“Definately designed for children”

★★★☆☆

written by jackieeaton on 25/07/2016

I am a total Dickens fan and for my birthday I was treated to 2 tickets to Dickensian world!! to be honest it wasn't what I had hoped for as it is defiantly for children and it was really for kids to interact.. the set is great as really does look like you have stepped onto the set of a Christmas Carol and you think Ebenezer Scrooge will come walking round the corner at any moment!!! I think in the past it was amazing but feels a little run down now. I cannot fault the tour guide he was funny and absolutely great with the children .. I wish they would in the future design an adult Dickens world and I would be a happy bunny.

“Very interesting and guide did a good job ”

We enjoyed the guided tour , our guide " Tiny Tim " was excellent he talked to the children and help us feel we had stepped back in time . Just one point if he could slow his speak down a fraction as he talked a little fast we both have a hearing loss I feel it is very educational and helps everyone realise the life and times they had in Dickens that era .

“Great day out.”

★★★★☆

written by on 04/04/2014

We didn't know what to expect when we booked a visit to Dickens World but we had a pleasurable, information packed few hours and we weren't disappointed. It was good value for money, and our tour guide made the experience more enjoyable with details of how it was to live in Victorian Britain, and he really got into character too.

Bad customer service, bad attitude, inability to resolve problems. Spoke to one member of staff who saiid one thing only to turn up and be told something completely different meaning a 3 hour wait for a tour. Spoke to somebody reported to be he manager only for another staff member to tell me the manager wasn't in.. Take you chance, but I won't be again. Best of luck..

“So bad it was funny!”

written by Austindox on 03/12/2012

Went on 24th Nov 2012 to use up some Tesco Days Out tokens that we going out of date. Had no Great Expectations, which was just as well - it was very poor. The set was quite well laid out and obviously cost a great deal to build in the first place. Even the characters walking about added some life to the place although it soon became apparent that they were not just characters but they did everything else as well. The haunted house was closed and one of the characters asked us if we wanted to go in. We thought it might be fun so he opened the doors especially for us and told us to wait in the foyer ostensibly, it seems, so he could go and switch on the various hologram features in the attraction. There were supposed to be live actors in the haunted house but we basically walked through a few dark corridors watched a couple of hologram displays and came out again. The boat ride promised you would get wet, very wet, maybe even soaked. Not quite! Very tired and dated river boat ride through dark scenes which looked as though they could do with some Polyfilla here and there. On reaching the end of the ride there was a queue to get off - surprising really as there was hardly one in the place at all. The actor seeing us safely off the boat was clearly bored out of her skull. She was sat reading a book! It seemed an inconvenience to have to point us towards the exit. We then went into the theatre for a show which was being set up by the same characters we had seen walking around the place earlier. These stagehands then suddenly became the actors although they weren't entrusted to speak for themselves and had to mime to a recorded spoken soundtrack telling the story of Scrooge. It felt like being back at school as we were sat behind Formica dinner tables (no food provided though!) watching a very second rate production that wouldn't have looked out of place if it had been acted out by the local secondary school. In fact I have seen many more enjoyable plays at schools. By this time we found the experience boring and so bad it was funny. There was another show going on in the boatyard but we we rather tersely told in very best Estuary English that a show was going on and it would be another ten minutes before we could go in. Why run a show at the same time as the play? We'd had enough by then so went through the compulsory gift shop with half-empty shelves to get to the exit. I wonder whether the shelves were half empty because people had bought souvenirs to remember the place by or whether they had pinched stuff to sell on ebay to make back some of the entrance fee they had wasted getting in. Do yourselves a favour, don't waste your money, your time or your sanity going to Dickens World. The future for this attraction is not bright unless some serious work is undertaken to improve the customer experience.

