The DVD picture on my Toshiba 32ZP18, through component cabling, is nothing short of stunning! I've never found a use for the 100hz scan mode, the natural scan is crystal clear. I picked this up for £320 with a replaced teletext board, so feel pretty chuffed with this bargain.
The sound quality as standard doesn't really apply. I've changed the surround speakers to larger full range speakers for general viewing and have a Sony STR DA3000ES for DVD viewing, but as standard, the sound isn't too boxy and dialogue in the centre is clear enough.

The Toshiba 32ZP18 is a great widescreen TV, but it is let down by the faulty teletext card, which appears to cause the power on issue. I have given it a low features score as the TV does not have teletext anymore.
I have had this TV for over 5 years now, and it only started developing the 'standby' issue a couple of months ago.
I never bothered to get it fixed, as I thought now was a good time to buy a plasma screen. Anyway, I searched Google for faulty Toshiba's and I found the Review Centre website. I removed the card myself, and bingo!! The TV is as good as new. Cheers Delzrx.

I've owned the TV for 3 1/2 years now, and I have had no problems up until now. Like many others on this site, I suffered the dreaded 'stuck in standby' fault. I called out a TV engineer who instantly fixed it by removing the PCB which controls the Teletext (I never use this anyway). This PCB is 65mm*85mm and has a blue connection strip on it numbered 1 to 15, not sure what the part number is, but on the reverse it says R-1786.
My TV is now working perfectly, minus Teletext, and the call out cost me £40.

We managed to find the part but tv has gone and stuck itself in standby mode again! help please!
Written on: 04/12/2010
We have the same problem and we're trying to fix it. Could you please tell me whereabouts in the TV this PCB is coz its like looking for a needle in a haystack!

I found this review very helpful because...
Absolutely spot on! thanks
My TV was not responding to the remote control, I thought something was up with the IR receiver, then after switching off the TV (model 36ZP18Q)on main switch I could no longer switch it back on, it just stays in standby.
After removing this card with numbers R-1786 on one side and PD0267 on the other, the TV now works fine minus teletext.
I have now put the card back in and is still ok, so maybe a loose connection?

Thanx Delzrx. A friend was getting rid of this tv due to stand by problem. It ended up at my house. Read your review, removed pcb board, hey presto fully working tv for free. Removal is exactly as Delzrx says and anyone can do this I'm a near retirement age woman.
Thanx again Delzrx.

I had a Toshiba with a similar problem years ago, and had it "repaired" several times until I gave it away. I don't know why, but I bought the 32ZP18 and it developed the problem you described. I have taken the card out and now it seems to be working fine.
Fantastic!!! Thanks. It's a pity the manufacturers don't take any notice of their customer problems. They might actually make better TVs.

Glad to be of service mate. My TV's still working a treat after its open heart surgery!

Thanks Delzrx, this worked a treat and saved me the £40 - if I'm ever in Rotherham, I owe you a beer or three.

Overall the Toshiba 32ZP18 is fantastic.
Looks great, picture is great, sound is good.
Up until now, very reliable, and would highly recommend it. Except just developed this stuck in standby mode fault and it's a pain.
I remember when I was buying the TV from Currys, the guy was indeed saying the advantages of the like of Sony and Panasonic was the TV's reliability over time. (I thought he was just referring to the tubes, obviously not). So, for 3 years I've been very happy with the decision to buy this TV. It cost £1,500 (July 2002). But now it doesn't even turn on, great! Even knowing this I still don't think I'd have gone for any other make or model. And even now with LCD and Plasma in the market, I've still not seen a better TV pound-for-pound.

