I have found the Ford Mondeo ST200 Estate to be one of the best cars I have ever owned, and I have had a few.
This is the second one I have had and can say without reservation that for value for money this is a car that is hard to beat.
Prices range from around the sub £1000 mark for one requiring attention to £2000 +.
At the cheaper end of the scale you can expect a high mileage example that will usually need new lower arms, track rod ends, replacement bushes and a replacement...

Previously had a 2.0 GLX before the ST24, on any mondeo that you want performance from you need to upgrade the brakes. They just aint good enough if ya gonna do any kind of speed, especially if you dont have rear discs which I know all ST24 & 200's do.
Other than that, mine's given me no problem except for the flickering headlights which is an easy fix when you know how and the IMRC unit failing. Easily corrected by restarting the car however to fix you need to strip the plenom chamber...

On long drives the Ford Mondeo ST200 is very good on fuel. It sounds amazing and is very quick. The recaro seats are very nice better with half lether though. A big boot. So at the end of the day it is a very fast family car wich can converted in to 4 wheel drive so even quicker acceleration.

Theres no doubt Ford actually got it bang on with the Ford Mondeo ST200. It has enough oomph, it has enough road presence without ever looking lairy or alternatively, faceless. It corners so well you have to check your still in a ton and a half of Mondeo.
It's smooth and refined but then barks a lovely V6 roar at you once you put your toe down.

They only came in blue and white, the latter being supplied to police forces, which in my opinion are best avoided. ST24 in NOT the same as the ST200. As for chav car you are joking the ST200 has not been taken to halfords for a few meaningless spoilers. Maybe you should stick to the little saxo's etc.
Written on: 01/08/2006
Unfortunately when I past my test the only thing i could afford to get insured on was a saxo! that was a great little car for 2 years and never once broke down! as soon as i get a FORD, I had problems! And unlike many other saxo drivers, my saxo was completely standard. Perhaps you haven't driven proper sports cars, I recommend it, not just a sporty family car! I have driven a ST200 and there's not much differnce to the ST24, just has a lil bit more power. which isn't very noticeable! I now have a 52 plate Celica. Much better :-)
Written on: 01/08/2006
Ummmm Celica maybe not, somehow this is not exactly a sports car. Yes i have driven many sports cars and the 200 driven properly, will reward a driver, obviously you were not able to enjoy what the car could do.

A fair review, each to his own etc. I drive an MR2 (aw11), which in fairness makes a better noise, but my friend has an ST24 and it so much more refined. He has scared the nuts off me a couple of times topping 130 mph. It may not have the looks or appeal of a true sports car, but it certainly is a true drivers car and should not be overlooked easily.

The ST200 is a very rewarding car to own and drive. The ST200 is a reliable and easy car to own. Fuel consumption is not too bad, and it faired well as far as Mr Clarkson is concerned when tested on Top Gear. There are limited mods you can do to the car, but the best one so far is to put an ST220 engine in, and this can increase the power up to 270bhp.

This Ford Mondeo ST200 is an excellent car, it's comfy quick and good looking. Trouble is the brakes are not enough for the weight of the car, they really let it down. I'm going to fit some cross drilled ones to try and keep them cooler.
I also think that for a car of this weight 200bhp is enough, but not 'amazing' it could easily cope with more power.
But it is an excellent well balanced car, it certainly attracts a lot of attention for a 'mundano'

