“Avoid at all costs”

Written on: 13/05/2013 by dbanon

Having been unable to get away from Unicom during their 'Roll over Contract days' I am now 1 month away from switching to an alternative supplier, and I cant wait! last month the direct debit payment did not go through due to a late payment of salary into my account. Not only did they charge me £10, but the subsequent bill was increased from an average of £25 to £89! Their explanation is that its 'in the contract, they are entitled to increase call charge rates to a higher tariff... (read more)

If there was a score less than terrible I would give it! Do not go anywhere near this company. The staff are ignorant, threatening, useless, stupid and probably intentionally deceitful. They have so many departments that chase, hassle and threaten you it is untrue. They lie on contracts particularly re termination charges. Dont pay the termination charges because they simply do not tell you the truth when selling the contract - ask them for a copy of the contractual phone call and ask them to... (read more)

“Halved my bill”

My bills for my Telephones were over £300 per quarter for the two lines, now on my 3rd bill from Unicom and for everything including VAT is between £36 and £42 per month. Only had to call them once but having a UK call center makes a world of difference and the call only took less than 5 minutes to get my online account set-up so that i could see who calls me at what time of the day and any missed calls i have when my salon is closed on a sunday and monday. A lot of the reps scan the bills and boost your call costs up to get a increase in commission because unicoms early term fee is 30% of the average bill for the remainder of the duration of the contact the jacked up bills increase your cost ask for the bill back the rep took I bet it's not the same one they took

Hi, we have been mis-sold a line from Unicom as well. We are a business and their Sales Rep came to see us and told us we would save loads of money if we moved from BT over to them- Our phone bills have increased from £95 per month to £285 per month- they are a joke and if you complain the staff are ignorant and very un-helpful- Please let me know more information on how we can get them shut down.

hi usual unicom tactics,if they havent fulfilled their obligations they are in breech of contract to you.
i was lucky when they were unable to supply me with broadband as the speed was too slow
then their mobile sim arrived after 4 weeks and took over 3 weeks to change it to my old number ,in the mean time i had put it in an old phone incase it was changed, the whole time i never got a signal went back to bt and sent the sim back ,after a lot of shouting they backed down and cancelled the agreement.
make sure you inform watchdog and ofcom as they both need multiple complaints to take action

We are a business that was cold called by Unicom. As we wanted to get our bills down we had their rep in to our shop. We told him we wanted two phone lines and broadband and gave him a copy of our last BT bill. He said we wouldn't be taken on by Unicom unless they could beat the BT price. He got us to sign a direct debit form so that it would go through quickly if we were accepted and he worked out that the bill would be £63 per month.
Well the bills were double what we had been paying BT and knowhere near £63.00 and we had to get a second contract because they hadn't included broadband - they told us that the rep wasn't authorised to sell broadband - so we cancelled the DD and went back to BT.
We told Unicom that we had been missled by their rep and that the contract was miss sold. They disagreed - suprise suprise! And then sent us a bill for £1,500 for early termination
Cutting a long story short we have now had months of aggressive calls from them and now from a company called Universal Debt Collection who are part of Unicom - all though they deny it on the phone when it's on their website.
They have threatened us with court action, bailifs and with winding up actions against our company. We took legal advice and were told to ignore them but to settle for a reasonable ammount to get shot of them. However in the last two days we have had about 5 calls from Universal Debt Collections and they are now sending letter and telephoning us at home which is very annoying and ridiculous as it is nothing to do with our home phone but our Ltd company.
Avoid them like the plague. They are completely unethical and will try to make your life a misery. We are instructing our solicitor to try and get rid of them.

unicom-complaints

Unicom have been acting this way for years and have many aliases.
One being Universal Debt Collection. Unicom and UDC are one and the same, registered at the same address with the same directors.

I fought Unicom and won. It was only a few hundred quid, unlike some people who are being threatened for thousands, but you have to fight. Don't give up and pay these guys if you believe you are in the right.

Please also check out the link to Ofcom that some of you might find useful regarding automatic rollover of contracts ban.

My friend set up a website dedicated to people that suffer at the hands of Unicom and offers help and advice.
It won't let me add the link to the site, but it's called
Unicom-complaints with a co.uk at the end....:)

I often helped people in the past with problems they were having, even wrote a few letters to Unicom on behalf of people I met on this site, and in my experience, Unicom NEVER follow through on their threats of court action. I am yet to see a court summons or debt collection letter with a genuine court stamp on.

