“Gamo \Walther CP99 - much underestimated!”

Written on: 08/03/2013 by robsamui (1 review written)

Firstly the build-quality of the Gamo Walther CP99 is top-notch - there's not a rattle or creak on it anywhere. For those of you used to the unthinking convenience of semi-autos then it's going to be a pain. The first 2/3 of the trigger pull rotates the magazine and its a long, stiff travel. But it actually takes very little practice to get used to it. Accuracy is an issue. The sights seem to be horribly hard to acquire a consistent target with. But fitting a laser sight, or adding a rail... (read more)

“i was sadly disappointed”

Written on: 24/02/2013

hello sorry to say, but this pistol was a large disappointment for me. the build quality is exemplary, but for over $200 it lacked in everything else. the double action trigger would be fine on a real defensive pistol for the first shot, but with casual plinking, it is absurd. the trigger felt soggy in both single and double, and traveled for two long. it was also not smooth. real hard to shoot with. the wighting of it was uncomfortable, and grouping was saddening. mag failed to seat nicely... Well after owning many Co2 pistols, I have to say this one fits my hand perfectly, It has a nice light weight to it compared to the beretta 92f and the walther cp88 which i think are pretty heavy to hold, The only down side to this pistol is the double action, Its very heavy compared to the 92f or the cp88, however pull the slide back and the single action is nice. And as for accuracy. Dont expect to much. but practice makes perfect. and i can get a good 2 inch group at 15m, exspect the... (read more)

not very powerful, but looks the part its no good for pest control and only reasonably accurate for close up target shooting big thing is it looks like a real gun , i traded mine in against a crossman 2240 pistol which for me is much more powerful and also .22 and gives more shots per CO2. its down to your choice its not a bad product but i found the crossman better for my needs. Looks great and handles like a 'real' gun. Accuracy ? Thought I was an ok shot but can't get good grouping whatever ammo I use - ok for tin cans though. Make sure you seat the pellets into the magazine properly or you'll get misfires a plenty !! Don't want to sound too negative because despite it's faults, I really like this pistol - under 2 seconds to empty the mag is such a stress buster - buy one !!!!!!!!!!! (read more)

I acquired my CP99 a few weeks ago and have been very happy with it. Very compact; but with a nice heft and weight to it; SA and DA trigger is fine once used to it. Accuracy is good for the 3.3" rifled barrel; added red laser accessory fits very nicely and adds both fun and added accuracy. Used standard Umarex 8 round metal mags - dependable and reliable - get extras!

The cp99 is a fantastic air pistol it is perfect for recreational use and is great fun to show off to your mates the gun is great at single action firing but i don't recommend using the double action firing as although i may look, sound and feel cool you loose alot of your accuracy. the accuracy is very good (for an air pistol) considering all co2 pistol are not very good for accuracy as they are usually based on pistols used by the police and are not needed for shooting targets but people!... Hey guys I'm just writing this review because last year I bought the Walther CP99 it is a very comfortable gun to shoot and hold. It has the curves in the grip which make it very hard to slip away from hands which makes it good for accuracy. I also bought a silencer and the laser. The laser can easily work very well over 15 metres with a very bright red. My Walther CP99 looks good, is well built and works well and is reasonable powerful, accurate and fun to use. It's easy to get spares, pellets, CO2, etc. with shops providing attachments, laser dot, scopes, etc. It would be nice if the current problems with gun culture would allow us plinkers to shoot without possible nightmares occurring.

Great weapon, realistic and accurate. Good for both fun shooting and target practice would recommend to both experienced marksmen and novice shooters. Feels real, very accurate, great for general target shooting. Fits nicely into most holsters with little to no movement. The rear of the grip can be changed to better fit the hand of the user. this makes for much better overall feel and accuracy. 8 rebound rotary clip can run out very rapidly and reloading the clips is time consuming (read more)

Try each one first .The CP99 is good for posing. It is safe in that you can remove both pellet clip and the gas cartridge when you put it away.
<br/>
<br/>However Double action is stiff and creepy with no defined let off point. Single action is nearly as bad - you cock it by pulling back the slide, which is usually very stiff. The decocking lever a good safety feature- requires considerable force. Magazine release catch does work well !
<br/>
<br/>The other pistol has fewer features ,soft plastic magazines which wear easily and an equally bad trigger. Go and try the triggers on Colt 1911, S and W Revolver or Beretta 92 at your local gunshop to get an idea of what a Umarex trigger should be like