"Garage stripped and re-built. Ended up with a second hand unit - still garbage"
<br>
<br>If the garage re-built, why did you need a second hand unit?
Written on: 19/07/2005
In reply to ‘Aytonkid’
<br>
<br>Firstly, I said (and I quote):-
<br>
<br>‘If you HAVE been driving it like a nutter for the last 18 months no wonder the engine blew up, 100,000 miles is good if you have been driving it like most ST drivers drive, to the limit!’
<br>
<br>I did not say that you ‘HAD’ been driving it like a nutter; learn how to understand the English language before you comment!
<br>
<br>Secondly, I have no anger to point at anyone, don’t judge me either also I would hate to have to waste my time doing jury service and would gladly go out and get myself arrested for something silly just to get out of it, as would a lot of other people.
<br>
<br>The Mondeo ST200 is a wonderful car and it’s funny how the other five people who have written reviews on it and the three people who have commented on yours and the other guy who made a comment on one of the other reviews all LOVED the car. Maybe it’s you who got ripped off by buying a bad one, how many miles had it clocked up when you bought it? And did the previous owners drive it like complete nutters and not look after it?
<br>
<br>It’s a shame that you have a low opinion on such a wonderful car and if you are scrapping it I will gladly take it off your hands and give it all the love and attention it deserves.
<br>
<br>By the way, what colour is it?
Written on: 19/07/2005
Quote: "I would willingly sell my house and all it's contents to help the Ford Motor Company." Really? Then that shows your stupid mentality! I'm sure I wouldn't put myself out of a home to buy a Ford! Enough said about you my friend!
Written on: 20/07/2005
Aytonkid - if you were more than about 12 you realise my 'house and contents' was an adapted quote from a classic comedy sketch.
<br>
<br>Even if you didn't, unfortunately you are not bright enough to spot a joke when one slaps you in face.
<br>
<br>Obviously no-one would actually sell there house etc. etc. derrrrrrr
<br>
<br>Anyway, YOU are the ONLY one who doesn't like this car, so I think that says more about YOU than the car.
Written on: 20/07/2005
You never answered the question -
<br>"If the garage re-built, why did you need a second hand unit? "
<br>
<br>Is the garage rubbish or are you making it up?
Written on: 20/07/2005
The garage re-built the engine as it is out of warranty at my expense, otherwise a new one would have had another fitted. The problem could not be identified so they sourced another second-hand unit, however a short time after the same problem occured. How many times can you be without your car and having new engines put in? Where do you draw the line?
<br>
<br>Anyway, isn't this a review on cars and not the owner?
<br>
<br>getaway: You are very condescending individual and very judgemental. Why do you feel the need to belittle me and equate me to a child? You seem very agitated demanding an instant response to the engine question:
<br>
<br>You never answered the question -
<br>"If the garage re-built, why did you need a second hand unit? "
<br>Is the garage rubbish or are you making it up?
<br>
<br>I think that speaks volumes about YOUR personalilty. You an an angry man and you need vent your aggression somewhere else.
<br>If you don't want to comment about the car, don't comment at all and stop posting defamatory comments on this good forum. I have simply commented on the car I owned and you seem to want to point anger at me. "I" had the experience with the car - not "you". If you disagree with my comments thats fair enough but don't make comments about me. I had a bad experience with the car and I have the right to tell others of my experience. You do not, however have the right to insult me. Remember this is a "car review forum", not an "bitching the person who submitted a review forum" (or did you not know that??). Take your bitching elsewhere and keep this forum what it should be - about product reviews.
<br>
<br>And yes, I am the only one who does not like this car. I fail to understand your logic that just because I have my own individual opinion that I muist be wrong? Why does that say so much about "me"? Please explain? Must I agree with all of your comments? Am I not allowed an opinion? Was this forum created for different opinions? If everyone had the same opinion wouldn't it be pointless? Is this a democratic country?
<br>
<br>I reiterate my point, if you get offended by the comments of others just becuase you disagree, press the red cross on your browser and close the page. I am not forcing you to agree with my opinion and I expect you not to force your opinion onto me. This is my last comment on this subject as you are making a mockery of the purpose of the site. KEEP COMMENTS FOR CARS ONLY!! There are other forums for bitching and anger management.
Written on: 20/07/2005
It's very simple - what Aytonkid says is WRONG.
<br>
<br>It is an experience with an abused car and not typical. The views are irrelevant to the model in general. Btw, this 'rubbish' engine is tried and tested and known to be one of the best. The much acclaimed Noble super car uses the Ford Duratech with two turbos pumping out over 350BHP from it - why would they choose a weak engine as the base for their car?
<br>
<br>The Aston Martin V12? Yep, that's effectively two Duratechs
<br>
<br>I think this is more a lesson in buying used cars, particularly high performance cars with high mileage. Does the reviewer know anything about car mechanics? Was the car inspected by one before purchase? I doubt it.
<br>
<br>This is not a good review centre if people rubbish things because a) They fail to get a joke in the first place or b) They made a poor choice.
<br>
<br>If I raced ANY production car round a track for a few days it would have problems. You would not then find me rubbishing it because the clutch wore out for example – that would be my own fault.
<br>
<br>Same thing buying a used car, you never really know what's happened to it. I'm quite sure a simple and cheap compression test would have flagged up a problem with the reviewer's car before purchase.
<br>
<br>I pressed on the garage business because it sounded like nonsense – if was stripped and rebuilt properly it would have been okay, end of story!

