“SAGA CAR INSURANCE (customer Services)”

Written on: 11/05/2013

Cannot express my disgust at saga customer service. I changed my car to one which should have been cheaper insurance. I was not happy with the fact that saga however increased my premium. I had to pay the extra £20 they wanted for the outstanding 4 months of the policy, as it would have cost me £50 to cancel and go with someone else. Anyway it does not end there. I moved house and informed saga, but my renewal went to the old house After a lot of trying to talk to customer services and... (read more)

“Car Renewal insurance review”

Written on: 09/04/2013

I am very angry at the way that Saga seems to have taken advantage of me by renewing my car insurance each year by direct debit. I agreed to this and was under the impression that I was dealing with a company that deals with the older generation and would look after and assist us - the only assistance Saga has given is to line their pockets with my money. I have been a customer of Saga for the last 10 years, and have never questioned the renewal that was sent though the post until last... (read more)

Written on: 10/01/2013 by TrevorLikely (1 review written)

I have recently left SAGA following their very poor performance following a collision when someone drove into the rear of my car whilst I was stopped at traffic lights. He was well insured and admitted full responsibility. I reported the collision to SAGA and told them I would not be making a claim because the culprit's insurer had offered to take care of everything. SAGA advised me that I should not take up that offer: instead I should let them handle it. However, SAGA said that I would... (read more)

“Take the Intro offer them change companies.”

Written on: 23/11/2012 by Squeakyboythomas

My online and introductory offer for car insurance with Saga is due for renewal and has jumped from £280 to £345. I've been on several comparison websites and there are numerous policies from around £200. OK my mileage is much less now (by 5,000 per year) but the car is one year older - this price difference is astronomical. Also, the lady in their Renewals Dept didn't seem bothered or surprised so clearly they don't want the business and they won't be getting it. (read more)

“SAGA RIP OFF”

My motorhome insurance expires end of November, my premiums have gone sky high year after year. SAGA said the reason being left hand drive, no alarm and the high power, I bought a RHD Vehicle with thatchem 1 alarm and much lower power output, the result was a higher premium, just under £600, I have changed insurer and now pay just over £250. “Service now atrocious”

Written on: 26/10/2012

I have held insurance with Saga for many years and until this year had nothing but praise for them. Sadly, the service and attitude of staff has gone downhill of late. In April this year I was looking to buy a car and asked Saga for a quote. After a couple of days to'ing and fro'ing they gave me a price for road use and off I went looking for the right car. Having found it I rang Saga to take up the quote and was then told they would not insure the car. I had to put the purchase on hold... (read more)

If I could give 0 stars out of 5 I would!! Used a comparison website, SAGA came up cheapest so I chose them (the Policy details looked OK as well). XS was very high - but the car is cheap enough to bin and buy another if the worst happens. Something has happened at SAGA - something really bad - they now seem rotten to the core from the top down!

They enjoyed a good reputation - not now. I see that today they have been slated by Customers for their terrible attitude to Customers - even MP's have said they may raise the issue in Parliment!!!

I would advise everyone to avoid SAGA - they are a very small shadow of their old self!

If anyone in SAGA is reading this - DO SOMETHING TO STOP THEM!

“THE MOST INEFFICIENT ADMIN SYSTEM”

Written on: 06/09/2012 by doober

i deal with my mother-in-law's car insurance and pay for it on her behalf. The Saga renewal quote for 2012-2013 had increased by over £100 so I shopped around and found lots cheaper. On phoning Saga 14 days before renewal date to find out why so expensive, I was told they would match a quote I had found with Sainsburys for £150 less than theirs. I was encouraged to make payment in that phone call, but I said I would call back as didnt want to pay until actually due and was assured this... (read more)

