Good Points: staff were friendly enough and sorted out a table quickly - not difficult however as there were no other customers when we arrived! The pub looks inviting and classy from outside - country chic! (we had hoped!)
Bad Points: We didn't need to know that ketchup makes the waitress feel sick, nor do we need to have staff pushing past us all evening to go to the storeroom away from the kitchens. The staff told us how tired they were as they'd been with the area manager all day...we don't need to know! We thought the food was over priced and - DREADFUL! The sauce on the salmon was bland and totally tasteless, with bits of lumpy roux floating around in it. Also, the sauce on the monkfish was equally tasteless. Generally we were very disappointed with the standard of the food - when we were being charged an average of £14.00 for a main course I expect a much better standard. We paid in excess of £95.00 for 6 main courses with a drink each (one of those was a kids meal). Way too high for a pub!
General comments: Pleasant attitudes - just very unsuitable conversation!
We had noticed the pub on our way to Crail from St Andrews and thought it looked lovely from the outside - quality umbrellas and tables outside etc added to the image. The food was such a let down. We had hoped for some wonderful Scottish home cooking - Arbroath smokies, maybe some good broth and stews. Good honest food. The menu seemed very uninteresting to us, very limited and too expensive. We were happy to pay, but you expect quality....we felt we didn't get it.
The door to the kitchens squeaked loudly and at length every time the door was opened. Sadly this was every 5 minutes as the storeroom/larder appears to have been located at the other end of the restaurant to the kitchens! Why?! My husband did mention the door to an employee, who said that it had only been oiled 3 weeks earlier...my husband suggested it needs doing daily as it is SO irritating to customers. On the whole HUGELY disappointed...we left feeling like we had been ripped off and frustrated that the pub looks so great - all the ingredients are there for it to work - but we felt the poor food means it is being let down badly.
