Good Points: Looks (and feels) like a piece of very best quality home equipment
Chunky and surprisingly heavy to lift, but the bespoke aluminium look suggests it is something very special, rather than a product for the masses

Bad Points: Stunning failure rate. Expect months rather than years of service. It's a fair bet that by now most remaining DVD-R1000's don't actually work.
    Unnecessarily heavy box.
Dreadful - truly awful software/firmware problems.
Quickly orphaned by Philips, whose service agents charge so much to repair the DVD-R1000 that the only sensible course is to buy a brand new machine.

General comments: What can I say that hasn't been said already about the Philips DVD-R1000 DVD recorder? Mine lasted over a year (lucky?), with relatively moderate use. It kept failing to record, and then it would shut down totally, with just an error code showing on the screen, and therefore trapping the DVD+RW disk inside.

From the outset there were intermittent problems with video + programming. The Philips DVD R1000 DVD Recorder worked one day and not the next. Then it would not awake from standby mode. None of the keys worked. Unplugging and reconnecting did not engage diagnostics as specified in the manual. When diagnostics finished (and passed) the unit hung and would not accept keyed commands. Various error messages displayed, keys unresponsive, restarted in virgin mode, but all the above problems reoccurred ...

My Philips DVD R1000 DVD Recorder developed intermittent faults, error messages - lock up - not recognising blank disks, approx 12 months after purchase. Completely failed 2 months latter - would not read any DVD's. Have just been advised by an authorised Phillips repair centre that it is un-repairable (not worth spending the money needed).

This DVD recorder was very good for the first 2 months, but soon developed multiple problems, including disc warnings, disc errors, and not being able to read discs with movies, ie.
"NO DISC" and "EMPTY DISC" messages.
It managed to corrupt a number of my discs.
Overall, just not robust or reliable enough.

I bought one of these Philips DVD-R1000 players/recorders and have had it for a while now. Everytime i use it, i get more and more convinced that this is the way DVD should be!
When inserting a DVD+RW media, you get a menu, with chapters and "thumbnails" of your recordings. Let's say that you've recorded Startrek, and after that you've recorded 2 episodes of Friends, then you get a DVD menu containing these 3 items. And best of all, when taking this DVD+RW media with you to your parents old ...
