“Great value for money!”

★★★★☆

written by on 04/04/2016

I'm living here now and i'd recommend it for anyone who's looking for accommodation near to the city, the bus route goes right into Manchester and is really frequent. You also get a lot for your money with the en-suite rooms and on site parking. I was a little disappointed that there wasn't wi-fi but they're getting it for next year which should be good.

“Avoid at all costs!!!”

★☆☆☆☆

written by MalloryNunez495 on 23/05/2014

MSV SOUTH is the worst accommodation you could possibly consider. A sweeping remark you say? Absolutely not. From requesting a refurbished flat, I was told at the beginning of year I had the "only room left" and was placed in unrefurbished. Being cheaper, I agreed and moved in. How interesting it was to discover that every single other person I met was told the same and there were miraculously free rooms in my friends flats in the refurbished side. -the hob never worked and we were told it was too "expensive" to repair. One lighter was supplied to a flat of 4for every month upon our request with a 2 week wait: ureasonable, and I singed my fingers on numerous occassions because of this. -the contract included a TV. We were given a chunky 20th century television with 4 channels that didnt work. A missing remote. Again, never replaced. -general paint peeling, tiles missing from the bathroom, dirty bathroom when moved in, broken study chair, skirtingboard missing from kitchen- all of which was far too much to write on the inventory at the beginning of the year, yet we have had threats to charges. -within a week of living there the kettle and microwave and toaster didn't work. The oven had clearly never been cleaned. -no noise allowed and a maximum of 6 people in the flat at any one time -everywhere constantly stinks of weed -sofa's already damaged when moved in with no cushions- like sitting on a bed frame -the office people- incredibly rude and unhelpful, not understanding of any of the above from the first moving in day we had issues. Surely this means the accomodation is fairly quiet? Perhaps, compared to the likes of Cambridge Halls, however you will certainly be woken to the siren of a police car on average every hour blasting through Rusholme and Moss Side. Overall an absolute joke. It is no coincidence most of the reviews on here are bad, so bare in mind! You wouldnt book a holiday from the rubbish reviews on trip advisor so don't pay for a year here!!!

“Complete joke”

Firstly one of the main reasons coming to manchester was the massively hyped nightlife which is well known as well as university. However, to mine and I can speak for everybody else who i know here was a huge disappointment due to the fact that for some reason we were barely aloud to play music in our kitchen let alone barely talk! The security bother you constantly whilst they are on and take it upon themselves to come into my flat for no reason. Personally I think this is invasion of privacy. I would stay well well clear of MSV if you actually want to have a social life and meet people who aren't hermits most of the time.

On arrival, MSV south seems very appealing that is if you are in a refurbished flat. If you are in an non-refurbished then you have drawn the shortest straw possible. I was lucky enough to have a refurbished flat yet that's about the only positive I can think of. My room was a corner room which was poorly designed, there were no bedside plug sockets as well as a desk which was small even for dwarfs. If you were in a rush in the morning you'd better be prepared for a cold shower, I had to get in a routine of getting up putting my shower on cleaning my teeth and going to the toilet whilst I waited for the shower to heat up. Aside from the poor rooms, the social side is virtually non-existent. If you wanted to have a few friends round for drinks then this place is definitely where to invite them. On several occasions we were told to be quiet and turn the music off before 11 by the jobs worth of a security guard who is by far the most nosey person I have ever met. You might not be allowed to listen to music but you can smoke as much weed as you want, the place constantly smells of it, I wouldn't be surprised if people got high purely from the second hand smoking. If you want to be near to university you're in the wrong place. It's located on curry mile around a 20-30 minute walk to the universities or alternatively you could get a bus and waste more money. Money is another problem, the tiniest little claim they can make against you they will however we were promised working TV's however they only started working around January and no compensation was received. To conclude, if you have no social life, like weed, like nosey security and being ripped off then MSV South is the place for you!