“Outstanding Halloween fun ”

★★★★★

written by Sparkly17 on 08/11/2012

Visited during the kids half term week (oct 2012) It was brilliant, the kids dressed up in Halloween fancy dress and were admitted free of charge, which was part of the Halloween festivities. There was a street theatre show about to start as we arrived, which was very good, it was A Christmas Carol, the children then after the show were entered in to a Halloween fancy dress competition. There was a pumpkin trail which when completed the kids all got a sweet each. There were Halloween arts & crafts whereby the kids made halloween badges, masks etc. Everything was clear on the website before we arrived, the price was good, the value for money was excellent. We will be returning again this year for their Winter Wonderland and pantomime.

“A second time visitor - the truth!!!!”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 04/11/2012

My family and I visited Dickens World about 4 years ago – and were wowed by it – it was truly lovely. Unfortunately, my husband couldn't go that day due to ill health so with the family and I ranting and raving about it – yesterday we decided to visit again (it would have been sooner but we live 60 miles away and of course it isn't cheap to get in. I checked the website before we left and saw that there would be Halloween activities (up until today the 4th actually) – with free entry for our 2 kids dressed in Halloween costume (even cheaper entry ) So we get there – get in at a reduced price – as the Britannia Theatre isn't working - - couldn't really say no after promising the kids a day out, so in we go. My husbands first impressions at the scenery were WOW – it’s like Disney – but it turned out very different. Haunted House – some of the effects weren't working and no member of staff around at all. The School House – the interactive screens were broken and not working – no member of staff (teacher) visited as apparently they had been sent to jail. 4D Magic Lantern Show – wasn't even in 3d – I mentioned this to the member of staff and she said it hadn't been 3d for years (after talking to another member of staff, it turns out you need to replace a bulb for the 3d effect to work!!!!!!!!!!!!). No Halloween activities at all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! No pumpkin trail, no arts and crafts as the boxes couldn't be found – and the Halloween fancy dress only went on because we reminded the staff (and was won by a toddler wearing a minnie mouse dress!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! – lots of kids went to the trouble of dressing up for Halloween and must have been disappointed). On top of that upstairs toilets were out of order. Children's play area was filthy around the edges – dirt under the climbing frames (so not today’s dirt). The Boat ride was the best bit – but you could see the lack of maintenance – banks at the side crumbling into the water showing the metal mesh structure underneath. Apparently, it was closed for filming on Friday – so to a member of public – Dickens World likes taking the money in – but appears to have spent little since it first opened.

The 4d show hasnt been working for months (the 3d machine is broken) - although the video is still played in 2d.
The theatre isn't working - and Dickens world couldn't say when it would be.
The interactive screens are broken in the school house and have been for months.

So there are ongoing problems at Dickens world. First time visitors or ones that didn't visit when it first opened don't realise how many things aren't working - it was such a disappointment :-(

“What a load of old Dickensian pants. ”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Jtop on 06/04/2012

Interesting to see the last review of this place is dated August last year. We went the other day and it has not improved. It is exactly as described in the previous review. The staff looked mostly embarrassed, which is entirely understandable. There was a performance of A Christmas Carol which was very unenthusiatically mimed by a few bored looking employees. There was some kind of haunted house which consisted of dimly lit corridors and displays of chairs, with recorded voices muttering at random intervals. There was a poor excuse for a ride which consisted of 5 minutes of floating around in the dark in a boat and at one point getting soaked when the boat drops down a slope. There were random dummies in display cases. One consisted of a head on a stick. (What? Why?). The most puzzling part is that there is absolutely no information about Dickens or how any of the "displays" are related to him or even to Victorian times generally. The only informative bit was a "4D" (which means 3D plus you get drops of water spat at you at appropriate moments) animated film which lasted about 10 minutes. This was without doubt the most useless excuse for a tourist attraction I have ever seen. And they have the nerve to make you pay to go in ! If you want to see some interesting Dickens related displays go to the Guildhall Museum in Rochester which is free.

