Good Points: They are great dogs for a family setting, but can be clumsy (depending on the dog). I have a severely handicapped child, and I have rescued 7 Great Danes. The only one that gets clumsy is one of our current Great Danes, who happens to be deaf. They can knock small children down, so you have to correct on the spot, and never train them to jump up on you, even if you think it is cute.

Bad Points: They are prone to BLOAT, which can happen to all large breed dogs. I have had 2 of my Danes bloat, which can be deadly within just a couple of hours. I was able to save one, but not the other. It can be VERY expensive, so the best preventative is to get the stomach tack surgery when you get them spayed or neutered, to help prevent this.

They can also be expensive in maintenance in general, and heart-worm meds etc. are a lot more for such a large dog, so considering all this is a good plan before buying a Dane; that, and having Sane experience. The puppies can be very hyper, but I have noticed almost all Sanes over 1 year seem to mellow out by then.

They can can be prone to bone cancer and hip dysplasia etc. Do a Google search for Great Dane rescue, and a lot of the pros and cons and info will come up.

General comments: I have been rescuing Great Danes for several years now, and I love the breed, but I have paid many medical bills. They aren't as easy to care for as most breeds, and they are prone to needing vet care more then the average dog, so I would say overall higher maintenance. But in love and affection they have so much to give. I currently have 2 Great Danes, and considering a third.

Rachael my Great Dane was 18 months old when I saw her advertised in a London evening newspaper. She had suffered five owners; was kept permanently locked in a shed; and had been declared "unmanageable." I made the mistake of introducing her to my alsation Sally in my home (always introduce dogs on neutral territory) and Sally, normally a docile dog, immediately attacked her. Nevertheless I kept her. The first week or two was very difficult on us (both for me and Rachael) as I regularly brutal ...

Overall, a great dog! It will need frequent exercise to keep its huge muscular shape in good condition.
