Good Points: Very placid, happy, easy-going dog, with a lovely temperament. Good with other dogs and excellent with children.
Bad Points: Keep an eye on their diet, otherwise they'll eat far too much. House-breaking takes a lot of patience at the beginning.
General comments: The Bassett Hound is a great breed for a family with an average amount of time to spend on training and walking. I found that our Bassett has given us endless laughs, with her curious and slightly (what seems like) dopey behaviour. She gets a huge amount of attention when we take her for walks, and she loves socialising. She loves children (even if we don't have any of our own), other dogs, and she is happy to be held, spoken to and played with by anybody who is interested. She was a little harder to house-break, but once she got the hang of it she became utterly proud of herself.

I know Bassett Hounds are supposed to bay, but my Leela is 9 months old and has only barked one woof! She has a deep voice, but she tends to be more animated physically than vocally.
She enjoys long walks, but if you don't get round to it for one day she is happy to give it a skip. During teething she did chew a lot of things, but giving her the correct chewy bones, which you can get from the vet or good pet shops, that stopped quickly.
Leela is a cuddly dog, and she considers herself a lapdog. She loves to bound around, then flop to the ground; and when she's sleepy, she'll cuddle up next to my feet asking to be picked up. I usually sit on the floor with her, and within a minute or two she'll be sound asleep.
Leela's best doggy-friends are Staffies, Rottweilers, Springer Spaniels and Bearded Collies. She tends to be a little boisterous for the smaller breeds, and she loves the challenge these bigger/tougher breeds have to offer.