Overall I am very pleased with the set, especially the picture and the range of input/outputs. It will be interesting to see whether the crack in the case that is developing is a general manufacturing fault or not. The set has not received any impact that I know of.
written by on 01/04/2003
Bought the set a couple of months ago, no hum, no picture distortion, no complaints. I suppose you could get better sound quality with a seperates system but you'd be lucky to find a better built-in system.
written by v3nkman. on 15/03/2003
I bought the 32ZP18 earlier this week and have already been on to Toshiba and the service engineers about the 'noticeable' humming generated from somewhere in the back of the television.
Even when the sound is quite high you can still hear it - not what you'd expect from a set which costs over a thousand pounds. People who have televisions from Sony/Philips have all said that they don't have the same problem, and more often than not they have 100hz widescreens too.
The service engineer told me that this noise is natural and then tried to blind me with jargon and the various reasons why this noise occurs. I was told that it is something to do with the coils in the back of the machine turning/vibrating... the guy then went on to mention something about degaussing - after that I switched off. He then claimed that this noise should stop after a couple of weeks, that these coils need time to settle down.
I am dubious, but he did tell me to call back in a week or so if this was still happening.
I'm not happy.

I have owned a Toshiba 36ZP18 set for over a year. Have had the same "humming" issue. After taking delivery of the set about a year ago, called out an engineer about the "humming". Engineer mentioned :- "Coils / Laquer" etc. If it makes you feel any better, its not a picture degrading fault. To be honest you do get used to it. I've found the set to be an astonishing performer, particularly if paired with a decent DVD player and hooked up using the EXT4 - Component Video Input with "IXOS 1703" cable.
written by Picasso. on 10/03/2003
I have had this set since the end of January & have been very pleased, great picture, good sound (apart from slight hum when very quiet passages), Excellent design....
.... up until today when the set failed, switches itself off after a few minutes, which according to Toshiba indicates a fault on the TV which powers down as self protection. So I am now awaiting an engineering visit to rectify the problem.
Has anyone else experienced anything similar, & what was the failed component.

We have just received a replacement set and again find the TV to have geometry problems (as other reviewers have done) which is frustrating. Our first set tilted downwards slightly by 7mm from left to right. The engineer arrived and stated that we needed a replacement, as there was no option to change the tilt angle (unlike some other makes of TVs). The replacement set tilts left to right to a lesser degree, but unfortunately the screen seems to tilt downwards at the top/centre of the screen. Due to the hassle of packing/unpacking the TV we are inclined to keep the set, and apart from the geometry problem we are happy with it.

It's the best picture I have ever seen but without the sound problems resolved I am rather frustrated

I wrote one of the other reviews for this set and did have a similar problem with the 5.1 sound on DVD. I had bought a Philips DVD player and was using the digital coaxial cable for sound. It stubbornly refused to work apart from the odd moment. Having spoke to my dealer they suggested using a different brand of DVD player as there are incredibly some compatiblity problems between brands. They cut me a deal and I got the Toshiba SD220 which is actually quite brilliant for the money. The sound has been perfect ever since.
written by Will. on 26/02/2002
Having tried a couple of cheaper 28" Philips models and found problems with both, I decided to bite the bullet and spend more money on this Toshiba 32ZP18 television set. My original intention had been to get a fairly basic 28" TV as my lounge is not big and a seperate surround sound package at a later date. However, this Toshiba had caught my eye as the picture frame TV surround means that it is actually about the same size as most 28" models. The built in Dolby 5.1 was just an added bonus. Having spoken to various people I couldn't find anyone with a bad word to say about it and most thought it was one of the best TV's on the market. I shopped around and eventually got it for about £1250.
The picture is superb with the most impressive colour depth and richness. It naturally suffers with the motion problems of live fast moving broadcasts of all 100HZ TV's but not to spoil any enjoyment. The picture actually shows up poor reception even with Sky Digital and the image can become a little blocky. However this is not a fault of the TV, but worth pointing out for those who have bad quality reception. DVD is where the TV shows off to the full, with pretty much faultless picture reproduction. In fact you can even notice the difference in DVD quality the picture is so good!
Sound is more than capable but not breathtaking. A seperate package would always be preferable but at least having it built in you get good sound with all TV programs and not just DVD.
Overall it might seem a lot of money, but just look at what you get. It's an attractive looking set with great picture and 5.1 sound. Toshiba have really set a standard for the competition. Quite superb.

