“Bad customer service”

Written on: 15/05/2013

I went into Boots Opticians in Billericay (the original premises) as there are two Boots Opticians, to make an appointment for an eye test. The person that I spoke to wanted to lecture me on if I was entitled to a N.H. test. As I am over 65 and quite aware of the procedure, I did not need to have my business broadcast to everybody in the shop. Her voice could have been heard outside the shop even with the door shut. I found the whole experience of visiting Boots Opticians in Billericay, a... (read more)

“DO NOT USE BOOTS THE OPTICIANS!”

Boots Opticians must have the most unhelpful, unco-operative, obstructive, rude, obnoxious staff in the UK! Their complaints procedure is totally ineffective. Be warned! If you want a happy, stress-free life, stay well away from this company! (read more)

“Rude and unhelpful”

Written on: 11/05/2013

I was ten minits late for my appointment, for which I apologised. How ever when the manger came out she did not even greet me but had a stern look on her face. She insisted she could not see me. The opticians was empty there were two staff present. Having been caught in heavy traffic I thought she could have been more reasonable. It is difficult for most people to leave work early. I then replied I would have to go to another optician as I do not drive and the traffic is always bad. In a... (read more)

“No replacements magnetic clip-on sunglasses available”

Bought a new pair of glasses under a year ago. (Got an actual pair of prescription sunglasses as part of the deal...Great) BUT. the magnetic clip-on that fitted my normal glasses are where they have a problem. I inadvertently lost my clip-ons... so I went to Boots to purchase some more. they cannot do that as the clip-ons were part of the deal and are not sold separate. people will lose the clip-ons (just like me). “Avoid Pinner Branch”

Written on: 17/04/2013

They are only interested while selling glasses to you. If you have a problem after purchase, and go for help they quickly fob you off. Not enough interest in customers well being. Having spent £300 at the store, I was not happy with the fitting of the glasses - but I was told there was nothing they could do - tightened the frame for me and sent me on my way by the sales assistant. Optician had no interest to speak to me. (read more)

I have been using dolland and aitchinson for years and since changing to boots opticians I went there in July last year. Still has the same manager and a few of the same staff, but plenty of new ones (Staines branch) I felt that my eye test was quick and not as thorough as previously - this turned out to be correct as my vision for the TV is still blurry?! - aside from that I told the lady I had a budget but she kept on picking up frames from the more expensive range??? “Opticians?”

Had an appointment for a Diabetes review and photograph of the eye, on completion was asked if I would like to book an eye appointment? I have been going for the last few years and had both together, but now informed you have to book separately well sat there with £700 to get new glasses, told them I won't becoming back here, Dollinson and Hatchinson were really good just goes to show what a big company typically does to a reputable company. “Plain awful!”

Written on: 27/03/2013

I visited Boots when moving to a new area. It was a very strange set up where some of the shop floor staff conduct some of the eye test. I was very surprised to discover that I had to pay an additional £10 if I wanted a photograph of the eye. I have an involuntary eye movement and a member of staff seemed to get almost annoyed with me because I struggled to keep my eye still in one part of the eye examination. I ordered some new glasses and they were very expensive. The staff seemed to... (read more)

I had a similar experience today when I went into Boots Optician in Newcastle for an eye test. Eye test was fine, although I was quite surprised by the extra charge of £10 for the digital photography of the retina, which I declined. The assistant said the optician would go over what the image showed but this did not happen.
The worst part was the complete lack of interest from the shop assistant in helping me choose a frame. In the end, I walked out without buying any new glasses. I prefer to spend my money elsewhere.

“Don't bother getting a prescription from Boots”

Written on: 27/03/2013

I booked in for a prescription only as I wanted to buy my glasses online. I told the staff that I was buying glasses elsewhere. I had my test and was given my prescription. I went home, entered as much information as I could but you also need to know the distance from pupil to pupil. I went back into the store to ask to have this done and they said they only do it if you buy glasses through them. I said I paid for a prescription and all measurements required should be provided - I can't... (read more)

Hmm...not sure how you expect High Street opticians to survive if you only use them for getting an eye test. The on-line places have no professional staff to pay - some who spent three years or more studying in their field, nor do they have the outlay involved in putting an optical practice together. Some of the equipment costs tens of thousands of pounds.

Fact is, legally the pupil distance forms no part of the eye test and by providing it you would have doubtlessly expected Boots to assume responsibility even though the onus lies with the supplier of the glasses.

