My Rover Metro is a brilliant little car! I learnt to drive in mine, and now I'm looking for a newer one the same. I've had some fun in this car - left a BMW boy racer miles behind at lights once when I had 3 passengers - the look on his face was a picture! Would recommend this car to anyone.
Starts first time every time and is very comfortable to drive....

The Rover Metro (A series) is a great little car. Great for anyone learning to drive. Great handling and suspension. Steering nice and light. Engine starts first time. Can be a little on the slow side....

I own a Rover Metro 1.4 SL. It is a likeable car as are most Metros, however I would say it has more bad points than good.

The 1.4 model Metro is very quick due to it's low low gearing. It is fun, it has fair handling and a nice feel to it.

I have only owned one of these cars, I've had it for just over 6 months. I'm not sure if mine is just bloody awful or if all of them are like it. Here are a few points I have noticed about the car.

1. The Metro is a small car so Rover have weaved all the components together making it very difficult to do any major work on the car.

2. The Hydrogas suspension system is very rare in a car as modern as this, and is expensive and annoying to work with. I have to ask... FOR WHAT?! Hydrogas doesn't have any real good points to it. Other, simpler forms of suspension (such as the strut suspension employed by the fiesta) produce similar or better performance, and they're much simpler to work with.

3. The car has many weak points. Such as some barings and seals and electrics. All the Metro's welcome rust in hard to reach areas like under the window seals, subframes and especially on the sills. I know other cars suffer from this problem also I am just pointing it out. Beware the clutches in these cars, they are quite small and weak so do not hammer your Metro!

4. Parts are important for any old car however Metro parts are amazingly expensive. A new centeral locking motor (a simple and weak bit of equipment) can set you back around £60. The best approach to parts is scrap yards. Metros are common as muck so finding a scrap one souldn't present too much of a problem. It is a useful point that many of the Austin Metro parts will fit the Rovers as they are often the same or very similar.

The cars are often cheap, but for a good reason. If you are intending to buy one make sure you take a very good look at it before buying. I don't want to put anyone off too much... I quite like Metros!

I disagree as the Metro is one of the easiest cars to work on and parts are very cheap. The suspension my need pumping up if the ride is beconing a little rough and this set me back all of £10 :D

Yeh I apologize for that review on the Metro. Although they can suffer from all those problems so what? They're tydy little cars and they're excellent to play with. You must remember all Metro's are getting on a bit.
I have fixed up mine now and it's good as gold! I'd recommend Metro's to anyone especially new drivers. They're cheep and fun so get one!!!

I bought my 1.1c rover metro new in 1990. My two sons have gave it a hard time learning to drive in it and it has been in daily use. I have changed the oil regularly, had 2 hydrogas pump ups at £20 each, and fingers crossed nothing else has ever gone wrong. Whereas my new VW has overtaken it with electric window fails etc etc. Its not fast/its not a puller but its a reliable and cheap to run town car.

METRO 1.1 K PLATE
love it, as only a metro owner could, had one a few years ago till some spanish lorry driver drove his trailer over the back and flattend it, no point claiming for it just wrote it off. Spent some time in the wilderness but bingo got another, bright red/bought my old mg alloys back after 2 years took some tracking down but got them back for £40, paid a pound for a tiny white leather 3 spoke steering wheel from car boot.
Lowerd the back seats and use it every day for work loaded up with tools(building)like to look at peoples faces when I turn up on site and how much I get in it and better still the look on peoples faces when I leave them for stood round bends and traffic islands. People now call it my gocart that sticks like glue - who says driving couldnt be cheap and fun - if I pass you in sheffield give us a honk. I also have another car but i never use it its not flash its only a merc no fun happy motering
