This cleaner picks up well, is easier to lug around than a Dyson BUT be carefull if you accidently go over the cable! Instead of just sucking it up a little it will mash the cable in an instant leaving it bare and presumably dangerous. Had mine a month and this is the first time it happened. I guess I may need to get the cable replaced at least and don't think it's covered by warranty.

I will start by saying this is not my vacuum - it is my Grandparent's. However they are getting less physically able and since they live on the same estate, I usually end up vacuuming for them when I go around. The build quality of this machine is fantastic. It is built from tough ABS and feels just as robust as my old faithful Dyson DC04. It has a nice colour scheme of black and silver. However the black is glossy and attracts scratches very quickly (like a Numatic Henry's hat). The suction is quite strong on this machine, and it will lose suction as the bags get more full, but there's always enough there to pick up visible dirt. However, it isn't as strong as my DC04. When they were away I brought my DC04 down to really deep clean their house. I filled the 3l dust canister twice on each floor. I only vacuumed with the Sebo a week before! They are not dirty people. They have an average sized 3 bedroom detached house. The brush roll however, is very good at lifting the carpet, and I like the computer controlled height adjust. It is far more accurate than the Dyson's auto adjusting cleaner head. I also like that Sebo guarantee the drive belt for the lifetime of the machine. I like how the machine will shut off if you run over something like a sock with the brush roller. I like that the machine will also turn itself off if there is a clog/bag split/full. The dust bags last a long time, but is that really a good thing? In my opinion no. If the Dyson could pick up so much more than the Sebo, then clearly it is not picking up enough. I like that the machine can lie flat to the floor to go under beds and furniture - this is when the brush roller shut off function is useful, as I sometimes pick up a sock or the tassels on the sofa! I also like that the machine glides very well on carpet and hard floor, yet still grooms the carpet far better than the Dyson. If the Dyson could groom the carpet like that, It would be an almost perfect machine! It picks up very well on hard floor, especially since you can't turn of the brush roller. It is also quite light considering its size much lighter than the 9kg Sebo BS 46 which I have used as well. Now onto the filtration and bags. The filtration is indeed excellent, and filters out everything the machine picks up. You also don't need to change the filters very much (about every 2 years) however it is still nice to have the washable Dyson ones though for me! NEVER attempt to wash these filters, as it will ruin them. The bags however are paper and are quite flimsy. If Sebo switched to random-spun fiber bags, they could probably increase the motor power, and the bags wouldn't split like paper ones. This is one of the reasons the suction on the Sebo isn't that great - the motor power is only 1300w. This isn't that great for a machine that isn't cyclonic. The tool storage design is good for the crevice and upholstery tools - having them stored on the body of the machine. It would have been nice to have them higher up though, so there's less bending down. However the design for storage for the dusting brush could use some improvement - it clips onto the handle. The fact that it doesn't even come with the machine as standard is very poor for a machine of this price. The hose is my main gripe about this machine. This is why I knocked off a star, as it is very important to my vacuuming needs. It attaches to the top of the cleaner, so when you are using it the machine either follows you around or falls over. This has given me a few injuries and has killed an expensive ornament - not good! I also do not like the fact that the hose is not very flexible at all, even though it is designed to stretch a bit. This means it is extremely short. So if you want to clean stairs or the car, you have to buy the optional extension hose - which is another £20. It is quite tough though, and I feel it will last a while. When using the extension hose, the cleaner has a much bigger reach - but is sways side to side as you clean stairs. I do like the hose is a lot easier to get out than the Dyson. However it doesn't join as well as the Dyson, do the air leaks out of there the wand connects to the hose - Miele's design is much better, and they also incorporated a stretch hose. As far as carry handles go, this machine has some in all the right places. It also has a nice long 10m cord - an improvement of the 7.5m on my Dyson. All in all I would recommend this machine as a vacuum for a bungalow or large areas of flat carpet with no stairs ( a commercial cleaning business would like a vacuum like this.) However if you suffer from allergies (this machine just doesn't have strong enough suction) or have stairs, or want the option to turn of the brush roller, or just want stronger suction, try the Miele S7 series. They are rather heavy though. If you like bagless, consider a refurbished Dyson DC04 or one of the newer Dysons.

I had an old Vax (Big orange and black cylinder) for years and it did the job but the Vax went on loan to child moving out and never came back so we bought a Miele two years ago (husbands choice) and very good it was too until same child hoovered out his car full of water with it! So we bought an upright Electrolux Vittessse pet lover for me and a Vax performance cylinder for him. Both have given up the ghost within the last year. Well I don't really like hovering but when I do I want something that works. After looking at the reviews I decided to buy the Sebo automatic X4 extra, it was delivered today and after 30 minutes putting it together I was away. What bliss, something that sucks up dirt, bits of Christmas debris, plastic stuff from grandchildren's toys, black sock fluff imbedded into bedroom carpet, feathers from duster and goes over rugs and hard floors without me having to play around with dials. Wow! I read a review about the weight but it wasn't an issue with me.