The reason your gun is jamming is because you're using lead BBs, this is a pellet gun for use with .177 pellets only.
<br/>try the correct pellets made by a decent brand like crossman and see if this improves the functioning. i would also recommend some pellet lube for increased accuracy and velocity. : )

Just a really nice airpistol. Easy to load the mag and unload. The way the mag is set up with magnets to hold the next 3 to 4 shots in battery plus the spring pressure there is no way you could pull the trigger fast enough to jam this up.

This is my second review and now I have been using the Walther CP99 for about 6 months and fired off about 10,000 pellets, it just gets better and more accurate. Any initial stiffness has worn off and the earlier jams are a thing of the past, as it has worn in and I've used quality air-gun oil. I get 80+ shots from one CO2 cartridge even on fairly rapid fire. The dedicated Walther laser sight is well worth getting, as it fits neatly on the rail under the muzzle. The only problem is it makes... (read more)

I have used one of these Chinese/Japanese copies and they are OK with a lighter trigger than Umarex- Walther, but the CO2 valve is poor quality. I had three replacements before I found one that did not leak. When working it seemed to be more powerful than the CP99 - more like the S+W 8 inch revolver. I had a similar experience with the gun shooting very low and to the left. In fact, no two grouping were similar. I returned it for another and it shoots predictable 1.5" groups. I use the laser site and find it to be of great aid in aiming. It works poorly in full sunlight but fine at 10 meters in shade. The trigger pull is heavy and makes shooting at small targets all but impossible.

Unfortunately, I can&#039;t quite make sense of some of the things mentioned in your review...
<br/>Sandbags? Cover the target? What do you mean by this?! But anyway even though I am only a prospective buyer and have barley any experience with co2 guns I am proficient with spring powered pistols and I am very knowledgeable in the field of fire arms and projectile weaponry so I would like to make a point or two... You need to apply some common sense to both your thinking and your handling of this gun, for example you said that you were unimpressed with the grouping, which in all fairness did&#039;nt sound as bad as you made It out to be, but If you wish to improve accuracy perhaps you should take wind speed and direction into account when firing? No offense but this is probably down to you rather than the gun. Another point is that a lot of people have complained about heavy trigger pull when shooting in 2 stage trigger mode, keep in mind that essentially single action shooting is Ideal if you are looking for a bullseye, a high rate of fire is more of a fun added convenience and is not essential, after all remember that for centuries firearms have been primarily used as weapons, and weapons with high rates of fire are relatively new and they are fast because they need to be to eliminate opposition quickly and effectively. My final point and i'm surprised I should even be saying this...you talk of the gun not firing in hot weather, well duh?! Its a Co2 gun, what do you expect,
<br/>The Co2 source is infamous for being temperamental to temperatures... Yet again and I'm sorry to say this because I mean no offense but I honestly think you have no Idea wot your talking about.

Well to start with, I&#039;m a NRA Expert Classified in pistol. I have not been able to reach the Master level yet. I&#039;m also a certified instructor through the 4-H Shooting Sports program for pistol and rifle. The pistol (CP99) was bought to be used in the rapid fire event of the 2006 National 4-H Shooting Sports Competition which my son was one of the four team members. You qualify to be on the team by being one of the 4 top scoring shooters in the State Level matches. Another words not just an anybody.
<br/> MacKaliba wrote "Sandbags? Cover the target? What do you mean by this?!"
<br/>Sandbags were used as a rest to sight in. The groups were low and left which mean to hit the bull you had to aim high and to the right. To do this you had to aim above and to the right of the bull. When you have to aim above the bull you can no longer see the bull. Why, because the muzzle end of the pistol is covering it up. There for you have to Cover The target (bull) in order to hit get the shots to hit it.
<br/> MacKaliba wrote "for example you said that you were unimpressed with the grouping, which in all fairness didn&#039;t sound as bad as you made It out to be,"
<br/>For the amount of money spent on this pistol it should have been better then it was. If you are satisfied with 1.5" to 2" groups at 10 meters (33 feet) then you will be happy, but many of us this find it unacceptable. The company relies on people like you to buy it. The pistols that we use in competition for the slow fire events are MUCH more accurate and for less money.
<br/> MacKaliba wrote "but If you wish to improve accuracy perhaps you should take wind speed and direction into account when firing?"
<br/>Sighting in was done indoors and the rapid fire event was also held indoors.
<br/> MacKaliba wrote "a high rate of fire is more of a fun added convenience and is not essential"
<br/>In rapid fire events held at competitions, it is essential!!
<br/> MacKaliba wrote "you talk of the gun not firing in hot weather, well duh?! Its a Co2 gun, what do you expect"
<br/>When I buy a product, I expect it to work. There were many CO2 pistols there that worked, but all of this model had problems. What are you saying, don&#039;t plan on using this outside unless it is cold?
<br/> dblair wrote "use the laser site and find it to be of great aid in aiming"
<br/>This is true, but any device that is able to project a beam of light onto the target is not allowed. You should not have to put a laser on because the sights installed are not usable. This is a poor design on the manufacture.