If you then discovered on receipt that the glasses didn't feel right you would probably go back to the High Street and expect them to check them for you. Again most opticians wouldn't charge for this service, which is just as well as most on-line buyers don't feel they should have to pay for it.

If the staff were rude then I agree with you, that is poor service. However, if you think the service is lousy purely because you didn't get something you weren't entitled to in the first place, maybe you might reconsider buying such bespoke items on the internet and relying on the goodwill of disappearing High Street shops to put it right when things go wrong.

If they offer stand alone eye tests for prescription purposes, knowing full well that customers often purchase brands that they don't stock from other stores, then I expect every measurement required to purchase from another supplier to be included. I ended up going to Specsavers who measured my pupil distance and made my glasses up but the lenses don't feel right. I don't blame Specsavers as my last pairs were made by them also. I stand by my review, Boots are lousy and I cannot recommend them at all. Spend the extra £20 and have it done properly somewhere else.

I went to the Boots in Paternoster Square because I hadn't been very happy with Specsavers who I had been with previously. Booked an appointment and then had a call the night before my appointment to say that the optician wouldn't be in and changing it to another day. “Staff not well trained”

I've been going to boots opticians for at least 3 years now. I felt confident about the eyes checks they did to get my prescription. However, I felt they didn't do a good job in: 1) Giving advice in the choice of glasses: I went to 2 branches (Leamington and Birmingham) and the employees I spoke with didn't seem to have any idea of what the numbers written inside the frame mean -the measures of the glasses, the minimum I would expect them to know. Same sort of thing has just happened to me, I was at the branch for 3 hours because they were busy. It took two weeks for them to arrive and I collected them yesterday and after half an hour of them trying to adjust them they stillkeep sliding down my nose! Things are blurry I paid £100 for the gold lenses, I went to Specsavers the last 2 times (in 4 years) and had Esilor Comfort lens, they knew this and I specifically asked them to match them, agree advise from the sales team seems pretty thin on the ground. Wish me luck when I go back!

So sorry to hear that. But I wish I had read reviews before as well. I have never used/needed glasses before but because of headaches and constant irritations and tired eyes I decided to see an optician. Saw other professionals and totally felt their urge to sell designer frames on offer so I moved to Boots in Oxford Street whereas at first I was extremely well served, even fitted on a last minute cancellation. First impressions were of a very busy branch but lots of staff so they looked fairly busy but content. First staff was very kind and led me to various tests that really gave me a headache - this was 3:05pm taking about 20/25min. Then I was taken downstairs to speak to another optometrist and more tests, (the lenses ones), quite long and tiring in my opinion. Then, nearly 4pm, my friend that was waiting for me had left with her baby and as my phone died, I've asked one staff if I could charge it and he replied, "not allowed by the boss"... So I tried the "boss" and she promptly went look for someone with an iPhone charger and helped me kindly, that was really nice of her given that I was there longer than the 30' they said I would be in. Optometrist tell the first time I need to re-make another test apparently with no good results for first time tested and I'm sent upstairs again for it, which disappointed me, cos now I'm officially with a headache, without contact with my friend that seemed to have left with her child and I need to go pick up my kids (already 4:30!!!) and gentleman doing my test and speaking (I guess Arabic) with another lady he works, kept moving that support between my chin and forehead and that was really annoying... Kept "patronising" - "you're doing really well, dear! Don't worry, will be finished soon, don't blink! You don't want to do this test again, do you? That's it, nearly done!"... Ufa! My head ringing bells, dinner time for me and I still have an hour journey to go home, am worried about my kids, at least my phone charged and I managed to contact help but I still needed to wait for smtg and sent to wait downstairs again. Shop getting emptier until I decide to ask what I am waiting for... Another professional kindly saw me asking for toilet for the "patronising" one that totally ignored my question perhaps too busy at this point, guess he'd finished his shift and clearly was rushing, so this other "angel" opened her staff toilet for me... Then perhaps I've missed someone coming with my results and people thought I left ;( I left the shop angry, tired, disappointed how such a big branded chain like Boots played with my needs... Of all these staff messing with my eye test I guess only the Optometrist lady was professional. The lady trying to sell my frames (very friendly and untill now she seemed to know what she was doing) after also had to ask another senior before requesting the right ones and as I preferred to collect them in a branch closer to me, she chose it in front of me in her PC screen and said in 7/10 days my new first glasses would arrive in Eltham branch. Today is the 23rd, my eyes hurt to write on pcs, under light etc, headaches on and no signs of glasses anywhere. Contacted Boots Oxford Street and lady with strong Russian accent very helpful at first but not so much towards end said my glasses weren't there, they don't know where it was and she couldn't do much cos staff that dealt with my case was off shift. Hey?
I asked if no one else can help me instead - she replies she'll try her best, the post office won't sent to Eltham in time given weekend and that I should wait for a call by Monday. Frustrating! Worse: I was "invited" to do this "fundus camera shot" for £10 which I was ok thinking my other tests were free like in other branch I've done and doubted their results. Boots prescription had a degree different in one eye than I had in first "competition brand" so I'm left wondered if I really need glasses... And I had to pay £30 for the tests plus £25 for the simplest boring frame they had as I thought with everything else they were trying to sell in package (varifocals, anti risk, anti shine, etcs ) was far too expensive and unnecessary at first as I was just recommended to use for reading. These £65 went so quickly and easy in an afternoon I was so tired after so many tests but truly believing I needed them in the end and respecting their work but now I've felt like I was in the middle of a group of selling team, not worried about your optician needs but in sell sell sell.
And I still haven't seem my glasses.