My advice, if you feel you are in the right, then you probably are, do not pay them !

“OFCOM POLICY RE ROLLING CONTRACTS”

Written on: 08/11/2012 by rocketmandlgc (1 review written)

The latest news from OFCOM is that rolling contracts are frowned upon but they have stopped short of banning them. We were recently told by Unicom that they were no longer doing them and that we would receive a call a few days before the contract end date to confirm for another 12 months. having read these reviews however I'm going to bang the three month cancellation letter in anyway just to be on the safe side. My complaints are purely to do with broadband. We have no issues with the... (read more)

Rmj's Response to rocketmandlgc's Review

Written on: 15/11/2012

This is information from the Ofcom web site :-
The sale of new automatically renewable contracts to residential and small business customers will be prohibited from 31 December 2011.

Ofcom will also require communications providers to move all residential and small business customers currently on rollover contracts to alternative deals, and to completely remove rollover contracts from the market by 31 December 2012.

Providers who continue to offer this type of contract to new customers beyond 31 December 2011, or those who continue to have customers on ARCs beyond 31 December 2012 could face enforcement action including a financial penalty of up to ten per cent of turnover.
-------------------------------
Many people believe that Ofcom should have totally banned rolling contracts in Dec 2011 instead of giving providers a further year to phase them out.  It means that providers were legally able to automatically roll over any contracts during 2012 but after 31 Dec 2012, this practice will be banned.  It also means that anyone unfortunate enough to have a 1, 2, 3 or even 5 year contract rolled over during 2012, will be tied into that contract for the duration.

If you type 'Ofcom Rolling Contracts' in Google it will find the Ofcom site or use this link http://ask.ofcom.org.uk/help/services-and-billing/rolloverdef

Was your contract automatically rolled over between 1st Jan 2012 and 31 Dec 2012? If the answer is yes then don't pay them a penny and contact Ofcom, the telecoms regulator who can advise you on what action to take. You can also contact the Ombudsman Services, who resolve disputes between consumers and communications providers and offer advise.

I had recently contacted Ofcom and asked this question:-

'Following the ban of the sale of new rolling contracts from 1st January 2012, were telecoms allowed to continue to automatically roll over existing contracts after that date?'

This was their reply:-

Instead of automatically rolling over existing contracts, Ofcom had ruled that telecoms must first contact customers on existing rolling contracts to offer them an alternative agreement. Ofcom had ruled that rolling contracts should be completely removed from the market by Dec 31st 2012.

Ofcom also told me that if telecoms failed to offer existing customers an alternative deal and had automatically rolled over the contract, the telecom may be in breach of General Condition 9.3.

Ofcom advised that customers who were not offered an alternative agreement and whose contract was automatically rolled over, should first contact their provider quoting General Condition 9.3. If the dispute cannot be resolved, Ofcom advised that the customer then contacts the Ombudsman Services who can take the matter up with the telecom provider.

Ofcom cannot deal with individual complaints but they do record complaints to enable them to monitor telecoms and take action if necessary. They also give good advice and I found them to be very helpful. It would be very worthwhile giving them a call to ask their advice or to lodge a formal complaint.

Making sure we gave 3 months notice and we got to the day before transfer when BT phoned to say that Unicom had cancelled our transfer. Over the last few weeks we had several phone calls and emails trying to get us to cancel or gain termaination fees etc. They we had a phone call to ask us to move the date from Aug 1st to Aug 2nd as it would be... The following day I phoned BT again. Who now made claims that Unicom had cancelled by using Ofcom. Well BT didn't want to write a complaint, or put their claims of fowl play into writting at all. So I phoned Ofcom to find out and they said they never get involved in a individual case such as this. That BT maybe meant BT Out Reach had been contacted by Unicom. That BT staff members did not know enough to make accusations such as these. Me = more confused. At that point I thought it best to ask Unicom for a statement. They were good in their responses and elevated me to someone more senior. Apparently the last time I spoke to Unicom I agreed to change the transfer date to Aug 2nd and this chap at Unicom decided 'He' would also cancell the Aug 1st. But I was also doing this with BT so the new transfer date with BT Out Reach was then cancelled as well. I did state to Unicom that I thought it was my responsibility and not theirs to cancel and rearrange transfer dates etc. But no actual agreement on that matter was made. I now have set up transfer but have to wait until 17th August. I was informed by Unicom that if I hadn't transfered to another company in approx 30 days-( I think longer but haven't got in written down in front of me). Then the automatic 3 year rollover contract would begin again. So we are stressing that we will end up in the contract again. Particularly if the transfer is cancelled. BT have tried to reassure us that this wont happen as we are no longer in a contract with Unicom but are more in limbo.
I was told that we would not have excess call costs incremented that they would stay the same, that we would not have costs relating to termination of contract. We would just pay the same exisisting costs. As you can see the act can be accidental or sinister depending on how you look at it. We shall have to wait and see. I will tell you all on the 18th Aug what happened in the end.

