Took over 4000 shots, and have since taken thousands more pictures. Excellent zoom capability and image quality in a very compact design. Only quibble is with the battery cover, which is worryingly...

I've had the Canon PowerShot S5 IS for quite a while now and I was looking forward to putting it through it's paces (I already had the S1 1S so was used to it's basic layout in the menu system) so I was able to get started right away and was eagerly awaiting to compare the 2 and what upgrades the newer model had to offer. I had made my decision after much research on the internet and found this to have everything I needed and because it was 12 months old now it was at a bargain price for... (read more)

What you see through viewfinder is what you see on screen, so can use like conventional camera. Comfortable to hold. Quality of photos excellent, digital zoom photos quite good too. Canon PowerShot S5 IS is an excellent all round bridge camera with good quality output. (read more)

For a "compact" camera, the Canon PowerShot S5 IS is very good and versatile. Tilt/Swiwel LCD; Good zoom range; Image stabilization; Good grip; Great video performance; Many manual controls; Flash hot shoe. Mediocre wide angle (36mm equiv.); button layout; Buttons lack sensitivity; Mediocre continuous shooting; Ridiculous lens cap (read more)

Not going to use Canon again after this experience. Optical Viewfinder is all but useless and cannot be used in sunlight. For many serious photographers, an optical viewfinder is a must.
Difficult to get clear shots on zoom without a tripod.