“Stay well clear!”

written by Dayik462 on 13/05/2014

With Manchester having quite a big nightlife scene you would think coming to these halls full of students would be ideal if I planned on having a good time. I was wrong. Ever heard of pre drinks? Well in MSV South, this does not exist as you are only aloud 6 people in a room at one time according to the pesturing night porter who takes his job way too seriously who kicks everybody out if there is too many people having quiet drinks before going out. If you don't listen to these rules that he has quite clearly made up himself, he will turn off the electric and lights for the flat to ensure everybody leaves the flat. This is the main reason as to why I hate MSV South, the list does go on but I will only cover them briefly: The hobs for our cooker never worked from day 1, we had to use a lighter throughout the year to start the them The "cleaner" does not clean any part of the accomodation, a few times I've caught her on FaceTime rather than working The walls are damp so tiles are coming off the wall The place smells of weed 24/7 9/10 you will be woke up in the morning by a police cars sirens driving towards moss side If your kitchen is slightly dirty you are asked to clean or pay a £200 fine to get somebody to clean it - must be Mary Poppins for £200 haha. I would not recommend this accomodation to anybody who enjoys going out and having a good time

“Cracking place”

★★★★★

written by WilsonCH on 14/06/2013

As with most things you get out of it what you put in, people have had issues with things being quiet but then you are in a place with 300 plus other people so finding a social side of things isn't a problem for those with a mind to find it, or conversely it is a great place to sit and actually work for second years or those who are serious about study. The rooms are solidly built with thick walls and double glazing they are well sized (for halls of residence) and equiped with plenty of sockets and so forth. Everything is close by and most students with travel to the shops that are on the doorstep for food shops and the two main unis are 15 mins away on foot so you can hardly argue there about location. Pricing is the best by far of all the halls I have seen with comparable ones being roughly £30 a week more if uni owned thanks to that very handy bathroom all to yourself no matter the room package you go for. Most of the reviews seem to have been placed before the new managers came into play and things have perked up drastically with dedicated office staff and full time on site maintenence and cleaning throughout the week who have invested huge sums of money and time recently in adressing many of the issues that people seemed to have problems with. The attitude of the staff is relaxed and friendly and whilst if you have a problem with anything they are happy to help or if you have speakers going full blast at 3am they will come and say turn it down respect the fact that tennants there are adults and treat them as such with no meddling and the assumption that as a student you are bound to have ruined the room or something similarly terrible. There is a communal space with free telly and sofas provided in every flat that often served as a space to have friends round for a couple of drinks or just watch the rugby as a flat rather than the pricy option of a trip to the pub too! Having lived here for a year it is easily the best halls I have seen and it was not just the £400 saved with a rebooking package that drew me to stay again.

“Fantastic Place to Live”

★★★★★

written by on 03/05/2013

Before I moved in to MSV South I read a lot of bad reviews about the place, but they are most definitely not representative of my experience living there. First of all, the flats themselves are great value for money, and one of the cheapest in Manchester. The En Suite Bathroom was a real selling point for me as I couldn't stand the thought of sharing a bathroom with a bunch of random people i'd never met. Since I moved in on my own, the staff tried to put me into a flat with people they thought i'd get on well with. During my two year stay I had 5 different flatmates who were all great to live with and very friendly. One of my favorite aspects about living here was that you get to know all the members of staff, rather than them just being nameless faces you see walking around the site. It was a real pleasure staying with them, and I would recommend MSV South to anyone.

“Not a great place to live”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 30/01/2013

Whilst the rooms and flats at MSV South are more than adequate what disappointed me most about living there last year was how poor an environment it was socially. Over the year I felt like I spent most of my time walking or getting the bus further down Oxford Road to where most of my friends resided in the first year. Even if university halls are completely full or not for you the MSV building on Lower Chatham St which was in a ideal location for students attending MMU and any students wanting to have central Manchester on their doorstep. The place could definitely benefit from having some communal areas in the complex as it would perhaps make it a much more pleasant place to live... Personally, I was very glad to move out of MSV South. If you are a prospective student looking for halls, wanting to embrace the student lifestyle and see all the great things that Manchester has to offer I would not recommend living in this place.

“Really enjoyed living here”

★★★★★

written by vicki87 on 28/08/2012

Before moving into MSV south I saw some of the online reviews and have to admit that they did worry me. However, a friend of mine had lived here for 2 years in the past and was happy, so I figured it couldn't be too bad for her to have returned. I moved in on my own, but it is also possible to move in with friends. I was able to request to be in a flat with other girls but knew nothing about them. The girls that I was put with for each of my 3 contract lengths that I have been here have been great, and the office staff even chose people to put me with who they knew that I would get on with for my final contract. Some of my flatmates have become really good friends. There have been small issues whilst I have been living here such as late night parties and appliances not working properly but when I have spoken to the office staff about these issues they have always been sorted out. The office staff have been so kind whilst I've been here, always willing to see how they can help or to just have a bit of a chat. The maintenance team are great too, really friendly and efficient. I'm coming to the end of my contract at MSV south now after 2 years and I can honestly say I will miss the place. Things aren't always perfect, sometimes it is noisy when I'm trying to do work or get an early night, but it's student halls and I bet that anywhere would be the same. The prices here are some of the cheapest halls in Manchester even though they are en-suite, and it's always nice to have your own bathroom! I regularly recommend MSV south to students at my uni, it's located in a brilliant place for MMUs Elizabeth Gaskell campus but is also really close to the other campuses and the bus stop is just outside for going to and from town. I really would recommend living here.