I had exactly the same problem in September when I tried to change to a different provider. Unicom cancelled the transfer the day before it was to transfer. I asked how another company (Unicom) could cancel MY order. They didn’t know!

Now they want £300 termination fee and £200 for overseas calls which should be @ 3p per minute but I think they reckon if a bill is overdue they charge BT’s standard rate so not their special rates. How can they be allowed to do this??

They tell me they have no record of the initial call when their sales staff lied to me about costs to certain numbers.

My advice is to do what I am in the process of doing... Phone them and ask for details of call cost to the likes of 0870 etc numbers. Record the call then keep phoning and ask different staff the same questions.

You will find you get different answers from the different staff you speak to. This proves they don’t know what they are talking about and should be good for evidence if they pursue you for money you don’t owe them.

You can record the call using Pamela for Skype which is a free download. I’ve used it for years but didn’t have it when I initially had dealings with them. Otherwise you can but a digital recorder to connect to the phone line. If you cant legally use the recording for evidence because you didn’t tell the other party you were recording the call then you CAN transcribe from the call by playing it back at a slower speed in windows media player so its easier to type what was said.

Check their terms on this link which I’m sure are not allowed.
Good luck fighting

“A downright dishonest company - someone shut them down!”

Written on: 20/07/2012

I can only echo the other comments on here. Without doubt the worst company I have dealt with ever. 1. My contract was amended after I had signed it so that the average calls figure appeared as £77 / month without either my consent or permission. It took me scanning a copy of the contract I had before they would back down from this figure. 2. You cannot speak to anybody in authority. Ask for a manager and you're told that you can't speak to one. When I asked a call centre operator if I... (read more)

Like many of the others who have written reviews here, I am in the same position. I came out of my current contract not realising that I was 'fixed' into a rolling contract that I had taken out a few years earlier. I changed to a new supplier due to Unicom's prices being so much higher & now they are threatening me with a £500.00 penalty charge for doing do. “Never had any problems with Unicom.”

Written on: 05/07/2012

I have been a Unicom customer for over four years, and I find the service above acceptable. I can understand why some people feel slightly shanghaied into long contracts, but if you read the small print, (which many people nowadays do, as contracts have been around since year X), but it does state if you wish to cancel your contract, you need to give three months notice in writing. I personally don't think this is a) too much to ask, or b) unreasonable if you take the time to read your... (read more)

Hi Mrgroove
I appreciate your reveiw saying you are happy with Unicom...fair enough and good for you !
However, I really needed to reply to your comment about being more careful etc....implying that other's have not been.

Please let me open your eyes a little to Unicom !
A lot (most) of the bad reviews on this site and MANY other sites are due to UNICOM failing them...NOT people being careless.
So whether you spend an entire day reading your contract before you sign up....this does not make you immune to Unicom's practices and aggresive nature.
I personally had a terrible experience with them in which they claimed I owed them several hundreds for leaving. I owed them nothing at all - This was proven.....yet, this is what I was told from a Unicom employee on the phone "Yes, I can see here that you do not owe us any termination fees, yet my boss still told me to ring you and tell you to pay...the only way you are going to get out of the fee is if you DIE!"

I urge you to write another review of your experiences a day or so after you decide to leave Unicom...that is when the trouble inevitably begins !!...

I find that generally, the companies I deal with will honour their word. In my experience, I have found that Unicom’s policies are the exception and not the rule. I am also thankful that my credibility, intelligence and maturity are all intact.

However, it is very advisable for anyone thinking of entering in to an agreement with Unicom to check the contract in detail because of their history and the many hundreds of genuine complaints about them.