I agree totally, we just bought the 36" big brother and other than the colossal weight I can't fault it. It would be nice to be able to store more than one personal colour balance setting though, satellite and DVD always look different.
Written on: 01/06/2009
Just 2 say thanks to this RC. Had the same issue with my 36'. Just spent 30minutes and fixed it by removing the PCB. Saved myself sm dough but better was the satisfaction. Like they say, you need to be careful putting the cover back on. TJ

I would just like to reiterate Andy cooke's comments about no messing around with the back of the TV unless you know what yer doing. I successfully removed the afore mentioned PD0267 and was feeling very pleased with myself, imagining how great it would be to have the old 36 incher back in working order. Unfortunately while putting the case back on i knocked the back of the CRT and after a large hiss and a puzzled look realised i had just completely rogered the TV. Its not even mine. i suspect a replacement tube is just a bit more than the TV is worth now. You live and learn .... or maybe you don't

My 36ZP18 has a fault where sometimes it comes on normally and other times it comes on (static on screen etc) but with no sound or picture. When running normally, it is possible to change channels etc for a few minutes then after that everything freezes and it gets stuck on the channel its tuned into. Its impossible to adjust anything (volume etc) either on the remote control or on the front panel. Any suggestions please?
Written on: 13/08/2006
Just to say that the removal of PD0267 works as well on the 36-inch bigger brother. My one developed the same symptoms and I pulled the PD0267 card - now works absolutely fine (note - do not go into the back of a television to do this unless you know what you are doing around lethal currents)
Written on: 10/09/2005
Just a quick note to say thanks for the advice regarding the teletext card. I have had a Toshiba 32zd26p for the last 3 years, it was working fine until today when it turned itself off. I could turn it on for a few seconds but would get no picture, just occasionally I'd see the channel number on the screen before it turned off again. I took the back off (please don't do this on my advice unless you know the hazards involved) and removed the card labelled PD0267. The TV works fine now - I don't need teletext as I use a freeview box.
Thanks once again,

Hi

I am by no means a TV expert and need some advice. I recently bought a Toshiba 32ZP46. I am disappointed that it is "pixelating" quite badly particuary with fast moving images, say, a football match. I'm not sure if this is down to the connections between our Sky Digibox and the TV (or something else like the DVD / VCR connections) or whether I need to configure the TV for a better picture.

Had this TV since jan 2003. It has now developed this annoying fault, keeps turning off. Christmas day of all days. Thanks for the info, we have taken a card out of the back and it's now on (still on after 15 minutes). Will let you know if this has cured the problem. Contacted UK Toshiba website but no answer yet. I've still got it under warranty but we are out in Spain. Thanks and happy new year.
Written on: 29/10/2004
Thanks for the info on the part. I have now had a local TV repair service out to take a look at the problem as it was getting worse.

The first thing he looked at was the teletext card, and hey presto it seemed to work. He took it back to he shop and re-flowed the solder. there were two surface mount IC's on the card and the rest of the components were caps and a relay/switch of some sort, the repair only cost me £35 but he did say the board (measured about 3" x 4") was quite expensive.

He looked at this first as he had a similar problem in the past and toshiba's service centre helped him out with the repair.

It has only been one day but it has improved at present, I will post again in a few weeks to let you know. He did advise me that if the repair fails then I should try and get the part number and price from Toshiba as it was very easy to replace.
Written on: 13/10/2004
Sorry mate, I can't help you there, what I have done though is logged onto the UK Toshiba web site and gone to the support site and entered as a customer.

It isn't much help as it only gives you the user manual, however, there is a glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel, which I feel at the moment may have a draft close to it as I haven't had a reply yet. What is available is a contact us option where you can put in your query and hope for a reply.

My problem with the TV turning itself off is getting worse and if what one of the other posts stated that it could be the control circuitry, I bet its going to be expensive. I'm saying this because TV engineers don't replace components these days they replace cards.

Any way good luck and I hope you get a faster response than I do (although to date it has only been 3 days) but comming from a sevice environment We would be closed down with response times like that.
Written on: 30/09/2004
That pcb is about £150 for the part. Alternatively, an engineer can reflow the solder on the defective chip, which would be the cheaer way around it if out of warranty. They use lead free solder during manufacture and it's causes poor connections.