I've had a number of vacuum cleaners in my time but this beats the lot. Originally looking at Dyson but then I noticed in my local vacuum repair shop that the cleaners, waiting to be collected by their owners following repairs, were predominently yellow, i.e. Dyson, This worried me!
Following looking at detailed reviews the Sebo X4 seemed to satisfy my requirements. I am not disappointed. Two years on and it is functioning as new. OK, it's a bagged cleaner and the bags aren't cheap but it misses nothing on its pick-up job. I do notice that it takes a while for dust to collect on flat surfaces and I am convinced that this is because the filter and capture system is first class. Since buying a Sebo, I have noticed that around colleges, in hospitals and on my recent cruise, the cleaning staff all used Sebo's. This speaks for itself in my opinion.

Simple but dated design, but hey, its a hoover and it does the job i bought it for everytime i get it out. The tools are in the right place, it's not that heavy, Its got a powerful pick up and a long cord, and hidden tech other only dream of having. Yes it has a bag you have to throw out but i don't get covered in dust when i empty it outside like the bagless ones. So if you want to have your hoover as a display feature or even cool when your strutting your stuff about the carpet, this is not the hoover for you. If you want a hoover that's sturdy built to last and cleans your house buy a sebo.

The Sebo x4 vacuum cleaner has great suction - even pet hair. I've had several different makes over the years and have hated every one of them. I wondered which next one to buy and looked through this website and decided on a Sebo. I've never looked back - I love it. It has great suction, goes flat under furniture, has a 5 litre bag so only needs emptying once in a while. It has a long nozzle so reaches the top of the stairs. I honestly can't think of anything bad about it - I'm glad I've spent the money on one.

Great performance from my Sebo x4, ease of use and weight. I used to have a Dyson DC05, but found the claimed 'no loss of suction' to be untrue, so ditched this for the Sebo. I'd never heard of them before I went to buy another vacuum and was impressed with the specs and recommendation of this above, Vax, Dyson, Panasonic, Bissel, Hoover and Mele, despite some of the other costing more. What did it for me was the fact that the shop owners used both domestic and commercial Sebo's for home and work. From the short time of ownership and use I've put it to I would thoroughly recommend this to anyone

Just dumped two Dysons - my new Svo X4 is great. Light and easy to use. Good suction and all the extra you need. Do not think about it just go and buy one now!

We moved house and were ready to replace the Dyson we bought ten years ago. I had a look at reviews of Dyson's, and found they were not well rated. By chance I came across a reference to the Sebo, which was very well reviewed anywhere I looked. OK, it was not cheap, but it is self propelled, and the brush is self adjusting.
The Sebo x4 is very much a traditional vacuum cleaner, and it has a bag, but that is not a bad thing. It makes no style pretensions, but it oozes quality. It cleans our wood floors, vinyl, car interiors and carpets equally well, and it is also good at getting the remains of the ash out of the grate when we have had the fire lit.
I have not rated service as we have not had to use it.
The Sebo is very much to be recommended.

I have had this Sebo machine for a little over a month now and, while I think it's pretty good in most respects, it disappoints when running over small rugs as it tends to snatch the material into the roller. The ability to reduce the vacuum power, as found on some other machines, would cure the problem.
As accessories, I bought the turbo brush and long hose which makes stair cleaning very easy. Those are worthwhile extras.
Unlike other contributors, I take issue with the noise level. The machine is far noisier than my Miele which, I am bound to say, is a superior cleaner in any case. The Miele developed a fault recently and my wife doesn't like dragging a cylinder cleaner round so we opted for an upright, hence the Sebo. When I looked at the Miele, I was able to fix it in 5 minutes and it's working fine!
Having said that, as upright vacs go, I do think the Sebo is as good as one will find although it is prone to toppling over while using the on-board wand. It's certainly better than my old Dyson which I gave to my son who is going to replace that, probably with a Miele, as he thinks they're the nuts!
Can somebody please tell me how Dyson gets away with it? His machines are overpriced and, frankly, not that good.
It must be the power of advertising, I guess.

The nature of the Sebo isn't the fact that it needs variable suction; you only get that on cylinders because they use air only and in some cases with Miele an electric brush with its own motor. Sebo make them too and I think you're being unfair to judge a cylinder performance against an upright. ANY upright with a moving brush will attract loose coverings particularly rugs with tassles. And no amount of low to high variable power will stop tassles from being caught up in the turbo brush.
