ok so i got my banshee x sometime last year now and well ive still got it its a nice bike rides well all components on the bike are of a good standard and realy do hold up to the beating i give my bike. i love my bommer 55rs that came on the bike that 140ml fork isnt just there for show it works a treat. my bike also came with a suntour rear shock. the shock did its job but eventualy broke like all things suntour do. thats down to suntour not halfords. ive now got an 09 verion of the rock... I have had a Carrera banshee for just less than one month now, been on it 3 times. The bike is great but they is a few things I would advise on first, it needs a chain protector as the chain knocks the hell out the frame, next is the one i'm complaining with at halfords as I want a new bike, please let me know what you think;
I was riding my bike as you do third time out on it not a long trip I hit a bump and the rocker that the shocks attatches to piviots, well when they gave me my... (read more)

I watched them pdi my bike and set my shock up to my weaight befor leaving the store;they told me to ride it for a week then bring it back for the cables and other bits retensioning due to the bedding in period.
Defo hit them with the sale of goods act as bike NFFP as not set up for you on PDI.My own bug bare is there was no manual given to me with the sale of the bike so had to trawl the net to get to know how to adjust the suspension!

Where do I start with this bike, first i bought the Carrera banshee. As an avid mountain biker looking to get back into the sport after a two year absence i was assured it was a nice ride and capable. On the first ride i buckled the back wheel which was not made of metal more like jelly, I was merely performing a small stoppie but it squished way out of line, along with the headset playing a lot with the raidon forks which were pants.

Anyhow, halfords said if i pay the difference they would... (read more)

Some of you people cant be looking after you Banshee properly! I'v had my banshee X for 1year now and not had one problem with it. to be fair once i got it from halfords i stripped it and re set everything my self, and locktight on every bolt. i have used it a min of 1ride to 4rides a week at Glentress red/black routes and have not had one problem with any of the mecanicals on the bike.

stuff to do that i found worked:

Takes Light free ride well and absorbs 3 -6 ft drops ok I have recemtly taken it for a 22 mile ride and with some extra pressure in the shocks it road well. If you are in to mountain biking seriously but dont want to pay a heafty price the Carrera Banshee could be a good choice, however I would recommend that you put locktite on the crank bolts as they can somethimes come undone easily
If you are into mountain biking and are looking for something that you can throw down a hill at speed and not have to worry about it, may I suggest looking at something a little more expensive. (read more)

I took it up Snowdon and down the rangers path which gives you both extremes of MTBing. It handled the conditions better than the xc bikes that came with me. Use your gears on those climbs and relax into it on the down hills. Bikes a lot of fun until you can afford to spend £1500 on your next one. (read more)

Ted Maul's Response to HammyHamster's Review

Written on: 27/11/2008

I was unimpressed with Halford's service - they are just box shifters. My original crank and bottom bracket gave up after only 1500 miles; crank would work loose/creak - I'd re-grease, then when that didn't work I applied anti-seize on the next strip down, then PTFE till I could stand the creak no longer. I replaced the useless powerspline BB with a FSA Platinum, at the same time replacing the crank with a Truvative Holzfeller - this seemed to be fine for 3-4 months, then the dreaded creak came back (no loosening of BB this time though).

I have now dumped the Truvativ/ISIS combo and have replaced it with a Shimano Hone Hollowtech with external bearings. After 200+ miles it feels lighter and yet a definitely more rigid feel - I haven't been haunted by any more crank creak (yet?). Perhaps this bike isn't suited to the ISIS setup, as there used to be quite a lot of flex in the BB before - only time will tell I suppose. I've also replaced the chain and rear cassette. I still think this is a great bike, but I do give it a lot of abuse and I think it's the frame that is the expensive part of the purchase price, with the drive-chain taking a hit from the budget end for components.

Disappointed is the word I'd use at this moment in time to describe my experience with the Carrera Banshee X

Ecessive play in the Headset, which after a bit of messing about with managed to correct. Warped front disc. Noisey Crankset.

Returned it to Halfords for repair, recieved a phonecall to say it would now need a new Crank Spocket because they'd knackered the head of the bolt when stripping the Cankset down and would take a few more days longer to rectify.

I'm awaiting with baited... (read more)

Halfords first service is a waste of time; my BB had worked its way loose due to over-spray of paint in the threads and I asked them to tighten it up, then apply threadlock - which they say they would do, but when it came loose again a month later I decided to buy the tools to dismantle it myself and, lo and behold, no threadlock applied. Gets the job done. Won't find a bike for better value or spec for the price. Copes with DH and FR. Ideal for UK trail centres. Goes uphill as well thanks to the lock out on the shock. As for Halfords construction, apart from a gear adjustment (cable stretch) I had no problem. Better than a rival competitor who built my last bike! (read more)

Cheers Scotty! I thought that the Banshee was put together in the same factory in japan as Kona, hense the similar geometry to the Kona Dawg. No matter. Still well happy with bike. Some problems with the bomber 55r's. Chatter, due to the 20mm axle. Its getting sorted though and I'll be ack on the trails soon!

This bike is some serious kit for the price you pay but get a good bike shop to build it for you coz Halfords don't know their behind from their ear!

Great spec for the money but watch out - mine was badly set-up - untightened pivot bolts on the rear suspension arms and aheadset play ! check every nut and bolt before u ride. SRAM 7 Gears jumped a bit due to one or two stiff chain links. chain lub sorted it out. Disk brakes a little tame at first (not as positive as some cantilevers) but I guess will improve. If only for the sake of the cost on parts, get one of Halfords service deals. I owned mine for 2 days and had to have a new chain, and 2 weeks later a new center sprocket on the crank due to the original one bending, both were caused by an incorrect build at the shop (see bad points). Depends on what you want out of the bike as to choose. For the same price (almost) a friend got a hard tail Specialized with a much lighter frame, but with lower grade gears (his are SRAM5s).