You have yet to experience Unicom's strategies if you try and leave them for whatever reason the future might present through no fault of your own such as ill health, insolvency, natural disasters, sale of business, moving home ect. There is always room for compassion, humanity and honesty in business - but not with Unicom

“DON'T LISTEN TO THEM”

Written on: 26/06/2012

I have finally got away from Unicom, but it needed a little help. I did not know until a friend told me Unicom had put up my prices (and everyone else's) without my consent, and the only thing I have to do to move away is tell them I am leaving and do not phone me again. They did all the usual for nearly 12 days solid, calls every day, threats every day and towards the end it got worse, much worse 27 calls in one day and even told my Son what they would do to me. Well done you !!!
Shame on them for talking to your son this way...although this tactic is common with them.
You will get a "court injunction" letter at some point....however if it is not stamped with an official stamp on it, then it is likely (although cannot guarantee) to be a letter from just themselves.
This is also another known tactic.

Personally, I would write to them, their compliance department as I did(recorded post) and clearly state your position, why you are leaving, how disgusted you are at the threats to your son and at 27 calls in a day. Then state the clause 8.1(d)...in the event that they breached their agreement with you, then the contract becomes null and void.
Then just sit back and wait.
With me, I wrote that I insist on written correspondance as the threatening calls were too stressful...then after some weeks, I got a freedom letter, without penalty.

Good luck and good on you for standing your ground.

According to Ofcom, all Automatic Renewals of contract should be informed of to the customer first to give them the option to opt out without Penalty.
In other words, a reminder should be sent to you...they should not just roll over into a new contract without your consent.

Take RMJ's guidance, have a look at Money Saving Expert's forum, Enter Unicom into the search and you will find some helpful advice as to how to complain.
And please send your advice letters recorded delivery to them...otherwise they will go "missing"

I think what Rmj is saying, is if you are genuinly happy with their service, then you are a minority.
Unicom have upset 100's, if not 1000's of people with service failures, aggresive selling, aggressive calls, demands for unfair fees, misselling, and many more dubious practices.

If you are a genuine Unicom customer, I urge you to make the most of your wonderful relationship with them as when you try to leave them, you will almost certainly see another side to them...!
If you are not a genuine Unicom customer and are in fact a Unicom employee, trying to boost ratings, then....oh dear is all I can say !

I have to say Unicom are the worst Company out of nearly 900 from what I am reading on complaint forums.

If they are so great Ph14Eu439Uul's why do they stop you leaving when you tell them you want to leave. Doesn't Ofcom say this against GC24. They then lie to you about other Companies, when in fact their owner was the Countries biggest timeshare crook. Put Unicom and Timeshare into Google. They have also put their prices up without notification and that is against their own terms.

I suggest you are an employee as this happens all the time on these web sites. I pity you for being part of such a lowly moralistic Company who care only about the profit margin.

I warn anybody do not join these as there are many others who you can get great prices and service from without the hassle when you want to cut costs once more.

Lucky you to have had such a positive experience but I can honstly say you are in the minority. I warn anyone thinking of joining unicom to reconsider - this company is a rip off - they will sting you severly when you want to leave - I know of someone who has just been issued with a court summons for £1374 and this person had been with them for 5 years (so much for loyalty eh?). They are billing him for 'expected call charges' for the rest of the contract period (which they say is 1 year) what this means is the call charges they would have expected him to make should he have stayerd in the contract. Pus there is loads of interest, termination fees etc - All in all I say to the person writing this review good luck when you try and go elsewhere for a better deal because believe me there are lots of cheaper/better deals to be had. I URGE EVERYONE TO AVOID UNICOM LIKE THE PLAGUE

Message to all you other customers of Unicom who were promised that your termination fees to your previous supplier would be paid but wasn't, take heed. If Unicom can pay the termination fees for this customer that has left a good review, they can pay it for all the others as well.

Please forgive my cynicism, but I know 1st hand what kind of company this is and I really hope you do not need to write on here in 1 year's time with one star rating and complaints about termination fees !

One word of advice, if you have 12 months to go, and you don't want to stay with them after the 12 months, remember you need to give your notice, in writing, recorded delivery in 9 months from now and not a day later. Good luck

actually they dont want to get the engineers out because it will cost YOU. like all the providers if the fault isnt on the line and its just a fault at your end (computer, filter etc) then BT charge for the callout which like sky, bt, talk talk gets relayed onto your bill. So it is in your best interest the troubleshooting gets done correctly. apart from that my only complaint is the rolling contract situation which thankfully now offcom has banned the sale of so no more landline phone companys can sell them but that doesnt help me as i signed my rolling contract 2 years ago when they were legaly binding :(