I really have rattled your cage haven't I getway! Again you have failed to review the car - merely bitch about me again. You really are quite sad and a serial offender at upsetting people. I have come to the conclusion that you feel that YOUR opinion is the only opinion and that any others simply do not count - a terrible personality trait. From this experience, when you comment on any other reviews, please do not try to railroad people into your way of thinking as you are clearly trying with me - RESPECT THEIR OPINION!
<br>
<br>I noticed that you do make MANY assumptions so I will put the record straight. The car had a full RAC inspection certificate what merely highlighted a damaged bumper. I do have a very good working knowledge of cars which is how I came to this conclusion. Having owned many cars, this one has been a real pain and I merely gave my experience of which I am entitled. Sorry if you cannot comprehend that. Ok, you have had a good experience but I haven't disagreed with you have I?? As for high mileage - any modern car worth it's salt should be able to breeze 100k without major problems. As mentioned earlier, the engine wasn't the sole problem. Steering rack failure and a host of other mechanical faults emerged. These were not 'consumable' items otherwise it wouldn't bother me - they were parts that should not have broken.
<br>
<br>Getaway, PLEASE have a little more respect for others' opinions. That is all I ask. Saying I am "wrong" is wrong in itself - be fair and allow for freedom of speach instead of trying to grind others down. I am entitled to my opinion and if you don't agree thats fair enough but don't make assumptions on things you know nothing about. Again, please keep this forum free of bitching and STICK TO REVIEWING CARS NOT THEIR OWNERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Review Rating Ford Mondeo ST200
<br>
<br>Helpful Unhelpful Agree Disagree
<br>0 5 0 1
<br>
<br>It's not just me that doesn't think your 'review' isn't much help, never mind disagreeing with it.
<br>
<br>If the RAC charged you for an inspection and the car fell apart straight after, I'd take it up with them.
<br>
<br>As I said, you buying a duffer, doesn't make the car inherently bad, or the engine rubbish.
<br>
<br>The fact remains that many people who are far more qualified than you or I, whether they be car manufacturers or motoring jornalists, have never had anything but praise for the Duratech V6.
<br>
<br>If you can link me to ANY article that says ANYTHING negative about the Ford Duratech V6 I will disappear forever!
<br>
<br>You dismissing it as 'rubbish' just shows that you are not capable of writing a subjective review. I haven't written one my self because there is little point in my repeating what everyone (apart from you) has already said.
Written on: 21/07/2005
My god you are a persistent idiot! I've made my review so DEAL WITH IT! In a moment I will show you some comments on this engine. Note that many engines have been changed out completely with the same failures occuring.
<br>
<br>You have proved you don't have a brain with your weak argument, your only retort is aimed at me. You can't get your point across (as per all your posts) as others have noted and again you make assumptions not based on facts and try to offend the reviewer. The car didn't break down "straight away" and nor did I say as much. LEARN TO READ PROPERLY!!!!!!! YOU simply ASSUMED that which makes you look a fool! The reviewers stated that my review was unhelpful, if you had half a brain you would have seen that they posted positive comments on the car. Why would anyone say that my negative review was helpful if they posted a positive comment?? That would be like shooting yourself in the foot would it not??
<br>
<br>Why do you persist in reviewing the reviewer? Are you a communist? because you certainly don't believe in freedom of speach. If you wish to comment on me again, PLEASE READ facts and don't ASSUME as you have done in ALL of your posts so far. I know you are trying to stick up for the car, albeit making a bad job of it. I have SIMPLY COMMENTED ON MY EXPERIENCE which is having a profound affect on your temperament which shows in your posts.
<br>
<br>Here are some comments from others who have had similar experiences to me. Remember, one of the reviewers works for a Ford dealer. Link is here:
<br>
<br>http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?f=66&h=0&t=70120
<br>
<br>Comments from other dissapointed consumers:
<br>
<br>"Can anyone recommend a Ford specialist in the South East with experience of the Duratec V6? The headgasket has gone in my Mondeo and the dealer wants a fortune to fix it."
<br>
<br>"One of my directors at work had a Duratec V6 mondeo and after 3 engines,driven not thrashed was given a refund by Ford......."
<br>
<br>"The Duratec V6 engines are not the best it has to be said. The most common problems are head gaskets, piston slap and bore wear, and big end/ main bearing failure. In the last year we (I work for a Ford dealer) have replaced nine or ten engines, and they aren't that common an engine."
<br>
<br>"After that little list, whats right with the engine then , imagine the s*** people would give TVR for producing an engine like that. Wereas the Vx/GM V6 goes on forever, he hopes"
<br>
<br>Now getaway, I think that puts your argument well and truly up in smoke. Sticking to your promise - will you now leave and stop defending this car. Remember, one garage had to replace nine or ten engines (which aren't a common engine)!!! speaks volumes I think. Doubtless you will reply with more unfounded rubbish but I have little more to say on the subject after reading other reviews as detailed above.
Written on: 25/07/2005
I did say proper articles, not more unqualified posts on a forum. I include the so called 'technicians' at Ford main dealers in that too - most of them are just fitters, who I for one would not trust my car to.
<br>
<br>Of course you can find any make of car with a horror story like yours, the point is is doesn't make it a bad car, you are a minority.
Written on: 25/07/2005
The Ford technicians must have changed the engines for a laugh then eh? I guess all of the customers who returned to complain were wrong as well. So do Ford employ technicians who don't know much? Says a lot about Ford then doesn't it - they obviously employ muppets to design them as well as look after them. Surely well trained techncians come as part of the package when buying a quality car?? Not with Ford.
<br>
<br>Oh and by the way, you did say "ANY" articles. Read your comments. Not only do you mis-quote others but you also mis-quote yourself. I think you had better stop posting now as your argument is in shreds.
Written on: 26/07/2005
Not just Ford, I think all main dealers employ fitters, trained to do a certain job. I had the same experience when I owned a Jaguar, of which, have you ever heard of Nikosil?
<br>
<br>There was an engine problem that affected Jaguar and BMW after about 50K miles(your great German cars!) The solution to the problem - they never fixed, just swapped out the whole engine. Sound familiar?
<br>
<br>My argument in shreds, and all the other reviewers wrong too? Yeah right.
<br>
<br>By the way, what are you driving now? Or are you a complete hypocrite and still drive the ST?
<br>
<br>You clearly have a strange opinion about what is a good car as you think the dreadful,ugly, slow, suspect handling MK1 Hyundai Coupé is a good/good looking car!!! Once again, you must be right and the rest of the world, including the motoring press are wrong :)
<br>
<br>The MK2 IS good looking, but that MK1 - you just haven't got a clue...
Written on: 26/07/2005
You are wrong about garage technicians - my BMW main dealer employ only high quality staff unlike Ford - says a lot doesn't it?
<br>
<br>I no longer have the Hyundai as it was a stop gap between cars. Although it was a nice car, hence it got a nice review. No it wasn't powerful but it did the job and was reliable while I had it unlike the the ST which spent more time in the garage than it did on the road (not reliable). Oh, by the way it was the motoring press that said the mark 2 coupe was ugly, not the mark one (AGAIN you get it wrong!!!). Interesting that you are still reviewing me? Having owned both cars, I can comment on both, you however cannot.
<br>
<br>I really think that if you are to pick up on reviews you don't take kindly to you shouldn't be on this forum. It would be sad if there were people like you picking up on all the posts wouldn't it? Anyway, who are you to disagree with others' comments? Are you some kind of expert? I think not judging by your ill found comments and your struggle to get your point across. You drive a very dated 90's rep mobile so that says a lot about your taste in styling!! Its good for carrying the shopping home with that big ugly boot! After all, its a "mondeo" for heaven sake!! More to the point, didn't you say that if I could find anything negative about this car you would disappear forever? Why are you still spouting crap? Not a man of your word I see.
<br>
<br>Do I have the Ford now? Hell no!! I drive a BMW 330 now which is a quality car with an excellent powerful refined engine and excellent handling thanks to its M-tech suspension. Never had a problem with it and don't expect to. I will be writing a review on this car also but doubtless you will argue with it even though you have probably never owned one. The dealers give excellent service as you would expect from a luxury marque (unlike cheap Fords). Give it a few years and your Ford rep mobile will have rusted away anyway. Did I mention rust of which Fords are famous for?? You can't say that BMW are bad - get real!!
<br>
<br>Like I said, I have owned an ST and it was pants - why would I lie? I have moved on now with a stylish 330 coupe and away from a dated unreliable 90's car - and you say I have no taste in cars!!! The 90's are over and cars have improved since then. Not to mention 90's styling especially the mondeo is awful! Have you had anything welded yet?!