Mandl1's Response to doober's Review

Written on: 19/09/2012

We only escaped this treatment because my husband had changed his credit card. We too were totally shocked that they had kept credit card details to renew 'automatically'. When I took this up, I was told that it was because we had renewed on line and must have 'ticked the wrong box'. This was rubbish and we always pay our insurance upfront with one annual payment to avoid problems of continuous authority. When I eventually spoke to a manager, he informed me that after my husband had supplied his credit card details and made the payment over the phone we would have been told that it is the policy of Saga to automatically renew. My husband refutes this and note, even if it were true, why would a company tell you about something that was a condition of accepting the insurance only after you have paid? In my opinion this is, at best, desperation marketing and sharp practice and at worst, down right dishonest. If Saga have to resort to trying to retain customers by this method they do not have much to offer customers in the first place.

We have had several Saga insurance policies over the last few years, though have never made a claim. Have noticed, however, that they increase the excess without telling you and if you complain you are told that it is up to you to check the renewal. Why should we have to check whether or not they have quietly changed something when it is meant to be a RENEWAL of what you previously had? “Rip Off No Claims Bonus”

Written on: 19/07/2012 by chrisd2

If you have a healthy no claims bonus, DO NOT repeat DO NOT insure with Saga. The maximum NCB they will pass on to your new insurer is 8 years! I had an NCB history in excess of 15 years, after insuring with Saga that was reduced to 8 years. As comparison sites ask for 9 years+ to achieve maximum discount you will inevitably incur a surcharge. Their motive is pretty obvious (read more)

Sagas max no claims discount is 60% which is equal to 4 or more years.
If u state maximum no claims when taking a policy, it will be 4 years. If you state how many years you actually have, they will put the correct years. Even if taken online, it will automatically give u maximum 60% = to 4 years. My advice-send in proof of ncd from previous insurer. That way, it gets updated automatically.

“Changed from Direct Line to Saga”

Written on: 07/07/2012

Changed from Direct Line due to their customer service, never updating customer records, failing to do what they had promised and charging for services which they then did not deliver (£9.56 to send a fax of new insurance policy to car dealer which they did not do). Plus the premium on the new car almost doubled, whereas with Saga it decreased. Pity, Direct Line used to be good, they seem to have forgotten how now. Just hope you want to renew with Saga next year as if you don't they'll carry on being efficient and take your money anyway (automatic renewal being a company policy) and be careful that your excess hasn't been cranked up, which is also a very helpful and efficient practice that they do without prior consultation which makes nonsense of a 'renewal'. Please do not be complacent about Saga, wait and see what you think of their customer service if you have an issue, it seems to change once you've paid!

Thank you Mandl. I think DL tried to automatically renew my policy. It must be common practise within the industry these days to keep business ... you are renewed unless you cancel.

Every year I check my policy for this and other policies and go for what I consider to be the best deal around!

In my experience it is not a widespread practice to automatically 'renew' your policy, by retaining your details from a one off payment, it is sharp practice by Saga and I would never take another policy out with them.

The reason for this is probably because like most insurance companies such as LV, Hastings etc. when claiming for an accident when your car is parked it is classed as a fault claim even though its probably not you that caused the damage and with SAGA you are allowed 2 claims in 5 years so unless there was a fault claim reported before that they wouldn't be able to take away your NCD protection

The only way that they will not pay out on an insurance claim is if you have no financial interest in the vehicle. If you are the registered owner and keeper of the car then you will have had no problems. If you are not, then there is no insurable interest.

“Sage Try to Con Extra Money from You ”

Written on: 12/07/2011 by cjcstand

I helped my partner buy Saga insurance online, as it was the cheapest quote. I am very experienced at making these on-line purchases so deliberately unchecked all the extras including legal cover to keep the price the same as the quote before purchasing. The next week she received a demand for an extra £35 for cover. She contacted them and eventually got through to a manager to have the charge removed. In between they tried all sorts of tactics in a very patronising way, suggesting she... (read more)

If you changed your vehicle on the same policy then there wouldn't have been a cancellation charge. A £50 cancellation charge is always outlined when you take out a policy and this is only charged for mid term cancellation, in the example you give the cancellation charge would not apply.

