Good Points: Great companion. Great with kids and other dogs, although needs to be socialised at young age just like any other dog. Nice size dog too (20kg or so), so doesn't take up as much room as a Lab, etc but also not a 'toy' or 'lap dog'.

Bad Points: Not really a bad point (as we walk a lot) but needs lots of exercise. Loves mud / water so always have a towel ready at the end of a walk.

General comments: We love our 1 year old Springer. His name is Daniel (The Spaniel). We just call him Dan. We have great fun walking him or cycling and he runs around like a nutter! He has 2 walks a day (and needs it) - 1 hour in the morning and another 1 in the evening - although he'd go all day if you let him. Always finds water / mud and generally rolls around in it.

I don't know if it is just a certain line of springers but this line is not at all what the standard depicts as far as temperaments. Eager to please??? who? themselves? I have never seen so much money spent on training as with this breed. At breeding kennels they can not even be excersized together because they fight constantly and if people think other breeds are yappy they have not had the not so nice experience of living with someone who breeds these dogs. They NEVER shut up. They are excersi ...

I'm looking around for another springer puppy or very young adult mainly with lots of liver as the predominant colour. Dew clipped with a docked tail. if we get a bitch its our intention to have her spayed. As we have little money we can only go up to £200. I'm on early retirement and my partner soon will be. Springers have been part (24) years of our lives. You have to be careful with them don't take them for granted like i did. Penny was in her outside kennel one summer night and ...

This is my first ESS! Besides my wife she is the love of my life. Sometimes I feel like she knows exactly what I want. She has slept in bed with us since we got her at 8 weeks. One of her favorite things to do is ride in the car. She is one of the best friends I've ever had.

I love Springers. I've now got my second one, having first owned a springer as a teenager, and having spent a few dogless years in between. They're wonderful dogs. Smart, affectionate and the clowns of the dog world.
That sharp mind loves playing games, mine loves retrieving, and is ace at hunting out toys that have been hidden. Now he's older he's also started to learn to do controlled retrieves and is enjoying that as well.
They love mud and water, so perhaps not the best pet for a house-prou ...

My English Springer Spaniel is extremely loyal, happy, friendly with other dogs, excellent with puppies and children. My dog spent an idyllic five years from the age of four months, living with me in a boy's boarding house! A dear friend, Ted is now 15, although arthritic, his mind is still very active.
On a good, warm day, he likes a game of 'footie'.

I've owned English Springer Spaniels as pets and worked springers for well over 30 years.

I've worked them as detection dogs, and as working gundogs, their original use.

I would go against the grain of other reviews here and say that they are not necessarily good pets, they are very intelligent and do need to use their brains, if not used they can become bored, destructive and a real pain to own.

The solution to this is good training and firm handling, if you say no you must mean no and ...

We are now raising Spaniel #2 (Lord Winslow) and #3 (Sir Theodore Usidae).
We started 12 years ago with "Fugly the Wonder Spaniel," a liver and white Springer, and he is sorely missed (sits in an urn on our dresser). He had problems with his ears and allergy eyes, but so lovable! Did I say smart? WOW! This dog knew your intentions well before you did!

Brad Johnson ("Marmaduke") wrote him up once at the end of the strip, how Fuggles loved to go for ice cream cones. At the mere mention of ...

Springer Spaniels are not just good for sniffing out drugs and suspect packages, although this proves their intelligence and high sense of smell. They love playing and can go on for ever, they are very friendly but can bark if they feel their owner is threatened, but would never attack or show aggression unless encouraged to. They also will stay by your side no matter what happens, they are so loyal and loving towards the members in the house hold. I would really recommend this breed.

I acquired my English Springer Spaniel after hearing that the dog was going to be shot if nobody wanted him. His history briefly comprises of being lost on the beach, taken to the dog's home where one lady picked him up. On realising she couldn't control him she gave him to her dad who had two elderly 'push button' collies. Needless to say Jud didn't fit in, and so I said I'd have him.
Admittedly I had problems with him when I had him, due to the fact he had received no training at all (he was ...

The English Springer Spaniel is a great dog for the active family or person, they absolutely love walks. Although they are quite small they have a big attitude, they are funny and very friendly dogs that enjoy attention and cuddles. A perfect pet and great friend.