"Not sure where I should begin".

After reading your tale of woe, guest, I am sure where *I'll* begin and that's to scold you for not taking heed of all the negativity on Review Centre concerning Boots Opticians before you went there. With so many people giving them a virtual thumbs down on reviews that go back far enough for you not to have possibly missed them, why you did not do so I can only wonder. Or is it that you don't normally visit here? If so, you should as is evidenced by your unfortunate experience.

A chain store is the last place I would go for anything to do with eyesight problems and I therefore favour a well-established optican of good repute and who has the appropriately qualified staff. The type of establishment where you get properly deferred to and where you have to extract yourself from the carpet pile on concluding your business with them.

May I suggest that you seek out a similar optician, and considering the size of your town, surely there must be one! Or have the Wombles taken over everything? :-).

Do have better luck in future - and don't forget, luck can be the result of careful research and planning and I will conclude with offering my condolences and wishes for your future optical happiness.

I'm not sure people can be "scolded" for not taking heed of information on this site. Big stores like boots do have a reputation, and like halfords usually aren't a bad bet. Plus, reviews on this site are often from bad experiences, people are less likely to review "not bad" service. And yes you are right, people don't ALWAYS visit here. R/c could almost do with some tv (or other) marketing.

Having said that. My review of boots opticians isn't good, to do with glasses fitting. Previously i've been to other smaller opticians, and they've got my prescription itself wrong. Boots did at least give me the right lens

Similar thing happened to me last year. I couldn't get used to the varifocals and was told to keep trying. “LOUSY SERVICE AT DERBY< BUT CUSTOMER CARE & CEO EVEN WORSE”

Written on: 29/11/2012

I am an OAP living in Germany. Glasses are one of the things that are a lot more expensive there than in England – almost double the price. So, back in August when I came over to visit my daughter, I thought it a good opportunity to get my eyes tested and get new glasses. I only had just over a fortnight to play with, so my first question to all of the opticians that I visited was how long it would take before they were ready for collection. 3 of Boots competitors all gave the same answer... “Meh...”

Written on: 26/11/2012

I have been going to a local, independent Optician for over 15 years and have always worn glasses. After a eye test where my prescription had changed I decided that I wanted to try out lenses but being a local business my old opticians were not very competitive on price so I decided that I would become a customer of Boots Opticians. First Appointment: Left me waiting at the reception desk whilst 5 members of staff had a conversation behind it. Literally for about 5 or 6 minutes, I... (read more)

“Discraceful customer service!”

Written on: 09/11/2012 by CHARLOTTENAOMI

This is the boots opticians in sevenoaks, kent. I usually attend this boots opticians and had booked an appointment to talk about getting contact lenses. I was 3 minutes late and was told I was 10 minutes late and couldn't have the appointment. The woman was very, very rude. She rolled her eyes, spoke in a rude way and was just snobby! (only way I can describe it) I was even more annoyed because she didn't even offer to make me another appointment or say anything in the situation. After I... (read more)

“Utterly Appalling - Ealing Branch, London”

