“Poor hydraulic barkes”

★☆☆☆☆

written by JermaineMahoney on 04/10/2016

I purchased this bike 7 weeks ago from Halfords after being told that hydraulic disc brakes were better than mechanical disc brakes which are in turn better than V brakes. No so! These brakes don't stop the bike for around 5 feet whereas the mechanical disc and V brakes on two other bikes I bought at the same time stop dead on the head of a pin immediately. The brakes also sound wrong - like something is shearing/rubbing against something. Halfords tell me that the hydraulic brakes cannot be adjusted to achieve any better performance. So I am stuck with a bike I have ridden twice in 5 weeks because I do not have confidence in the brakes. I have written to Halfords HQ because the local store cannot do anything and so await a response. Anyone else got hydraulic disc issues on any bike and if so what did you do about it?

Good, tough, entry-level single speed bike at a bargain price. I've happily owned mine for 8 months now, and only had a minor problem with rear-wheel bearings which needed tightening, probably due to poor maintenance on my part. You could easily pay tiwce the price and not end up with a worse piece of machinery.

I've done 3000 miles on my Carrera Subway 2 Mens, all commuting and popping to the shops etc. I live near the beach so it gets a lot of salt and sand, which bikes generally hate, so a tough life for it. I've replaced most of the parts that wear out, like drivetrain and gear cables but it's still going well and I'm pretty happy with it.

“Bought the Carrera Subway 2 Mens yesterday after much...”

Bought the Carrera Subway 2 Mens yesterday after much research on the net. I wanted a little more speed on the roads, but still maintain the MTB handlebar style. . . enter the subway 2, road and trail bike.
Like many other reviewers, I wasn't keen on having to buy exclusively from Halfords, mainly due to the fact that its hit and miss as to whether the person serving you knows anything at all about what they are selling you. The guy that served me at New Malden did not even give me the free spanner / alan key kit that they are meant to provide with every bike!! I opted to take it home and build it myself as I have a little experience of twiddling with bikes over the years.
It came in a fairly sturdy box. and was well packed.
Having put it all together without any problems, the first thing that struck me was how well the whole chain and crank and sprocket set up was. Upon spinning the crank around, it was very smooth and has obviously been set up well at the factory.
I have changed the seat for a wider gel type - the seat post suspension is great too.

I have yet to go out and take it for a long ride, but my gut feeling tells me I wont be dissapointed.
I inflated the tyres to 45psi (front) and 55psi (rear).
This bike does look great and looks more expensive than it actually is. It feels very sturdy and solid and I'm sure will turn a few heads when out and about.
I have also fitted a 'U' type solid bike lock (from 'bikehut' ) to the centre down tube. No problems here, it stays out of the way against the rear hub rame, clear of the pedals and stays firm without clattering.
I'll provide another update, once I have had the chance to put it though its paces.

A great hybrid for the value and do not think spec wise their is really anything else comparable. For road use and light tow paths etc it is a delight to ride but anything heavier can be shuddery and uncomfortable so dont be tempted to try. For me this bike has been reliable and other than the earlier afforementioned incident is a solid performing bike. Also comes with Halfords guarantee for frame 15 years and all other components a year which I believe is standard. Well worth the money