It is now the 5th May and my connection to the internet has still not been fixed! I couldn't do the wages for the business because my connection would not let me download the figures, I have been very inconveniently back and to the business premises constantly to complete 4 or more of the same tests to appease Unicom's tech department as my case has been handed over to several different people without previous information being passed onto them. Unicom opened another file on the same case so confusing the matter further, they then deleted the first case thus making it seem as if the case had not been open as long as it had been. Although the personnel I have spoken to have always been courteous and pleasant nothing has really been done to further any resolution to our internet page problem so all I can say is that Unicom have given us an appaulling service overall. Unicom have finally resolved the problem (we have been down for just over a month. The problem was apparently with a card in their terminal, whilst I was very happy with the people I spoke to over the telephone Rafin and Andy in particular I think the time it took the engineers to resolve the issue was too long for any business and that is my main complaint. I have asked for my bill to be reduced by the internet amount for the time I was down (1 month at around £32) especially as they insisted on my getting my system checked out (router and filter) which cost me money to do before they got the engineers to check their end. On requesting this I was told they might not do so ? Anyway, all is now back to normal albeit after a harassing time for me!

So you tell them to stop calling - big mistake, they have fun by everyone in the call centre calling you one after another, they make dummy enquiries for quotes, make up false names and pretend they want to order off you, I've been yelled at down the phone, I've been called all sorts of rude disgusting names.
Time will tell, surely a company that is thought of so badly by so many can't keep going?

Why can't we talk to OpenReach and get it sorted. We too are struggling to get out of a "rolling contract" but have got some sensible cancellation charges from them at last. Keep plugging away, the first letters they... (read more)

“Verbal Contract with Unicom”

Written on: 18/04/2012

We've had a business supply from Unicom which one of my colleagues apparently committed to (verbally only) 5 years ago. They now want £4977.12 to terminate!!!! There's no paperwork to prove their so called 3-year rolling contract. They are a nasty, aggressive company to deal with who issue false legal threats when you call their bluff. DO NOT DEAL WITH THEM is my advice. (read more)

I really hope you are going to fight this and not pay !
Have they given you a breakdown of this ridiculous figure?
According to Ofcom, Termination Fees not only "must be reasonable", they must also be outlined and detailed so you know exactly how they came to this amount.
It is not enforceable unless they do this.
If it's verbal then you can insist on the recording - If they fail to provide this, then they CANNOT hold you to it at all !
Rolling contracts cannot be more than 12 months at a time and you must be sent a "reminder" that it is due with an option to "opt Out"
Please reply to this if you want more information from me.

I am a past "victim" I managed to obtain a lot of info in the fight to get out of my fee.

Hi, I am having a terrible time at the moment. I have a home phone which they added onto my business account. The business terminated over a year ago. I have switched provider and been hit with a £1033 termination fee. I have no paperwork agreement for this apparent account, and am now being threatened with court!
WHAT CAN I DO PLEASE?

Geckogirl - hi I am having real problems with Unicom and there underhand sales techniques. I'd love to know more about your experiences. I really feel Ofcom need to investigate this company thoroughly. Maybe BBC watchdog need to do some undercover work to find out what there sales teams are told to do!

I own a small business and i work on my own as i can't afford staff. I have had my rented shop for 3 years coming up and i used to be with xln until last october when i had a visit from a unicom rep, i was so busy i found it hard to speak to her and she was talking all the time about how 'fantastic' unicom are and she said we will give you this that and the other, we are better than anyone else. She was making quiet calls to someone i don't know about then she was so persistent and was... (read more)

As you are a small business owner, i recommend that you write to your Local MP - contact them asap and tell them what this company has done to you. You were mis sold, which is a completely illegal practice. If the woman told you that you could cancel, then this should have been accepted. I think the cooling off period is 7 days. You said you emailed after a few (how many?)
I also would write a STERN letter to Unicom stating that you cancelled Well within the cooling off period and they Must have honoured this.

Also, when you wrote and faxed for them to pay this bill, did you send it recorded and did you keep the fax acknowledgements?

I would email or write to Unicom, inform them that you are contacting (or have contacted) MP, Watchdog and Ofcom, tell them that they were wrong to have not let you cancel, they were wrong to have signed you up for 3 years without telling you it was for that long.
Insist that they CANCEL your service with no penalties and settle the bill with XLN (Did XLN give you a decent breakdown of their termination fee?)

If you want to talk to me in more detail, reply to this and I will give you my details.
I'm not an expert, just a past victim of Unicom, along with many others.