Written on: 04/11/2012

My experience at Boots Opticians Ealing was utterly appalling. I paid for an eye test, they wrote down my prescription in reverse which I believe was an attempt  to force me return to their store to buy glasses from them. I had to have another eye test, this time at Specsavers and the lenses in my new glasses replaced to correct Boots' mistake. When I complained, they refused to admit the error even though their prescription was the reverse of my old prescription as well as my new one! In... (read more)

“worst opticians EVER”

Written on: 31/10/2012

I went to boots because it is my local opticians BIG mistake. After they knew i would be supplying my own Ray Ban glasses they tried to add on every extra charge possible. The gentleman carrying out my test was very good and thorough until i told him i was exempt to pay for prescription lenses then he didn't seem too bothered.after being told i was exempt for prescription lenses they still tried to charge me £47! What for i do not know and neither did they. all they seemed bothered about... (read more)

“Wonderful Test and Lovely Knowledgable Staff”

Written on: 24/10/2012

I attended Boots opticians in Kirkcaldy, the test was the most through test I have ever had and the lady was very kind and explained everything to me. She found that I required no new glasses as the test was the same as my current ones. The front shop staff (a gentleman with short dark hair) was really helpful and tightened my glasses for me. I cannot fault this Opticians and will definetly go again. (read more)

“A diffierent opticians next time!!”

Written on: 23/10/2012 by spec1 (1 review written)

Thoroughly disappointed with my glasses especially for the amount paid!! Although I paid for 'gold' rated varifocals they do not appear to be very good quality and the vision span is disgusting - I dread to think what it would be like for the lower grade. I purchased the 'buy one, get one free' but had to return one pair as the thinlight lenses seemed to irritate my eyes and also the frames were very uncomfortable. After a second eye test and further discussion, the lenses were changed to... (read more)

“Excellent service”

Written on: 18/10/2012 by LaDiva

I have nothing but praise for the Crawley W.Sussex branch. Several years ago the Optician picked up a condition (no symptoms) with my eyes and arranged for me to see a Specialst the next day. Then another test revealed something else and again they arranged for me to see another Specialist whilst I was still in the Store. The varifocals I bought then, three years ago, have been excellent until this week when one of the arms fell off so I took them back hoping for a possible repair.... (read more)

“Utter incompetence”

Written on: 15/10/2012 by sfc123 (1 review written)

Boots opticians. Where do i start. I signed up for the contact lens reward scheme in July and paid for 3 months worth of lenses, after being sold their product by them in store, for the good of my eyes. They advised me my daily brand was damaging my eyes and could lead to problems later in life. So, after wearing their lenses for 2.5 months I start wondering when the 4th pair would arrive in the post. Then I am sent a direct debit mandate, which is odd as they've already deducted the money... (read more)

“Wrong Prescription Strength”

Written on: 14/10/2012 by ArthurHorsman (1 review written)

Had my eyes tested at Hastings Boots, said my eyes had improved and there fore need new glasses which i agreed too. Went to collect them but could only see blurred images. I pointed this out to them and was told i would get used to them, i pointed out that i had a number of new pairs of glasses over the years and never been unable to focus. I was forced to take them away, dispite saying i could not drive and the reply i got from the manager was "dont drive". I spent that weekend with... (read more)

“Terrible customer service - very poor administration”

Written on: 24/09/2012 by Hodicle (1 review written)

Was a contact lens customer of Boots Milton Keynes optician few years, with relatively few problems until this year. Changed my contact lens prescription and that's when it all started to go wrong. I ordered an extra set of new contact lenses prescription in addition to my normal automatic three month order. Despite paying in advance, and promised a max two week delivery these lenses never arrived. It then took me 3-4 calls and even a visit to the shop to try to sort it out. Staff said... (read more)

“Shoddy fit”

Written on: 16/09/2012

I was persuaded to get varifocal lenses by the Optician for distance, computer and reading. I found them hard going and the fitting of the frames is very poor the arms are too short and dig into my ears, despite them being "re-adjusted" by an operative in store, I am not happy with the whole outcome. I will not return to Boots for my optical needs in future. (read more)

“Boots Orpington - Total waste of time”

Written on: 12/09/2012

Went to Boots in Orpington to get two pairs of specs, varifocals and a pair for reading/computer screen (what they called occupational lenses). After the test, frames were picked and marked up whilst wearing them for alignment. They will be ready between 7 and 10 days - we will call you, I was assured. 14 days later no call so I popped in and guess what - they were there waiting - nobody had bothered to call nor did I get an apology. As for the glasses - they were a disaster neither pair... (read more)
