We used Capital Hire (West Hampstead) once because our usual local company was fully booked - we would never use them again. I feel compelled to write this review of Capital Hire to explain what happened, and hopefully help others avoid a similar experience. To be fair, their service was initially quite reasonable, as was the price. Returning the van that we'd hired was fine too, and their representative inspected it and declared all to be well. The problem came a few hours later when they rang us up to say that they'd since found a chip in the windscreen and were going to charge us for its repair. Of course, if there were any chips in the windscreen they were nothing to do with us and certainly hadn't appeared during our rental period - but by then it was too late for us to demonstrate otherwise. Their policy is to check the vehicle immediately upon its return - which they did, in front of us - so it seems very suspicious to me that they only discovered this problem just a short while after we'd left the premises. Their bill for repair is several hundred pounds and we're still contesting it several weeks later. I've since discovered from comments on this site that we're not the only ones to have had this sort of problem with Capital Hire. I strongly recommend that people steer clear of them - my personal view is that they're a bunch of crooks.

WARNING - Do not use these charlatans.
I foolishly booked a van with these people without first researching them on the internet.
As has previously been said, they will take the deposit in advance and then fight tooth and nail not to pay anything back. The van was brand new, which is understandable if they keep the £350 deposit from every booking.
I phoned them today to enquire about my deposit. They said that a dent had been found on the rear driver's door (even though it was a van?! ...- Read mudspider's review (181 words)

Tiniest scratch equals big charge, Capital Car and Van Hire check fuel level on a steep slope to look like more in tank, charge for extra mileage over 100miles.- Read Guest's review (29 words and 1 comment)

I have rented a car for Easter from the Capital Car and Van Hire Hampstead branch. The car was in excellent condition and the price was good. However, when I was returning the car, they have found an imaginary fault with a tyre and decided to charge me the full amount to replace the tyre. This was of course not something that is usually checked when taking a vehicle. As the company didn't reimburse me the full amount immediately I had to call on several occasions and on one have overheard anothe ...- Read Guest's review (108 words)

Capital Hire -- Wow, where do I begin? They took out our 250 pound deposit before we even saw the car, along with the 250 pound price we paid to rent the vehicle. We went to pick up our car Friday morning and had to wait 2 hours because someone else was reportedly late returning it. We were on the road for an hour(on our way to Scotland) when the car's transmission went so haywire we could no longer accelerate and were almost smashed by the cars behind us. We had to wait on the side of the road ...- Read Guest's review (433 words)

I was really worried having read a review about Capital Car and Van Hire. I was bringing a youth cricket team to England and we were unsure how it would go. There was not one problem with any aspect of delivering, collecting, refunding deposit.
Delivered bus and van on time in horley, deliverer didn't have gps with him so lent us his from his car, collected on time in London , both vehicles in excellent condition and hirer showed us slight damage on vehicle, great price.- Read dockerhutch's review (90 words)

We found Capital Van Hire through the Sixt website, and Sixt gave me the contact telephone number as the one on their site did not work. Booked the VW Transporter T28 by phone. It was in very good condition with only 1200 miles on the clock. We were asked to pay a 350GBP deposit plus 65 GBP for the 24 hour rental. Checked the bodywork before taking van away. Returned it in good time, and the employee checked the van again and said it was all good. Returned to the office from the drop-off point ...- Read chelsea581's review (190 words)

After telling us 3 times that the hire included congestion charge and that because it was a 9 seater it was exempt anyway, they still passed on the charges to us. After numerous phone calls trying to point out their mistake they seemed incredibly rude to me and would not except the charge.- Read Guest's review (56 words)

I hired two vehicles from Capital Car and Van Hire in October 2007. I paid for the vehicles over the phone using a Maestro card (never again!). The hire itself went well, but when one of the vehicles was returned the company claimed it was damaged and withheld £213 from the deposit.
In addition, I still haven't been paid the balance of the deposit, which is £219.- Read annevans40's review (118 words)

Hired a van from Capital Car and Van Hire in 2001. The van, a Fiat Ducato, was not roadworthy and after we'd had a bad accident in which the left rear wheel FELL OFF whilst driving, it turned out that the van was not even insured for road use. I was verbally abused when I reported the accident. I advise you to stay well clear of Capital Car and Van Hire.- Read MidgetViking's review (82 words)
