Good Points: Gripping from the start.

Bad Points: Mightily disturbing so not for the feint hearted.

General comments: Battle Royale is the story of a bunch of Japanese high school kids that are shipped off to an island for a survival of the fittest style contest that has been instituted as a means of coping with a rise in youth crime. The main aim of the game (albeit a sick one) is to take everyone out until you are the last survivor.. cue mass violence, a stream of disturbing killings and plenty of moments that will haunt you for long after the film has finished.

This is an uncomfortable, Lord Of The Flies style exploration of human instinct that raises the question of what you as a viewer would do in a similar situation. As we get glimpses of the characters backgrounds, relationships and daily grind; there is more than a slight touch of realism which at times will make even hardened horror fans squirm in their seats. Warning: prepare to be shocked, amused, upset and made uncomfortable - but this film is one not to forget in a hurry, and for me this is what makes it a cut above.

Outstanding.