I have had this TV since March 03 and its been OK - until now. I was messing with the 3 factory settings and now I have changed 'my' settings - settings M. I get flary whites - even with the contrast brightness down. I've tried 35/60/35 ect but nomatter what combination I use - its still the same. Can anyone help??

I am now wondering if my problem is the same as yours. I don't use terestrial TV arial only sky channels. When the TV is turned on it picks up the control from the Sky Digi box on EXT1 and auto selects this, if you leave the TV on this it will start to play up, going into, what seems to be standby, with the loss of controller use until it settles down.

If, however, you turn it straight to EXT4 (my sony DVD player) on the component connections it does not play up.

Out of curiosity, did the TV repair guy give you an estimate of the repair cost?
Written on: 06/09/2004
My problem has been diagnosed but not fixed yet. There is a small teletext daughter board on the main control board, and it has developed a fault that prevents the TV from coming on. It's intermittant - it worked just once when it was put back in! - but then failed again. But take it out & the TV works fine (except of course no teletext). So waiting for TV man to replace part.

After getting used to the 'slant', 'humming noise' (see earlier review) and annoying red light I had the problem of 'stuck in standby'. Luckily still in warranty and eventually got it fixed by local company. Had to drop it off myself as toshiba and krishAV would send engineer or deal with it in any capacity. 'Touch wood' it's been fine now for good 10 months however I'm trying to find the surround sound speakers that go with the TV but to no avail. Does anyone have any suggestions on which ones they are, what other ones are best, where they are available from and any prices. Have spoken to Toshiba and no response as yet.

I have had the Toshiba Set for around 18 months to 2 years and in general I am very please both with its looks (sold it for the wife) and the features that it has. I did like the idea of having an internal 5.1 decoder but alas I don't use it, I have an external DVD Cinema system, which after hearing the Tosh perform with a 5.1 DVD stand alone player attached wasn't that impressed.

Back to the reason why I am making a post here, I am experiencing the same problem as Tony Willcox and it is reaching the really irritating stage. I haven't as yet got anyone out to look at it, but after I just had a really hard time just getting it come on I thought I would look on the NET to see if it is a common problem, and straight away I found this page.

What I would like to know is, has anybody else had this problem and have they had it fixed? I would really appreciate it if they could post a reply here.

I've had a 32ZP18Q since June 2002, and have been well pleased mostly, although the picture drops out altogether if the signal is weak (occasionally on the south coast). However, it has now developed a fault. Gradually, the handset (and local controls) failed to operate increasingly quickly after turn-on, and now if it turns on at all it is locked in selection - no commands work. Sounds like a failure on Power-On-Self-Test - it seems to shut itself down. Also, LED disappears immediately on switch-off, rather than decaying over several seconds. TV repair man has been - thinks it may be the main control chip - I'm not convinced. Anybody got similar experience?

To be honest, haven't been at all pleased. Cannot get contrast, brightness anything like it should be. Set was actually set up with 100% contrast, whcih suggest there may have been a problem with set at outset.

There is always a small gap at top of the screen, where picture does not fill the screen.

Had it nearly a year now, so must get this sorted out with Toshiba before the 12 months runs out.

We've had the Tosh for about 1 year now and we absolutely love it. We haven't noticed any humming noise but I guess that's because we have it plugged on our Denon amp and M&S speakers. We're now watching thousands of DVDs (thanks to www.lovefilm.com - brilliant site for renting DVDs by the way) . Thank you Nemesis for the tip on how to set up contrast, brightness and colour, we used it when we set it up and I was pleased to find your review again when we seemed to have lost the settings (see Nemesis' review above), I have now wisely written them down in the manual.

My parents bought this set and placed it in their 20' square lounge in the corner. When they first turned it on I was around 8' away and the picture was bright, colourful but (sorry everyone) really artifactish and 'digital'. The picture you view seems to be a framestored representation of pure analogue and even though I was looking at the picture from 8' away it was very poor compared to a standard high quality Sony/JVC/Panasonic with little distortions in people's faces etc. I then stood back to around 15'+ and found it to be more acceptable.....! (NOT THE POINT REALLY!)

