Good Points: Quick and nimble, feels great!

    Bad Points: Bosch electrical system.

General comments: The Volkswagen Golf Mk1 GTI is the best of the Mk1's. It is very quick and nimble, and it feels like a true sports car. However, it suffers from the typical VW electrical issues.

The Volkswagen Golf Mk1 GTI is just about the best car ever designed by VW, amazing in every aspect, a true boy racer or pocket rocket, a legend amongst legends.

The MK1 golf is a classic and an absolute pleasure to own and drive! The kind of car you can stand and appreciate the genius of for hours and hours on end, and I have yet to meet an owner who the novelty of owning one hasn't worn off yet. These cars perform so well, are reliable, well built, so rarely rust, are light weight, nippy, easy to park and are just a piece of engineering history.
It is also very easy for someone with a little car mechanical know-how, to pick up a cheap rust free bo ...

I have had 3 Volkswagen Golf Mk1 GTI's and they all have made me smile every time I have driven them, even if just to the local shop and back, as I say to people who ask why you have "that old thing" I simply say "If you have to ask the question you will never understand the answer!" The car oozes feel, feedback, and is just a very easy, friendly car to drive. I know it dosn't have all the airbag nonsense etc but if you need that the car you are driving just dosn't talk to you enough before you ...

Very proud owner of two Mk1 Golf GTi. One Schwartz Black and the other Diamond Silver. The 112 bhp, light body, exquisite handling and GTi fuel injection system provides sheer, unadulterated power and a passion to just keep on driving.

The best part about driving a Mk1 Golf Gti is putting some of todays so called "BIG BOYS" to shame as they still cannot live up to the godfather of all hatches even by todays standards.

For those who like the Japanese car scene, I have no objection, but one ...

It takes skill to drive and keep yourself out of trouble what can I say apart from....I own a campaign 1.8 GTI in black and everywhere I go people that know anything about a car look at it. I get stopped in the street (literally) when I'm in it and asked if I will sell it.

mk1 golf well what can i say, i own one, infact it is my first car and when i got it over a year and a half ago i thought old car hmmpp but when i discovered that my little 1.1 engine could muller saxo's , nova's etc of roughley the same engine i realised that i was driving the daddy and that the only thing that might turn as many heads is a tidy lanca delta integrally because of its rally pedigree. I'm hoping to stick an explosive mk2 1.8 gti engine in there soon and blow away the losers in any ...

I've got a 1.3 mk1 golf which i've spent most of my time and money making it look like a gti, however the engine and electrics are now playing up forcing the car off the road. I am finding it hard to find the £450 to get it in ship shape order as my income is below £100 a week because i'm still in education. However I have found the lighter mk1 body makes the car very nimble and fast for a 1.3, which is helped in my opinion by the very sweet 4 speed box when around town and off the m ...

I have had a lot of the classic hot hatches, astra gte mk1, renault 5 turbo and the not so classic but excellent polo g40. But I have to say that the golf MK1 comes out on top, I have got two. A nice soft top for the summer with a 2.0 ltr 8v lump and for the winter a campaign to run round in and they are great. Both almost 20 years old and still going strong.

I had a Uno turbo 1996 model. It was a great car. 220 kph. This car got stolen- typically South Africa. After that I bought a Golf MK1 gti. I repainted it, fitted a 2.0 lump and there we go,as good as new.Reliable, cheap and very fast and everone looks at you when u'r cruisin. Choose between the Uno and Golf, I would say the Golf mk1 cause it sticks and I can buy a new shell for about $150 if I crash mine.

VW Golf Mk1 GTI: What's this about unos?? Come on.. it's a turbo for a start, and, if you look, only a fraction quicker than the mk1! Less reliable! Looks terrible! Do not handle! I had an uno turbo but now got a mk1! It's quick, reliable, very good handling! Feels solid! Oh wait, it's twenty years old and still turns heads! So do not dis the mk1 until you have driven and/or owned one!!