“Actually Pretty Good”

★★★★☆

written by on 18/07/2012

I read bad things online just before moving into the accommodation which was a negative start to the year. However it wasn't long before I started to love this place. I'm so glad I decided to live here. Other students moan about their halls to me, how dirty the boys are in the shared toilets, how the security man threw everyone out of their party etc. We'll we have en suites and the security man is pretty cool... It just depends what kind of halls you are looking for, MSV was perfect for me, the first night I arrived I was invited to a party, as was everyone else in the 4 blocks beside me and that was it, I had about 30 new friends. You get a lot of freedom unlike other halls and the car park is perfect for playing volleyball. Its a great location, half way between Fallowfield and the city center, no complaints. Well, not too many.

“dont bother living here. ”

written by steph182 on 17/07/2012

I lived her for the 2011-2012 academic year and it has to be the worst place I have ever been to, never mind lived. For four months straight we had builders drilling from 8am till about five making it impossible to sleep or even study through. We was not informed about this when our contract was signed and if I had known I would never have moved here. I constantly had people looking in my room and watching me, and they even had the cheek to wave at me when I was watching something on the tele! This is how close the windows in the complex are. From that point on my window stayed closed. Though this was a must at night time with the Asian gatherings outside in the car park blasting their music till gone five in the morning. The security guard was useless as he just walked around them. Also the rubbish everywhere was a big problem. We had people rummaging though the bins to see what they could take and at one point there was six different women in one bin! The staff just stood there and watched them do it. I moved out early to get away from this place and can't wait to see the back of it.

“Two sides to the tale ... ”

As the new manager of MSV South & Heald Grove I would like to pass comment on some on the reviews that have previously been left as I feel compelled to give an overall view of the site and our service. With some four hundred residents each year, for the past ten years, we have seen several thousand tenants pass through our doors, in this time we have served many from their first year through to graduation. Sadly, few have left feedback as it seems less the done thing. I am genuinely saddened by those who have had negative experiences, as a selection of 7 comments from the several thousand happy customers this is a minimal percentage spanning over many years – however every experience is addressed and procedures have changed in this time to ensure such cases do not reoccur. We pride ourselves on the service that is offered to ensure comfort and enjoyment to all of our residents. I would like to invite those considering booking accommodation to visit us and make a judgement of how they feel the service is as we stand today. Please visit our Facebook page – Msv South (Heald Grove) for full details of room availability, prices and offers or contact us for further details. Many thanks Kate Barnes Site Manager

“Awful, happy to have left!”

★★☆☆☆

written by pchikaviro on 16/10/2011

The only positive thing about this place is the convenience, it's surrounded by shops & 15 mins walk to a university of Manchester & 20 mins walk to Manchester Metropolitan. This advantage also works as a disadvantage because it's in a convenient location there's a lot of noise; I couldn't sleep in my room because of loud music, ambulances & police sirens. There is no lift & I was unfortunate to get top floor (4th floor) so it was a struggle everyday. The rooms weren't in good condition, mine was considerably smaller than my flatmates' despite paying the same price. One of my flatmates had no paint on the bottom half of her bedroom walls & mould on her bathroom ceiling. There are tons more problems I had here, all I can say is I was happy to leave. I advise anyone considering staying here to RE-CONSIDER it's really not worth it!

written by cuuham on 06/09/2011

I rent a room in the MSV last year . The room is acceptable however it is sometimes quiet nosy since many restaurants and main road is near . The worst thing that I experenced in MSV is the quality of their office service . Their service did not work well at all . Last summer holiday , I can not come to collect my key at the time when the contract started at 5th of September. So I came to the office and asked if my friend can collect the key with my permission . The office said :" YES , ABSOULTELY CAN ". I confirmed them three more times before booking my flight ticket . However , when I call them again , they turned their answer to "NO" . I wasreally socked because I did not have any places to put my luggage after the 5th . Even when I say that if I could not get the key , all my stuff would be put outside the road and no one can help me , THEY STILL SAY " NO , PUT YOUR STUFF IN THE STORAGE , I DO NOT CARE ". That is the heartless thing which a person can say . It is their fault to give me the wrong answer and after that they said they did not care how I can slove the problem . I turned out to pay extra money to put my stuffs in storage and really disapointted So I just remind you to check double time any information which the office gives to you . There was no consistences between them . They maybe friendly and helpful when introducing the apartment for you . However , after you sign the contract and pay the money , their attitude is quite bad . It was my experience . Hope that it can help you