I think that it is designed firstly as a realistic replica and secondly as a sporting pistol. Pardon me if I'm wrong, but would&#039;nt a PCP pistol be more Ideal for accuracy and power?

I gotta say, after hearing about your background i think your expectations for a replica CO2 pistol are far too high, this pistol may rate a 2 out of 10 to someone as experienced as you, but in my honest opinion i think you are overlooking the fact that it is not intended to be used the same way competition pistols are, this as far as i am concerned (and most of the other reviewers) is a recreational pistol, and for the price a good one at that. No offence intended, but i think your expectations are WAY too high.

Deer oh Deer (sorry, pathetic gag)
<br/>
<br/>The Walther CP99 is a brilliant entry level c02 pistol. But, the only way you could kill a deer with it, is if you threw it at its head (even then, i would doubt it would cause any severe harm).
<br/>
<br/>I use mine primarily for target practice up to 10 meters, and it certainly performs well. However, i always feel i want more when i fire it. So, if you have the cash........buy yourself a CP88.

Using this pistol to shoot at a deer is both stupid and inhumane, what were you thinking? As the previous comments say, this is only going to be useful for a kill shot, or perhaps two or three, to a small animal or rodent, at ranges far closer than you would shoot deer at, seriosuly come on, deer hunting?

I took it to my local firing range and the second I opened the box everybody wanted to take a look. A beautifully crafted piece of kit it feels and looks great. Look out for high prices. It's possible to get a Walther CP99 for £85 but some are charging up to £140. Noted your comment about "setting the windage". Having had 3 CP99s I have on each had to set the sight to the end of its travel, not on the same side and two other users tell me the same -poor assembly? I like the safety angle of storing the gun without gas or pellets, I ask why Umarex cannot produce a decent trigger action Weihrauch when the cheap chinese Marksman 2004 can!

0.177 BBs (steel) fall out because they are smaller than .177 something like .174. LEAD round shot -Gamo rounds for example are a true .177 and perform very well and are easier and quicker to load in the rotary mags.
<br>"CO2 Pells" which are wadcutter Prometheus but sold by NorthAir or Crosman are solid cores with a self lubricating nylon sabot like sleeve. They put up your muzzle velocity by about 20% and are easy to load (and to find when you drop them as they are yellow !)

Hi, I'm 35 I've bought my Walther CP99 10 months ago, and I'm using it every days I can. After 4000 shots this gun is still in perfect conditions! For me the CP99 is a must in CO2 guns, it's strong, not too heavy, it has a smooth feeling when you take it in your hand.
It could be a little more powerful.

I am 27, and have been into pistols (air or otherwise) for ten years. I would have to sneak airguns into mommys house at the age of 18. I loved them for the quality craftsmanship and the attention to detail. Until now, the most expensive gun I owned was a Crossman 1008. It was nice, but plastic. I didn't really know that air pistols like the Walther CP99 existed untill I went online. I was determined to find the best co2 pistol I could find. Great review, but what makes the nickel slide version better than the blued slide version?
<br>
<br>I thought the CP99 blued, military nickel versions were identical in terms of materials used in the slide, or were you speaking of slide aesthetics? eg. Nickel slide looks nicer than blued.