I am sorry people but.. you seem to have forgotten what this site was about lol the 1st few postings I smiled at but i couldnt be bothered to read the other 400 back & fourth... agree to disagree before you both get kicked off a 'car review site' lol
Written on: 25/10/2005
Ok! lol! I lol will remember that lol.
<br>
<br>As you so kindly pointed out it is a review forum, which is exactly what we have been doing. So where exactly does your comment fit in? lol
Written on: 26/10/2005
I am new to Ford as have always been a Vauxhall man. I have temporary ownership of an ST200, Blue and I think it is a great car. The V6 engine is soooo smooth and quiet, until you get excited and open the throttle. Like other comments above have said, the induction noise is beautiful (especially with the K&N Replacement Filter). It pulls like train and when it gets to 3500 - 4000 revs the powerband kicks in and acceleration is excellent (smile :-). It is just a shame I have to sell it.
Written on: 04/11/2005
All this bickering is a bit out of order. I'm new to forums in general, and none of the reviews are really that helpful.
<br>i presently own a 2.0 glx mondeo and it is a fantastic car loads of room for me which is helpful because i'm over 6 foot. i never really looked at fords because i was after a vectra but in my opinion i picked the better of the 2? The 2.0 engine is very reliable and economical to maintain which is fine, i wish to know if i will have the same pleasures with owning a st200
Written on: 08/11/2005
Indeed you will!
<br>
<br>Before the ST I had a V6 powered Cougar for three years and I can definitely say the Duratech is superb AND reliable.
<br>
<br>That said, I'd imagine they do have a hard life so if buying a high miler (like the reviwer here) get the car looked at proffesionally including a compression test.
<br>