I know from experience, that when you purchase any policy from Saga, right at the end before they take the money, they always read aloud some terms and conditions about cancellation fees and adjustment fees - If you had purchased another vehicle and simply wished to transfer the details onto your new car, then the cancellation fee would not have applied

If it was just a change of vehicle there would have been an admin charge of £12 this is standard practice for insurance companies and the cancelation charge is £50 but all of SAGA's agents under FSA guidelines must state these admin fees before you agree to pay

Written on: 04/03/2011

I had this reasonabley priced Saga car insurance for one year and, because I was going to be abroad when the policy expired I phoned around for quotes.I phoned Saga to ask them what their renewal cost would be and discovered it was nearly £100 more than the previous year. I asked them if they could match the price of the quotes I had been given; when they said they could not I told them not to renew my policy and I bought another one. On my return from abroad I discovered they had renewed... (read more)

Although payment had been taken and it is wrong, it is very easy to solve. As it is illegal to have two insurances running at the same time on one vehicle you need to send Saga proof of your insurance with the other company, they will have no choice but to backdate the cancellation and offer you a full refund.

Continuous Authority is a common practice in lots of financial institutions, not just insurance, with saga, upon making any payment with a valid method of payment, they will tell you that you can automatically have your policy renewed using the same card details.. it is then up to us as customers to opt-out..

Written on: 17/02/2011

Premium increase of 40% this year! I am a 62 year old lady driver, driving for 44 years without an accident or claim. I decided to try Saga car insurance and got a fully comprehensive quote for £157.55. This year they sent a renewal for £237 - almost £80 more. When I called to query this huge increase they said the first year was an introductory offer and they'd had a lot of claims last year. As they insure people over 50 I find this somewhat surprising as our age group are considered the... (read more)

I found this review very helpful because...I am insured with Churchill and my premium has gone up from £226.80 to £321.18 Therefore I have shopped around and Saga have quoted £250.82. I was quite prepared to switch to Saga. However I am glad I checked out this website first,I can't believe the long list of stories of appalling customer service from Saga, I have changed my mind. I am sorry for all of you who have found out the hard way why SAGA are cheap and thank you all for your reviews. I am going to stick with Churchill, their service was second to none last year when someone drove into me.

There is a general misconception that us 'oldies' are more cautious and careful drivers compared to the younger road user. Sure many insurance industry claims are made by new reckless drivers but consider how many are made from the opposite end of the scale - minor bumps in shopping car parks when us over 50's reflex's aren't what they used to be, however hard it is to admit that. Saga have increased their renewal prices just like EVERY insurance company has this year, reason for cheaper prices elsewhere are the introductory price you refer to but i am sure you will find that out upon next years renewal.

Saga are OK until you have a claim. Dont count on their help, you have to do it all yourself! I eventually, after months of stress and sleepless nights, won my claim - no thanks to Saga. Had to renew with them again as my claim was still pending. Once renewed, amazingly my claim was settled! Wasnt happy! (read more)

Over the years, my premium has crept up. This year it has gone up over £100. No explanation given by SAGA. Prices have not gone up that much, so how do they justify this inflation busting increase? They don't and cannot.
Another reputable company now insure my car for £150 less. (read more)

I was quite satisfied for the first couple of years until this years premium shot up by over £100, I've been driving for forty years and never ever claimed, when I phoned them they said it's because I live in an area that has made many claims,(how would anyone know if they are telling you the truth or not)I'd say it's just another way of robbing ordinary decent people. I agree with one of the reviews claiming only bad experiances are sent. I am currently carrying out comparisons for this years insurance and although I have found cheaper and these are very inviting, past experience with Saga has always been excellent. During the past 4 years I have had a car written off and then the replacement was stolen 4 months later, on both ocassions Saga handled both claims most professionally and fairly and made the processes as painless as possible with what were...