On the DTT and SAT front i.e Mpeg video - it doesn't show up every error in the poorness of digital mpeg (vs. analogue) - IT DOUBLES IT!!

PART TWO: (The Really Bad Bit)

The TV is near NO magnetic sources apart from its own internal speakers and oh boy what bad gaussing of the tube has occurred (seen this on three sets now in the same places - bad top left bad top right and down the left and right sides lesser so)

What is bad? Bad is when you get ANY impurity at all but this TV takes the biscuit!!!! Purity on a B&W film showed BRIGHT bluish patches - this is a MAJOR DESIGN FAULT). A DTT box menu (pure yellow) gave rise to sickly greenish patching in the same places.

This TV is goddam laughable. It may be ok for the first few months but I strongly recommend you get another set before you think to yourself "I'm sure this was a black and white movie? Maybe they've coloured it in"..........

PS. 100Hz - WOW! Its a MUST BUY!! except 100Hz is the worst TV medium out - sure it doesn't flicker but no-one complains at the cinemas of flicker which is 24Hz. 50Hz TVs do 25 full frames a second so look a whole lot more natural and don't sludge up movement - THE WORLD HAS GONE MAD!! 100Hz is bleedin' awful on ANY set!

Can I ask, is the hum through the speakers audible when sound is turned off - min, not mute (don't like the mute symbol). I ask as I would be redirecting sound through external digital surround kit.

Saw the 32ZP18P in amongst other widescreen televisions in Dixons. It stood out like a sore thumb (in a good way). I was a little concerned by the comments made here about humming and screen probs, but went back and looked at it again. Still looked incredible.
Finally bought 32ZP18Q, arrived yesterday. Tested all sound, NO hum, checked picture, NO slant. Picture V Bright, will try 35/60/40 as recommended. DVD playback incredible. Sound is good under Dolby 5.1, if not available the Psuedo is good.

Even though I've only had it 1 day, I'm really impressed with the picture, I have never seen anything so crisp and clear and I do not appear to have any of the previous problems. Maybe the 32ZP18Q fixes some of the problems the 'P' one had.
Written on: 14/02/2003
I commented on this set back in October. Since then I have come to accept the hum from the speakers as I don't want to search for another set (Partly because all the other big tellys have speakers stuck on the sode of the screen and look terrible).
Toshiba gave confusing comments on thwe sound problem, depending on who I spoke to. Generally they beleive it is 'within acceptable specification tolerances'. That would be Toshiba's acceptable tollerances then. All i can hope is that enough people complain about the same problem, then a fix might be issued...
However, as a lot of others have commented on this site, the picture quality STILL impresses me and the sound is pretty good for a built-in setup. (I've never had a separate surround kit, so I've nothing to compare).
Please everyone give updates on their progress with Toshiba, if fixes do come to light I would like to hear about them.

I have just purchased a 20" Toshiba Flat Screen TV and have noticed a humming noise from the set. I don't know if it's the tube but with such a small set I wouldn't think I would get a humming noise. My previous cheaper models didn't hum and my larger screen TV doesn't hum either.

I bought this set about 2 months ago after spending months viewing all the alternatives. I am very picky about TV picture quality and with every set I have purchased (mostly Sonys) I have had to have them tweaked or replaced. I was pleasently surprised when I first switched the set on. The picture quality was amazing, particulary on DVDs and strong analogue broadcasts. As is usual after some time I started looking for faults and since nothing is perfect I found some.
1 Slight buzz from set in Cinema mode (not on sound though) not noticable when listening to the TV at normal sound levels.
2 Extreme top of picture (~1cm) slightly streached in 4:3 and Widescreen modes OK in all others. This is only noticible when credits roll up the screen.
3 Slight colour variation at left and right edge of screen - only noticable when a single colour raster is being displayed ie on Freeview orange menu background.
4 Sound quality OK but not a patch on my seperates system.
5 Shows up compression artefacts on Sky and Freeview but this is not the TVs fault.
These imperfections apart I am still delighted with the set. I find myself watching travel and nature programmes I would never have considered watching before simply because of almost photographic quality of the pictures.