“Absolutely terrible. Don't waste your money.”

written by CravingDarkness on 14/08/2011

The title to this says it all. I had high expectations for Dickens World and had wanted to go for ages, so I used my sisters 14th birthday as an excuse to drag her and my fiancée there. They weren't too interested in all things Dickens, but they were willing to go because I had told them how amazing it would be. How wrong I was. If I could have given this review no stars, I would have. It was that bad. First off, we walked up to the building and saw two members of staff just leaning against the doors, making us feel uncomfortable as we had to manoeuvre past them just to get in. We weren't even greeted by the man on reception, who waited for us to tell him what tickets we needed. After paying (which was a whopping £34 for just three of us!), the man didn't even tell us what events might be on, or explain to us about show times. He simply pointed at the stairs and told us to go that way. I'll admit; I was impressed by the decor of this place. You can certainly see that a lot of money, time and effort was put into the construction and design, it did look very realistic. It was just a shame that when we finally made it to the court yard, there was no one there. We didn't see one actor, at least, not until we looked at one of the shops, which was full of them sitting down and chatting away. The costumes were not at all realistic, with them wearing mostly modern clothing and jewellery, as well as getting out their mobile phones casually. Not once did an actor come out and try to pretend we were back in the Victorian age. It really irritated me. What also made this place worse was the fact there was no real set course for you to take. You are sort of left staring at some cartoon map and trying to work out where to go to first. We headed to the 'haunted man' house which I think was supposed to be scary. All we saw was a few chairs lighted up to make shadows, some random noises, paintings with the eyes cut out and terrible footage shown on some fabric to try and make it look like there were ghosts. It was all extremely fake and not in the least scary. You couldn't even hear whatever the 'ghosts' were supposed to be telling you because the audio was so bad. My sister and fiancée are still trying to work out why there was a load of lit up chairs. After the disappointment of the house, we headed to the school room, only to find it empty. I'd read online that there was supposed to be a school teacher in there who taught you facts about Dickens, but he was nowhere to be found. We headed upstairs, and went into the Britannia Theatre, hoping for some kind of decent entertainment from something that cost £64 million to build. Once again, we were very disappointed. It was a clever idea to use life-like robots, but it was poorly executed. Many people left the theatre after ten minutes it was that boring. My fiancée fell asleep and my sister kept looking at me and asking how much longer we had to suffer this. The show had no real structure to it, and it didn't make much sense. I was glad when it was over. Ever the optimist, I forced my fiancée and sister to stay for the showing of Oliver in the main courtyard. I was excited about seeing what these actors were saving all their energy for, considering they were still gathered in one shop, ignoring everyone. We took a seat on at one of the large tables with a drink (which were £1 a can or bottle!) and waited for the show to begin. It took them a ridiculously long time to set up, especially since all the props were already there and all they had to do was tie some rope around the makeshift stage, and once again they gathered in the middle to have another conversation before finally starting; apparently these guys don't get any other time to chat. When the show finally started, which was completely mimed, my heart sank. They rushed through the tale of Oliver, with actors who must not have rehearsed this, seeing as they kept miming their lines wrong or moving to the wrong places at the wrong time. One girl even pretended to knock on a door, with the sound effects coming about two minutes later. It was a shambles. The actors they picked for each part was just as terrible too. They had young girls playing Oliver and Dodger, which is a usual choice, so I had no problems with that. What put me off was having a severely overweight, terrible actor taking the role of Nancy, who wasn’t even wearing clothes suited to that period. It certainly put me off watching it, even if I stayed there till the end. The man playing Fagin had to remind the audience to clap at the end, which was responded to with a half-hearted clap from all of us. The boat ride was okay, although I couldn’t really see much of the scenery we were being taken around because of the large headrests on the boats. It was too dark to see much anyway; apparently the sun hadn’t been invented during Charles Dickens time. It was after the boat ride that we left, having spent a grand total of two hours there. There was nothing else to see by what we could tell, having wandered aimlessly around the courtyard again to double check. We left glad to be out of that place, and headed straight home. Let’s just say it was a disappointing birthday for my sister, and a huge disappointment for me, who has a real love of Dickens. If he was alive today, he’d have been embarrassed by what these people have done to his novels. Everything was overpriced, tacky, and an insult to the man who they are now using to con people out of their money. I just hope it either improves or closes down as soon as possible. DON’T WASTE YOUR MONEY!