<br>I found this in What Car magazine:

<br>
<br>I suppose they're wrong as well. It makes me laugh that you all have little respect for my comments (I suppose you feel the same about What Car magazine - what would they know?!). Stop kidding yourselves about this garbage Ford and garbage Ford customer care... or lack of it.
<br>
<br>Please take the time to read the comments made by What Car magazine and the poor guy who shelled out £18k for a Ford lemon (and he's one of many believe me). I have highighted a major flaw with this car and company - we are the consumers and its about time Ford respected their customer base and started making cars that don't break down and rust after 3 years. Come on - its 2005 for heaven sake!!! It was fine in the days of the Ford model T but we have standards now. It is simply not good enough for new cars to break down and need a multitude of repairs like the Ford ST does. Vote with your feet - don't buy a Ford until they buck up their act and start producing quality and reliable cars. Doubtless some of you will stick up for Ford - more fool you. THESE CARS ARE ALL LEMONS - AVOID OR YOU WILL LIVE TO REGRET IT!!
<br>
<br>I rest my case.

Getaway - mine was not a high mileage car - that is something that you made up yourself.
<br>
<br>Please read the attached page from What Car magazine. Notice the mileage on the car and then tell me that they're excellent cars. Notice also how many separate things went wrong with the engine, including the replacement engines. Stupendous!

OK!
<br>
<br>Believe me I have better things to do than spend all day looking for reviews - I do work hard for a living!
<br>
<br>I think the article spells it out really, and at that mileage you can't really argue - enough said.