i think generally, most offices and companies in manchester tend to only find you important or worth the while if they will get money from you but the moment nothing (monetary) binds you to them, their attitude is simply awful. i have found most customer service in manchester to be rude, kurt, abrupt, patronising, to mention a few.
I have had someone mess up an appointment and i was naturally expressing my disappointment and two of their staff had no empathy whatsoever, let alone apologise. they say one thing over the phone and when things turn out bad, they blatantly deny telling simply because they are toooo proud to take ownership of their errors.. it really upsets me, customer services in machester

“Why no one should ever go to MSV South”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 09/06/2011

MSV South halls of residence are hell on earth, I have been living above a flat that has been playing music virtually non stop all year. The msv staff are unhelpful and have done nothing about this, and when I have made a complaint I am met with the same responce that 'a letter has been sent'. The behaviour of this flat is anti social but this doesnt seem to register with the management. I am paying too much money for such a poor service. The facilities are old and at breaking point, do not believe the pictures the student accomadation website. There is no security either, on 2 occations my flat mates have been followed home by strangers and on one occasion, becuase the security door lock was broken a man was able to follow one flat mate to our flat twice. The people who loiter around these halls always seem suspicious and I was told, a few years ago there was an issue of drug dealing in the car park. Do not apply to these halls because you will not get the university experience you are looking for especially if you are a first year. These halls should be closed down and the staff should fired because they do nothing.

If I'm very honest i've lived here for almost a year and we've had a few problems but nothing like everyone else is saying, yea there are chavs in the car park blasting music but if you close your doors you cant hear it, there are tramps everywhere but theyre just there and theres nothing you can do about it so just get on with it and if you dont give them hassle they wont do anything! For the price all bills are included its a nice place to stay, its not to far from either uni and the resterants and shops are all on your doorstep, it's only a fiver for a taxi home after a night out in town and the rooms are of a reasonable size, staff in the office are friendly and have dealt with every problem i have had promptly, i didn't get into student halls so chose this one and compared to some of my friends flats that are in halls they think my accom is gorgeous, flats include sofas and telly which are not provided in student accom, I would reccomend and am planning to live here next year but to get a double bed room as the single beds are a bit on the small side! plus having an en suite is lovely as i wouldn't wanna share a halls toilet with 9 other people!

written by on 05/01/2011

THIS IS ABSOLUTELY THE WORST PLACE I HAVE EVER LIVED. We have MICE running around in the the flat!!! when i complained about it they said there was nothing they could do so i would just have to live with it!!! On top of all of that the asian staff member was very rude and threatened to throw me out when i complained.

OTHER NEGATIVES

THE WATER STOPS WORKING FOR A FEW DAYS AT A TIME!!! SO U CANT SHOWER OR HAVE ANY WATER AGAIN ANY COMPLAINT IS MET WITH THE SAME RESPONSE. BASICALLY WE WILL FIX IT LATER JUST LIVE WITH IT.
Hugh100's review says they take 2/3s of the payment in the first two months is true which is rediculous.
and jaykays revew says theres always chavs blasting out music in the carpark which is definately true!!! theres always chavs hanging around and also theres some homeless people that like hanging around in the carpark. you might think this isnt a big deal but trust me it will affect u every day!!
you can also hear whats going on in the flat aboove and bellow all day.
And on top of all of that its way too expensive.

trust me i am not exaggerating at all I WOULD NEVER RECOMEND THIS PLACE TO ANYONE!!!!!!!!!
I'd rather stay in prison i bet they get better conditions than this!!!!!!!!

In my opinion Rusholme MSV is not impressive at all, small rooms and a seemingly untraceable bad smell, weird men always at the edge of the accommodation, chavs like to hang out in the worldwide carpark at night blasting loud music making every car alarm go off due to the base!

depending on how tight with money you are, you can get so much better for less, if its all about the ensuite i have friends who live in MSV (the one in the city)... and that is much nicer though 3 of them have to share 1 toilet... its not the worst thing on earth! i would not reccommend this place to anyone.