Larissaalbum's Response to CravingDarkness's Review

We have just visited Dickens World yeterday (26th August 2012), and cannot understand the bad reviews, we were there for approx 4 and half hours. We found all the staff friendly and helpful and in character at all times. The theatre show was well presented, as was the boat ride. All the scenery and decore was well done and had obviously had a lot of time and money spent on it. The actors presentation of Oliver Twist was a little amature, but at the end of the day they are not top actors and it still told the story well. We did not think it was over priced, we even had lunch in the pub in there which was reasonable for a tourist attraction. We would definately recommend it.

Please don't waste your money. Whatever you are expecting, Dickens world will fail to impress you. Looks like a good set when you enter the "courtyard", but this is as good as it gets. All alleyways lead to fire exits, there is really nothing to do and there is certainly nothing to enhance your understanding of Dickens and his works. Good points? It is easy to find the exit.

I took my family as part of the Dickens Festival down in Rochester. We got a money off coupon and we had a very nice time visiting Dickens World. My child was thoroughly entertained by the boat ride and the circus which was only £2 extra was brilliant. I will be going back and I would recommend.

Absolutely rubbish. Won tickets to this as part of the Big Kent Weekend and so grateful that we didn't pay. I was expecting old buildings to look at and enter and set up in Dickensian times, alley ways to walk through that lead someone, not bare walls to a fire exit. The boat ride is a waste of space, the space could be used for something so much better! Why did all the teenage actors have large plastic noses?

DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY!

No, I was not expecting a theme park. Yes, I was expecting that the place would celebrate the work of the great man.
To say I and my party were disappointed would be an understatement. A truly miserable experience at a venue that does not seem to know what it wants to be.
The glowing review preceding mine must have been written by the manager.

“Me and my beloved wife, R.H.Atkinson have thoroughly...”

★★★★★

written by on 09/03/2011

Me and my beloved wife, R.H.Atkinson have thoroughly enjoyed reading a lot of Charles Dickens literature in our own spare time. With this in mind, we heard about Dickens World online via a Charles Dickens related online website. As soon as we found time out of our, quite frankly, hectic schedule, we booked a trip to The Dickens World. We successfully managed to book a highly affordable stay at the local Travelodge. This provided beautiful scenic views of the local river Medway.

Upon arriving to The Dickens World after our 5 hour car journey, we managed to finally begin exploring The Dickens World.

The first thing that myself and Mrs. R.H.Atkinson did was walk up the stairs, which Mrs. R.H.Atkinson struggled with as she has a prosthetic leg. However, the Victorian staff members at The Dickens World were very accommodating in all of our needs, and after suggesting that they carried her personally, we used the elevator that was adjacent to the staircase entrance. Silly Mrs. R.H.Atkinson missing that!

After being plunged, both physically and emotionally, into the Victorian setting that is found within The Dickens World, we headed toward The Great Expectations log-flume boat-ride at The Dickens World. The journey is truly magical, beautiful scents can be found throughout the ride. Magical.

Here our journey came to an abrupt close, as Mrs. R.H.Atkinson had forgotten to lock the front door to our humble abode. We swiftly gave our condolences to the Victorian staff members, and left The Dickens World.

A truly magical setting in true Victorian character. Mr. Charles Dickens would be proud himself.

Mr. & Mrs. Atkinson

I truly believe that this review is almost outstanding as The Dickens World itself in my full honest opinion. It has definately convinced me, Robert Charles Thompson, to visit the splendid place for the ninth time. Yes, you read correctly, ninth.

Thank you very much for this very honest and detailed tale of events. I am almost definately sure that Charles Dickens himself would say the same. God rest his soul.

Thank you again. Thank you. Truly grateful. Thank you.

