General comments: Best Bike I have ever owned. BMW R1200GS is a good all rounder.

My BMW 1200gs is coming up for 3 years old and I have done nearly 30000 miles. Cant fault the handling during traffic and touring, the tyres have lasted 12000 front and back and I'm on my second set. It has superb low speed handling and is comfortable at 80 along the motorways, can keep up with the majority of sports boys.

I've owned my R1200S over a yr and put 14,000 km's on the bike. I replaced the clip on bars with Heli Bar's they raise the bar's just enough to make long distance more comfortable. And added a touring windshield and throttle control from Twisted Throttle. Also has the factory saddle bags which are great.
All said, I'm very pleased with my purchase.. Nice powerband has load's of bottom end torque, standard suspension works fine a little soft on the front end over large bump's. Easily able ...

The ABS coupled front/rear brakes really inspire confidence in all weather conditions. Excellent riding position. The low slung twin cylinders keep the centre of gravity really low and allow the bike to be ridden hard. Terrific engine torque makes this bike easy to ride whatever the terrain.
The bike is well constructed and seems to resist the weather well. With the fuel tank modifiication (a small hole drilled in the filler tube) I can easily get a range of 200 miles. I love the bike and will c ...

I use my R1200GS to commute (filtering through traffic jams) touring and fun rides. Excellent all round all road bike. A good bike to me and I really don't know what other bike to buy.

Stepped onto a BMW R1200GS of these from a 600 Bandit - what a revelation. So much easier, more comfortable and I never expected the 25% fuel economy benefit. It was love at first sight. One year on, with another 8,000 miles on it, it has not provided me with any cause for complaint. The rear tyre will need changing before the end of the summer (which will make it 9k miles for the set) and I could do with a slightly larger screen, although I am not a particularly large man. Vario panniers are ...

This is the second BMW R1200GS I have owned and it leaves the sports bikes on the twisty roads. May not have a huge top speed but its fun to ride and doe's everthing it says it can.

The BMW R1200GS is a great bike when its behaving itself but out of all the bikes I've owned this has been the most trouble, but having had major back surgery I find I can ride it OK, I do ride just about every day so maybe thats the problem, also for off road jaunts its good but a tad heavy, anyway I hope this is helpful.

Why don't BMW replace all its torx screws with stainless steel Allen bolts (or Torx) that won't corrode? At these prices it's a dissappointment. Especially as they are billed as the go anywhere do anything machine. The inevitable chips on the bike frame from standard road use are already rusting - now trying to fend it off with ACF-50 product and grease on all bolts. Too little too late.
In my view too much was taken off the bike to achieve the initial weight saving of 30 odd kilograms. What was ...

Bought adventure new in Aug 2006, well worth the 3 month wait. First service, dealer (Perth) overfilled oil by approx half a litre (out of the top of the sight glass). Drained oil myself and advised them not happy. Next service at 10k exactly the same happened, dealer couldn't explain why it had happened again. 20k service done in Adelaide on way to Australian MotoGP, no problems with overfilling. 24,000 kms, final drive failed, replaced under warranty. Rear disc warped, fog lamp switch won't ...

The BMW 1200GS is a cracking machine. It's a versatile, capable bike that provides many a nirvana moment. It's also as reliable, well built and potentially very expensive. Bought first bike in December 2004. Suffered multiple gearbox failures, electrical failures, battery failures (etc, etc, etc). Average distance between breakdowns under 1,000 miles. After gearbox number 3 imploded on the M4 less than 300 miles after installation BMW finally appreciated that this might have been a bit of a "fri ...

I'm on my second BMW R1200. The first lasted 14 months an did 20k miles. That bike was such a dog in terms of reliability that BMW and the dealership agreed to do me a good deal on a replacement. The second 12GS has done 37k miles in in two years... the front engine casing has been replaced three times due to corrosion (under warranty). The engine/gearbox has been replaced twice... it's now just out of warranty and has blown for the third time. The dealership quoted £1000 to do the work!

For far less money I could have had a Japanese competitor but with a "few" adjustments to the GS it drives far better then say the Suzuki Vstrom DL1000 or the KTM 990.
It has stunning design features and it's a nice piece of computer aided engineering. Think of the CANLI system, the single cable wiring and diagnostic computer system.
The engine runs far smoother than its predecessor, the R1150GS. This is because of the balancer in the engine. And the much better injection and valvesystem.
    The ...

The BMW R1200GS is an all-round fantastic bike. Feels like a bike used to, handles like it's on rails. I took mine through the Alps last summer and she was great fun. There is a problem with wind buffeting with these bikes, and there are whole websites dedicated to the problem. I partially cured the problem with a taller screen (ironically it works best in the lowest position) and things called "winglets". It's not the fastest bike I've ever owned, but amazingly it is the quickest! I've been out ...
