I bought my SLR98 in .177cal a couple of months ago and I love it to bits! Excellent handling and accuracy! With mine I can take out small coins at 50yards+ with no problem. Very little recoil to speak of and I was told that it is a much sharper, quicker recoil with a gas ram which basically means that the pellet has already left the barrel before any 'kick' upsets the trajectory of the round. Whether that is true or not I'm not sure but I can tell you that it is WAY more accurate and consistent than my Wheirauch HW77k! It is a little front heavy but that suits me fine and you get used to it very quickly. The two position thumbhole stock (thumb up or through the hole) is beautifully crafted and is a lovely thing to behold and very comfortable to use. Some might say that for the money you could get a decent pre-charge rifle but I'd say that you will still need to buy a divers bottle for that and find somewhere to fill it up. Or you can get a shop to charge the rifle, either way the running cost of a pre-charge will soon tip the balance in favour of an SLR. It does have minor bad points however, it is possible to fire with an empty magazine which will damage the internals so you have to be careful. There are warning markers on the magazine to let you know when there is two, then one shot left but they could have been made easier to see. I have heard talk of Theoben gas ram rifles usually producing only 10fpp but mine has been tested and is producing 11.7 using Bisley Magnums. If it does ever lose power then it can be re-gassed easy enough by your local shop for less than £20 but unless you mistreat it then you should never need to do any more than give it a quick clean. You very rarely see these guns for sale second hand and there is a very good reason for this that will become apparent if you every buy one! If you have the money then get one because you wont regret it! Its as simple as that :D

Buy one today. Great workmanship. Solid product, with quality feel. Accurate and powerful. For a first airgun, I certainly made a good choice.
I'd say if you were only going to own one, then this might be the one! There is nothing bad worth mentioning. The Theoben SLR 98 Thumbhole is a great Air Rifle.

An excellent airgun both for the money and for the pleasure of shooting a very fine piece of art.