It's a shame you had such a hard time with your ST as they are a good car!
It might not have the build quality some other rivals, but it is cheaper! Even when new, £23,000 is cheap for a car of the ST200's standard. I can only assume that you had a poorly built and maintained car, not by yourself but by the previous owners.
I have always had Fords and found them excellent, but like any car manufacturer, they are not perfect. Whilst I stand by my claim that the ST200 is a superb car, I accept that your particular car was not of the same standard.
It is also a shame that this forum has taken a slightly nasty turn by some who disagree.
I hope you get on better with your next car.

I personally own a ST24, owned it for just over 6 months. Obviously not as quick as the ST200. But love all the gadgets. Looking a bit outdated now though. Bit on the juicey side hey.
Trying to sell mine. It appears that quite a few people are having issues with selling mondeo's.
Never thought I would ever buy a ford. But the ST isn't that bad. The V6 sounds great. More comfy than hot hatches! Been driving my dads Celica 190 for the past few months. No comparison. If you've got the money and no children. Invest in a real sports car!
Written on: 30/11/2006
The only good point is the brakes?? Every one knows the brakes on ST200's are dire, but the rest of the car is top drawer. Take someone who knows what they are looking at next time you buy a hybrid model.

I've drven a few nice cars in my time but none of them have drawn the admiring glances and interest that my Ford Mondeo ST200 saloon does.You can keep your M3's and your Quattros,- if you don't want to be embarrassed, then park well away from an ST200 for you'll be green with envy when you don't draw so much as second glance in your German or Japanese 'nearly' cars.
I've owned mine for just over a year now and I've seen nothing in this class that I'd change it for.
It handles like a dream,...

After reading Paul's comments on "I drive a Mondeo" I had to laugh, I produce the same response. It's not till people see the ST200 in it's glory do they understand what a Mondeo should look like.
I've had my Ltd Edition Saloon for a year, i have spent a small fortune on cleaning stuff and styling bits, I also make my own! Mine is now sitting at 212BHP with the assistance of a few choice mods!
I love the car, everything about it!
Have a look at my site for more info on the car:...

Hi GAS,
<br>
<br>What did you do to the engine to tune it up to 212HPs? I also have a ST200 and I'd like to give it a little more power, maybe adding a smaller turbo or alike. Any sugestions?

Hi, Emma from leicester, a Girly driving an ST!. mine sits @ standard bhp, low miles @ 36000, still low enough to chip, make any difference, i want at least 250 outta this little baby. I agree, brakes are a problem, mine replaced 3 times in 23 months, discs & pads dont match up to manufacturers advice, brakes are standard ghia mondeo when they should be sports. Alos wondering, mine has a 0.5sec flat spot at around 3000 revs flat out.. again would a chip sort this?

When people ask me what do I drive, as they do!, I say, "Just a Mondeo". Conversation usually ends there, but I always inwardly smile and laugh inwardly at the Audi or BMW driver before me. This is because Ford Mondeo drivers have a secret weapon and it is the ST200. Do Not confuse this Wolf in Sheep's, with the inferior ST24. In glorious anonymity this only comes in Beautiful Blue turns heads with its Styling, not many around, excellent residual value.

Couldn't agree more...I also 'just drive a Mondeo'. The best thing about the ST200 is it's cornering and reaction to changes in road surface, it doesn't even get phased by mid corner bumps, it just leaves the road for a while and grips like hell when it lands back down.
<br>
<br>The engine is just short of spectacular though, it doesn't feel like 200bhp. It would have been much better matched to a good six speed box. That said, the engine is very responsive and the five gears it does have are well matched (as long as you take it close to the red line)
<br>
<br>The worst part...I have to replace it soon, and probably with a golf GTI 150PD, not quite the same beast!

hey :) you mentioned the flickering lights! i had a new alternator fitted and ever since all lights inside and out are flickering, if you press the accelerator a lilttle then the flickering wll stop. i have also noticed that sometimes when stood at the traffic lights if you press the footbrake then the lights will flicker less. its been like this for about 8 months now. you say its an easy fix when you know how. how do you do it ?