Further to my comment on this review I and my boyfriend visited this attraction. The staff were very helpful and offered me assitance, as I have lost my left leg and use crutches, when they thought I needed it. That disappointed my boyfriend as he likes to help me. If you're disabled, don't worry about a visit.

“It was the Worst of times... It was the worst of times!!! ”

written by nickylamb on 22/02/2011

It was the Worst of times... It was the worst of times!!!
A huge disappointment for any age. Clever Dickensian Buildings and layout... and that's about it..

The staff and 'actors' were pleasant enough, though I had a bad feeling when we walked in and were confronted with a lass in a 'Nancy' type dress, leaning obviously very bored, against a barrel and not meeting anyone's eyes!

There was a hugely embarrassing abridged 'production' of' A Christmas Carol'. Which involved 'actors' moving around, miming to a recorded PA talkover, while gesticulating weakly. I was so embarrassed for them I spent most of the time with a sickly grin on my face while staring at the floor.
After this hideous show we thought we'd explore the upper level... long empty corridors with the odd speaker transmitting Dickensian type voices (with very 21st c. accents) the odd plasticky wooden beam and all leading nowhere! A pub, a gift shop and the entrance to the movie attraction (which we decided to give a miss I'm afraid, so can't comment on it).

The boat 'ride' through Old London Town was boring, uninspiring, unimaginative and once again embarrassing. I cringe when I think of foreign visitors coming to this 'attraction' (I use the term loosely).. It reflects very poorly on British invention and entertainment; Quite good sets of buildings and a cemetery but all completely empty of anything except about 3 bad and unmoving figures, an opening coffin lid and the odd audio quote from a Dickens story... Oh... there was a chimney sweep dummy popping his head out of a chimney.. A highlight I'm sure.. but I missed it.
Even the warning about getting wet was a let down... I think I may have felt a couple of drops on my left hand, but I could be mistaken. (Other members of the family did get nearly a cupful over them though).

The haunted house exhibit was short, boring and samey and had a poor embarrassed member of staff running around to 'scare' people, with his head (thankfully-for us and him) covered with a sack, with holes cut out for his eyes.

Overall, my family and I found it quite amusing in its awfulness! Lucky really, considering we had got up at the crack of dawn for a coachride all the way from Watford that morning. Thank goodness for a very amusing coach driver who made the journey there and back friendly and fun... Ten out of Ten for Reynolds Coaches of Watford.. Zero out of ten for 'Dickens World'.. I would imagine that the great man is probably turning in his grave as I type!!

“We saw the mixed reviews before we went but based on...”

★★☆☆☆

written by Scott V on 07/02/2011

We saw the mixed reviews before we went but based on positive comments from friends who have been we thought we would give it a go. Unfortunately I think the reviews pretty much summed it up - on balance it is OK, at best.

We didn't think it overly expensive but it cost a tad more than what we would have expected. Our girls (aged 7 & 4) were initially quite intimidated by the gloominess and general spooky feeling but one of the characters took time to chat to the girls, get them comfortable and show them the play area which they loved. Credit to the staff for trying so hard.

The ride was a diappointment, fortunately there was no queue as the ride certainly wasn't worth waiting for. A (almost painfully) slow meander through some dingy buildings with very little effects of any kind and one drop.

The animatronic & 4D shows were quite good, but the former lacked atmosphere with only about 15 people in the theatre. As our 7 year old pointed out though there were only 3 robotos in the animatronic show and the rest were projections.

The street theatre was quite embarassing to watch. Why they have to mime I do not know and the 'compere' in his bad taste jumper under a gold waistcoat (typical Victorian dress?) when he played Scrooge was a sight to behold - am dram at its worst. It was also a bit of a surprise to see him smoking outside the main entrance when we arrived!

The staff try their hardest and are very enthusiastic, but some more characters to generate some atmosphere - in the square, a teacher in the school room, a shop keeper in the grocery for example - this could be better. Based on the attendance the day we went however it is difficult to see they would ever generate enough money to invest in the business.
