After viewing many breeders of akitas across the UK, I'm fed up of even going to see them. The dogs are very stupid, one of the breeds commonly found eating their own faeces or licking their bits out of boredom. They are simply horrid looking, with very squashed faces, very ugly looking jaw and facial structure, and tails which don't look right no matter what. Funny how they never win any awards. I do not recommend to anyone, they are not good for anything. They are also poor workers - and... (read more)

Every Japanese Akita dog is different. it depends who brings it up and the way it is trained. a bit like children! Loves the children, my akita is so gentle with my 1 and 4yr old kids. loyal to us. protects the garden. loves attention and fuss. can push his luck, you need to keep up strict obedience and rules to get the best out of them-its hard work showing them who is boss as they are of dominant nature, but it can be done. our dog sits, lays down, gives paw, stays in same spot when we say... we got our Japanese Akita in 1992 he was a great dog and gave us alot of fun times, akita's are very strong willed dogs and extremely powerfull, and i personally think that you need to a know a fair bit about dogs before getting one, and do alot of reserch on the breed. I also wouldnt be to quick to get one if there are children around. but appart from that doom and gloom he was a brilliant dog who you new would protect you no matter what. A great companion, great looking ,amazing... (read more)

After reading your opinion on the Japanese Akita i have to say you are wrong. The Akita depending on how they are brought up are very very loving and family oriented animals and i agree they have downfalls but so do everything and every animal. I have had Akitas for years and I think they are a much more majestic looking specimen of the dog world compared to, lets say a Husky or a Malamute. Akita's do win awards as a couple have one best in breed in crufts and best puppy, maybe your point of you is a dislike to the breed than the breed itself based on the 18 you've scrutinized.