The nickle version looks very smooth. They are both the same material though, I think. I've never tried to modify the gun. I'd love to get tips though on how to increase velocity. I know that when you mess with the velocity the accuracy goes down, but I want the thing to fire at like 450 fps. That would be nice! Holla back.

I don't have the CP99 gun yet. I am waiting for the weather to warm up first, but I have spent much time reading up on how the internals works, and shooting physics in general.
<br>
<br>I can't think of anything off-hand to make the gun fire at higher FPS, except possibly welding on a tiny brass input tip onto the middle of co2 canister and pumping it to higher than stock psi (900-1000???). But, I would think this would damage the gun over time due to the increased stress.
<br>
<br>To get slighter better accuracy I am going to buy the silencer, if it actually extends the barrel length.

Further research into increasing FPS yields:
<br>
<br>1) The proper pellets can increase FPS (and in some cases accuracy due to higher tolerances): eg: http://www.dlairgun.com/pellets.htm
<br>
<br>"The plastic skirt creates superior air seal and reduces friction in the barrel. They develop approximately 20% higher velocities than typical lead pellets, and they penetrate better than any other pellet available on the market today."
<br>
<br>
<br>2) A longer barrel will give higher FPS: http://pyramydair.com/site/articles/co2/
<br>
<br>"Barrel length determines velocity to a great degree.
<br>In this respect, CO2 acts exactly like black powder. Both need time to do their thing, and the longer the barrel (to the point of diminishing returns), the faster they shoot."

Cool. I will go to the web site to see about ordering those pellets. i know that lighter pellets also improve velocity. The silencer that you were talkin about in your other response does not extend the actual barell length. I think there are two types of muzzle add ons: a compensator and a silencer. The compensator is the add on that actually adds solid length to the barell. The silencer makes it look long, but it is for sound muffling/ supression, not for adding length accuracy or power to the airgun. Please correct me if im wrong. I would love a compensator on my Walther. The gun isn't loud at all so i don't think i want a silencer even though it would look cool. I just want an accessory that will yeild more power. Even if i have to use lighter pellets to get a better result. Holla back

Well I'm glad you like your new 'toy' but some the things you said are not quite true; as far as power and accuracy goes CP99 is actually below the avarage for CO2 pistols; 360 as max fps is not that much considering the avarage is about 120m/s or 393fp. And 3.3in barrel doesn't promise much accuracy wise. Btw the easiest way to increase the velocity is to increase the barrel length...

Furthermore in that little quote that you copy pasted, i said that no gun will look that good and still maintain decent power and accuracy. The gun is by no means match quality but the craftsmanship makes the gun a blast to shoot with. No pun intended. Recommend to me an awsome looking pistol that has very high fps. Yes hotsky, i totally agree. I really want to use a longer barrel length hidden in a silencer. The silencer would be legal here since it is not being used to supress sound.

<br>I am sure i could build a fake silencer to hide the the lengthen barrel with parts from the local home depot plumbing dept (I have see this done by airsofters black painted screw on silencer), but does anyone know where to buy a long rifled inner barrel for the CP 99?

I don't have a CP99, and NO I don't think I'm a bad shot, I guess it all depends on what you consider to be accurate accurate...

As for good looking powerful air-pistols I don't think there are any; more powerful air-pistols aren't replica/look-alike types they are single shot, usually springers that don't look that good and there aren't that many to choose from either... For pest control rifle is a way to go when it comes to air-guns.

hkman, you could probably use the fake silencer that comes with Walther Nighthawk... but I don't think cutting the barrel is the issue here. I'd say fitting is. I think it's possible that a 6 or 8 in S&W barrel might be an exact fit (since CP99 and S&W are both Umarex guns). I was was thinking of doing something like that with my Beretta (I was going to use the compensator to hide the barrel) than I got Crosman 357 6in barrel for quite cheap. Since the actual barrel on the Beretta doesn't go all the way to the muzzle, I was able to add on the 6in barrel to the gun. it 'only' increased the velocity by about 25% but pellet penetration increased by almost 50%.

