Good Points: -Dual Core -With the right stepping can be an amazing overclocker -Ebay for a great price as no longer sold by vendors as new -Low heat emissions make for a great performer
Bad Points: -Defunct socket 939 now
General comments: Having used a 165 Dual core Opteron now for almost 2 years, it has been the most reliable chip I have found to date. The opteron lineup is the pinnacle of AMD's processor family, if an Opteron chip fails its quality controls and doesnt fall into a specific Opteron variety then it is rebadged as an Athlon FX, that tells you a lot about the quality of these chips.
Opteron struggled to go mainstream due to lack of marketing and high prices as the Opty never really had a bargain basement lineup. After the145 single core took off, power users started looking for the best stepping OPterons for their well publicised overclocking ability. Currently my CCBWE stepping Opteron peaks at 2.75ghz on water cooling, almost a full 1ghz overclock for free!
Very powerful in their day, these are trounced now by Core 2 Duo's and Quads but if you have a spare socket 939 board and fancy a spare rig then I can highly commend the Opteron 165 to give you a serious power boost!
