Written on: 27/04/2008 by SilverXray1 (2 reviews written)

Overall the Tom Tom Go 720 is a disappointing product exacerbated by wrong information given by TomTom. The saleman demonstrated that I could receive sms messages on the 720 and that these would translated into speech. What he didnt know was that the SonyErricson he was demonstrating with was the only mobile that would do this. The TomTom website gave my Nokia 6280 as compatable but it wasn't. The shop was very sympathetic and gave me a total refund. I found that the unit constantly gave me... (read more)

The Tom Tom website lists cell phones that are compatible converting text to speech for incoming sms messages. This list included Nokia 6280 but I can't get mine to work. The only cell phone that I did get to work was a Sony Erricson. Halford's were very fair and gave me a total refund. After trying various SatNav systems, personally, I think they are more trouble than they are worth. (read more)

Seen a few negatives and past experience with Tom Tom made me nervous but my Tom Tom Go 720 arrived and with some trepidation I linked it to my PC to update and it was seamless, worked a treat. Couldn't download the latest map under their "guarantee" but hopefully Tomtom will sort me out. In the car all worked well, the windscreen holder people talk about is fine, small neat and it works well, not half so bulky as the last one. Hands free worked ok as did the music through the speakers, OK... (read more)