Which of these two in your experienced opinion do you think is the best? I'm looking for power and accuracy mostly because both have got the looks..Their AWESOME, and no....I can't get both of them...hehehhe

But seriously, out of these two, which would you say would better suit my wants??? From the one you've chosen, how would you compare it with the beretta 92. I am under the impression that the beretta is a little inferior. What do you think??? Thanks alot, Pedrolf

the cpsport is useless according to all of the other reviews. you should read them all and make the decision based on that. it won't be a hard one. i think the cp88 is probably more accurate because of the longer barrell length. in terms of fps ( feet per second) the cp88 is the more powerful of the two, but it does look a little dated. the cp99 is awesome both in accuracy and power for the length of the barrell. i love mine to death. its no match quality by any means but its fun, and by the way there are single shot ultra accurate/powerful guns that are beautiful to look at. do your research hkman.

TO dannyman; neither CP99 or CP Sport will be any more powerful than your Gamo R77. In fact Gamo is rated 380fps IIRC while CP99 360fps max.
>TO pedrolf; Beretta isn't inferior to CP99 or CP88, it is actually more powerful and accitrate than both. Build quality is probably the best too. After all it does cost the most.

Danny IMO the reason why CP99 has the best reviews (and I don\'t mean to offend anyone) is because it\'s a James Bond gun! It\'s not a bad gun, but it\'s not the best one either...

To tell you the truth more power doesn\'t always mean more fun, and doesn\'t mean a better gun. IMO accuracy is way more important. My Beretta shots 410-425 fps for the first few shots and than drops to 390fps range. I don\'t really consider it to be powerful but it\'s definitely not weak. More powerful CO2 multi-shot guns would be S&W and Crosman 357 with 6in and 8in barrels, basically the longer the barrel the higher the fps will be...With a 6in barrel \"add on\" my Beretta shots at 475-500fps.

As I said before; more powerful airguns are usually single shot springers (not CO2). IIRC the most powerful CO2 pistol is a Crosman 2240 (.22cal @ 460fps) which is a cheap but highly customizable single shot pistol. There\'s also bengamin-sheridan EB guns, in the same power range they are better quality but cost more $$. Multi-shot replica type pistols are usually .177 and around 300-450fps.

Danny that is pretty bad...I\'ve heard a lot about inconsistent fps with Gamo R77 pistols. Coke cans are pretty thin, so a gun shooting at 380fps should be able to punch though 3 cans in row... If you bought the gun recently I\'d say exchange it (for something else) or return it.

Crosman 357 has good fps, but it has a LOT of plastic (for what should be a metal gun). Also not sure if you know this; the cylinder doesn\'t swing out like on your R77 it\'s a brake barrel which in my opinion is drawback.

yes I know, but I dont longer care about those things, when I first had bought the r-77 I was astonished by the realistic features, but its really frustrating not to be able to penetrate a plastic bottle. but I know there is two different crosman 357, the old model with a plastic "wooden" grip, and the new one with a black plastic grip. Do u know something about this? in that case is there any differences in power between these two generally speaking?

IIRC before 1996 crosman 357 was all metal, now they only make an all plastic 357 models. The power should be the same though.
Now, you said plastic bottle? When I earlier said it should shoot through 3 cans I meant soft aluminium coke cans. Those clear plastic water bottels have a lot of \'give\' and are a bit harder to penetrate, usually the pellet will \'slide\' off sideways or bounse off.
btw you might want to cheack out S&W 586/686 they are very good guns.

Hi Folks,
I read all these comments, very interesting and entertaining. I have a few CO2 guns so that's all I know. But I have CP99s (black and silver), a CP88 and a couple of Crosman C40s. Here are a few comments related to this string of messages:
1) Finish durability: CP99 silver is better than CP99 black because these guns are painted pot metal (not "blued" or "nickel"). The black Umarex paint scratches/rubs off if you are not careful whereas the silver holds up. And yes the silver looks sweet.
2) As mentioned I have 2 CP99s -- one shoots hard, as hard as the C40 (they have vastly different reported velocities..makes you wonder about those published numbers); one shoots very average as far as power. My opinion is, comparing the CP99, C40 and CP88, you'd be hard pressed to realize an actual velocity difference. I use really light pellets (Daisy lead free @ 5.2 grains...don't want my kids getting near lead...I shoot in the basement), and the CP99s respond well to the lighter pellet. Maybe the Daisy pellets put the C40 at a disadvantage. Anyway, I'm sure the average CP99 is a little less powerful than a C40 or CP88, but you really don't notice the difference. Also, the Umarex guns seem to hold their velocity constant for many more shots than the Crosmans -- after a while, the Crosman shoots much lower velocity.
3) I don't care about James Bond. But the CP99 is a clever design that is durable, effective and good looking. very high quality.
4) Accuracy of the CP99 is funny -- it is short and initially it is easy to jerk it slightly and shoot off the mark. But for some reason it has developed into my most accurate gun -- for whatever reason. It is very consistent, as far as the sights and trigger pull. Put a red dot on it and it is hard to miss, at least under 30 feet.
5) One huge advantage of the CP99 over all other guns is the valve being located in the magazine. The magazine runs about $30 US IIRC, and if your valve/seal breaks, just get a new magazine then fix the original for a spare. With the CP88, for example, the gun is unuseable if blow a seal or valve. The modular approach is much better.
So, overall, I would recommend the silver CP99 over must guns of this type. They are accurate, power is OK and virtually the same as other CO2 guns of this class, construction is top-notch, and the most important working parts are modular for easy replacement.

