Good Points: Central. Good barstaff. Room for a boogie if so inclined. Cheap bottles of wine.
Bad Points: Toilets. Price of spirits.
General comments: Madogs on George Street, Edinburgh [New Town], is situated fairly centrally. Within walking distance of Waverley Train Station. We came across this place quite by accident, and it was an excellent find! You enter down a set of steep stairs - so may not be suitable for everyone. Two friendly doormen on duty who are religious at checking for under-age drinkers. [I was a bit miffed they didn't ask to see my ID... haha].
Large bar area with a wide range of wines and spirits. Deal of the day had to be the bottle of wine for £7.50, which is exceptional value for Edinburgh. Spirits were more pricey, although not overly so. Us girls stuck with the wine, but the men were mostly drinking whisky [a round of four came to roughly £16].
There is a resident DJ who plays lots of good tunes. You are encouraged to put up requests. A large floor area can quickly become the dance floor! The bar staff are friendly and efficient. No designated smoking area, so you have to go back up the stairs and onto George Street if you want a puff.
The only negative point about this bar was the toilets. I can't comment on the gents, but the ladies room, although adequate, could do with major refurbishment. Although they weren't the cleanest in town, I have been in a lot worse, so wouldn't let this put you off.
We ended our night in Madogs and we all agreed that we would keep it in mind the next time we were in the city.
