Good Points: Ease of purchase and on-line support

Bad Points: Complicated support by telephone, Specifications change frequently

General comments: I must start by saying that I am writing this from the viewpoint of someone who works in IT and is dealing with business machines and servers.I have supported HP machine for over 10 years now back when they were Compaq. I have had mixed feelings about there equipment over the years. At first I hated them as they used non standard parts, then I loved them when there EP range used standard chassis and were very upgradable. They have reverted back to their old style now with lots of non standard parts, but I feel that their machines are much better than they used to be. The ease of getting hold of them compared to the likes of Dell is great as they are standard builds and available off the shelf from thousands of resellers. There is a lot of commonality across the desktop range which makes it easier to find the drivers you require. There web site makes it easy to find drivers from the model number. I have always found their service to be very good. For simple parts like PSU's or Hard drives that are replaced under warranty, it is usually next working day. Things do get a bit more complicated if you have to send stuff away though. HP use authorised repair centres for their equipment repair and it can take some time. However I haven't had to send anything away for some time. Most of their destops only really have about 5 components. Hard drive, mainboard, memory, CD drive and PSU all of these can be replaced by post. I would definitely recommend them for business machines.

I just bought a brand new Hewlett Packard laptop. The screen on the one I bought malfunctioned within 2 weeks of use. I'm sitting here 4 weeks later with still no laptop - while it's been sitting with them for repair. I had a dell for years and never any significant issue and good support from them when needed. The service from HP is about the worst I've come across in relation to any big company.