Yes it looks a little crazy, and like something out of a james bond movie when fitted, but all you hear is the crack of the hammer hitting the co2 chamber. Which means i can use my pistol in my back yard without the neighbours phoning the police for gunshots going off lol.

I have only used mine for mainly target shooting, but I have managed to kill well over a dozen Rats with it, at upto 50ft.
<br/>So for close up, yes this is gun is brilliant, but for over 50ft, I would suggest you use your rifle.
<br/>I have read the Walther CP99 is approx 360ft/sec - 420ft/sec. This will be plenty powerful enough for what you need. This is my 4th pistol, and the most powerful I have used.

What can I say?
The Walther CP99 CO2 Pistol stands head and shoulders above any other CO2 pistol. I know. All I can do is highly recommend it. I cannot knock this pistol in any way. (read more)

My Walther CP99 CO2 pistol came in a nice plastic case with two 8 round mags, and one additional back strap. Was zeroed in and very accurate out of the box. Equally accurate using Beeman coated wadcutters, and Crossman domed .177 pellets. The only negative is the amount of force needed to discharge this weapon both in S/A and D/A. If trigger pull could be appropriately reduced I would give it a 10. I would pay more for this pistol if they added a far lighter trigger. (read more)

“I read all the preceding reviews on the Walther CP99...”

I read all the preceding reviews on the Walther CP99 CO2 pistol, and I agree with most points. I have a Gamo PR45 (owned for over 12 years), and today I bought a new Desert Eagle blow back, which I will also review later.

The CP99 has the look of a James Bond gadget, but lacks the accuracy unless you are James Bond of course. I would say the gun is good but not excellent. If you are reviewing this with a view to a purchase, go for it. It's not perfect but it works constantly well with... (read more)

Many people claim the Walther CP99 is not very powerful or accurate but I don't find this a problem.
I find I can get a grouping of about 3/4 inch from 10 metres. I think this is intended to be a replica rather than a sporting pistol and it does the former very well with enough of the latter to hold it's own at the range.
I have also fitted a laser which is easy to do and can be removed and refitted in a second. the laser is also easily calibrated by two grub screws.

I am also interested in... (read more)

“Got mine for $77 delivered from PyramydAir.com. ...”

Got mine for $77 delivered from PyramydAir.com. Slightly smaller and thinner version of the CP99 and Sport versions but has some definite advantages.

Tips the scales (my scales) at roughly 26 ounces without BB and gas cartridge, about 28 ounces loaded. Solid metal construction on the top with the usual plastic composite on the bottom. Fit and finish is just as good as the German made handguns (these guns are made in Japan). Unlike some other Crosman guns, these are not made by Umarex... (read more)

I think that's the now CP99 COMPACT not the CP99! I’m sure that’s the one, since the CP99 doesn’t use bbs and it’s takes 8 shot mags. also it is an Umarex gun... btw the PPK is also made in Japen.
<br>
<br>I got to say 2in from bench rest is not that great…I can easily get 1-2 in with my Beretta offhand, bb guns are just less accurate...

For some reason, this review did NOT get sent to the proper area. This is a review for the Walther CP99 Compact, not the standard model.

<br>Trying to see if I can get this corrected and sent to the proper area.
