I'm a prospective buyer. Out of all the agents I've dealt with BM are undeniably the worst. I understand the need to 'sell' but I find their methods completely unprofessional, to the extent I felt compelled to write a review (something which I've never done). The way they have tried to cross sell services (legal and financial) is manipulative. The message they send is, if you don't sign up to our 'early bird scheme' and use our lawyers/ finance broker then you're not an attractive... (read more)

Worst experience with letting agents EVER!!! We agreed on the price, on the move in date and everything. They took the money from us (agency fees + rent + deposit), but didn't give us the keys on the same day, because the landlord hadn't signed the agreement yet. The next thing we know - the landlord changed his mind and doesn't want to let the property to us anymore, and we are left with NO MONEY and NO FLAT at the same time. We had to move out from our previous flat the next day after this... (read more)

We had the same experience with the New Malden branch, it put us off buying for a few months as we assumed that all agents would be the same. Won’t buy a house through them and actively discourage anyone we know to do the same.

They were happy to value the propery and get it on their books, when it come to sorting out the paper work, and answeing questions, no information. No returns of phone calls. Called to speak to the person who valuded it, was always out of the office. She didn't respond to emails, called. Spoke to another colleuge same issues, was advised a call back, but after almost 3 days nothing. Find another agent to sell your property. (read more)

For a first time buyer: overall a good experience with William H Brown (a sequence branch) in Ely. I actually read these reviews before even making an offer - and I have to say I nearly didn't make an offer at all after what people have said. I really wanted the house, so I decided to go with their mortgage broker and let them refer me to one of their panel solicitors. From the first phone call to arrange the viewing, they were very determined to get me talking to their broker (before I... (read more)

Crooks, liars and cheats... Barnard Marcus lied to us all the way through. When our property fell through we were beyond belief being that we had paid £1200 to them for bad advise and emotional blackmail! We are a young first time buying couple and they saw us coming from a mile away. I am truly DISGUSTED with the service provided. We could never get them on the phone when we needed to ask questions, when we did eventually get someone we were fobbed off telling us to go to the solicitors to... (read more)

Made an offer of the asking price on a house through Bernard Marcus to be told i had been successful. However the hard sell was for me to use their broker and when i refused and had to keep refusing they were not happy. The next day i was told another offer of the asking price had been made and to secure it i would need to use their broker which i may add was rubbish. I withdrew my offer got in touch with the vendor to find out that no offer had been made on my behalf of the asking price... (read more)

These guys are absolutly woeful. Despite marketing my property for over two years they didnt come close to selling it. Rude, incompetent and a complete waste of time and money - even left our property listed on rightmove for 6 months after it was sold by another agency. And the best bit 18 months... after being instructed that I was moving to a different agency they send a demand for £400. My property listed with an equally unpleasnt agency with the initials B E who d did at least manage to... (read more)

Took out a 12 month tenancy with a 6 month break clause in an almost completely unfurnished property (apart from sofas). I was not happy with the 6 month break clause as another agent from another company told me that it was only for 6 months and that's why their company did not take it on. I queried this with Barnard Marcus and was told that it was for 12 months but there may be a tiny possibility the landlady would return after 6 months but this was very unlikely as she had been abroad for... I recently Sold and bought from Barnard Marucs and have been in my new home for a week now. I have moved into a 4 bed house I bought from the Tooting branch on Frinton Road. I found the whole team very friendly and professional especially Daniel Cross- who we had initial contact with, and also Michael Fyffe the Branch Manager. Michael put me in contact with the team in Streatham as this is where I had to sell my property. I ended up speaking with Chris in the streatham branch who ended up... (read more)

The first listing magically disappeared off the website and came back saying an offer had been made... fair enough. But why no reply? My wife and I were first time buyers and found a property that we both really liked being sold by Barnard Marcus of 120 Mitcham Lane, London, SW16. The estate agent, came across as friendly and supportive. The house was initially listed as £285,000. On our first visit to the property we were told that an offer of £250,000 was accepted but fell through as the buyer didn't have his funds sorted. We were effectively told that if we put in an offer it would be accepted. After our second visit... (read more)

We found a buy to let property with Barnard Marcus Croydon branch, we had our viewing to which the agent turned up 30 minutes late. Things progressed and we decided to put an offer in which was immediately accepted, we then started our paperwork. I bought a property through Barnard Marcus in Worcester Park and used their in house mortgage broker. I had to pay a small fee for the service they provided. You get what you pay for. We went through Allen and Harris in Calne, a Sequence Homes branch. We went to see a property and made an offer which was accepted. We thought, great, we will arrange the mortgage through their broker as it would make sense and be faster. What a mistake that was! Very poor. Their estate agents 'for sale' sign blew over in the wind, bringing down part of the wall with it. At first the Chiswick office tried to claim that legally, it was not their responsibility, and I should talk to the sign company they had employed. Then they said that the wall must have been weak anyway, so the problem was nothing to do with them. Then they accepted responsibility and kept promising me they would rectify the problem, without actually doing anything about it.... (read more)

Don't go near their mortgage brokers. I used one who works out of Sequence's Allerton Road branch in Liverpool. She promised all sorts, collected a fee, and did nothing except recommend me a mortgage for which I didn't qualify. She compounded this by then recommending another product but making a mistake about how the mechanics of it worked, meaning it was also unsuitable and I had to pull out having wasted £1000 on a (now useless) survey and in Sequence's own fees.
They did nothing to help...

A WORD OF ADVICE IF THINKING OF USING THIS ESTATE AGENT. Barnard Marcus Streatham expect you to pay a fee up front to market your property, this must be because they have a low expectation of selling, or it's just daylight robbery. Their contract runs for 20 weeks, when most other agencies run for 12 weeks, so they have no incentive to sell.
I had a very poor experience with this agent and would strongly recommend you don't use them.

Had problems with both the sales and lettings side of this joke for a company. The sales side wanted me to try to sell my house at 140k, every other agent was suggesting 170-180k. The guy was a salesman who claimed he didn't need to know the area or the house to sell it, he could sell anything. Of course he can if he undervalues it by 20%. I totally agree! My daughter put in an offer for a house they were marketing, and when she didn't agree to use their brokered mortgage - which entailed about £2000 of spurious "fees" - they told her that they would put the property back on the market, even though the vendors had accepted her offer and she had a mortgage arranged with the Halifax at a fraction of the price Barnard Marcus were demanding. This firm's practices are thoroughly unethical, and my daughter will be referring her case to the Office of Fair Trading.