I've had mine 3 weeks and am about to get a replacement due to screen tilt. An engineer was due to call but mucked me around so I'm getting a replacement instead. I don't have any humming and hope to G that the new one doesn't either. If it does, it goes back. Simple.

I wrote the original review and am still really pleased with the set. There have been no geometry problems at all. There is some background hum which is only noticeable at night with the sound low. It is dependent upon the aspect ratio of the picture, widescreen is better than cinema (zoom). However, I thought that with a TV of this size running at 100HZ it is inevitable that this will happen. I would actually be interested to know if there are any comparable sets that do not suffer with this. Anyone got any feedback?

Very interesting comments - we had quite decided to buy this TV but am concerned about the humming noise (I am very sensitive to computer hum) and pictures being askew. Would be interested to know if the humming noise has been cured. Is it advisable to buy from a store that arranges for Toshiba to set the TV up?

Well, after a lot of fiddling I have got the TV working as I want it. I was offered an exchange for a new unit but have decided against it. I had a big learning curve with getting the contrast/brightnes/colour set up (tried finding a testcard these days?) and they are now on 35/60/40 which seemed the wrong way to go at first when 50/50/50 seemed far too bright with too much contrast. I've realised that the problems with sky are going to be similar on any large screen TV, but they are less pronounced now I've sorted the contrast/brightness out. It's taken a while but I'm now happy.

I have just got a 36zp18, complete with 1cm picture skew down on the right hand side - engineer on way..... Has Noisemaker got a replacement that is OK? Read in WhatVideo&TV Dec P121 that this is due to Earth's magnetic fields which seems odd. Suspect mine will need to replaced. Like the set, looks much better than the competition. Shame about the fault with this one.

I've had a 32ZP18 for about 24 hours now. Basically I agree with earlier comments, especially about picture quality. DVD is stunning. Absolutely stunning. However Sky is sufficiently poor to make me very frustrated when watching it. Digital artefacts are very noticeable. The 5 year old Philips 28in widescreen that the Toshiba has replaced was actually a lot easier to watch.
Oh and the really bright LED on the front is distracting too.
Having researched the set a little using Google, the picture out of true problem is likely to be misalignment of the coils on the back of the tube - take it back.
It's frustrating that the information in the instruction book is misleading/incorrect regarding the screen ratios and the info about the audio set up is dreadful. Is there a centre speaker in the cabinet or not?

I've just taken ownership of a 32ZP18Q and have almost the same problem. Mine slants from left to right. There's a half centimetre difference in the margin most noticable when watching widescreen and looking at the Sky menus. Also, on the right hand side the frame comes away from the screen. Not much but enough to get a fingernail under. Maybe the tube wasn't fitted correctly during manufacture. If I can't find any more on the internet I'll call the Toshiba helpline and ask them.

A very honest review. I have also made my own review but a day after the review I made, I had noticed a slight problem. The picture is very slightly sloping downwards from right to left.
Has anyone else had this problem?
I'd be really grateful if you could keep us updated on your findings. I have every intention of buying one of these TV's and this is exactly the kind of problem that would drive me up the wall, especially given the amount of cash that gets handed over!
Thanks, Ricky

I bought this set last week, partly based on this and other reviews on the internet, and partly based on the good looks and high spec of the system.
HOWEVER, less than a couple of days of viewing, and I can easily hear a humming noise from the speakers, (NOT FROM THE BACK OF THE TUBE).
This noise gets worse when a brighter image is displayed, and now that I've heard it once, I always hear it. I'm not being over-fussy, but I think when there is silent bit on a movie, then you should hear just that - silence.
Has anyone elese had this problem? I see that a couple of Philips widescreen reviewers have the exact same problems with their sets. I am trying to get a fix from Toshiba at the moment....

I can vouch that this solution works a treat - thanks a bunch for saving me the hassle of getting that TV repairman out.
