Good Points: Views out to sea, some of the local people when you got to know them, average food in the hotel - but in my opinion there are much better options close by - so do use those.

Bad Points: Dirty bedrooms with broken appliances, including balcony doors that wouldn't lock, wall mounted table that was loose and in my opinion unsafe. Filthy bathrooms with mouldy, slimy tiles that never got cleaned properly. No water in the hotel for two days. We found the majority of staff lazy and rude - with the exception of 1-2. The management/owners were awful with us - we found them rude, uncaring, seem to use the place as their playground at the expense of paying guests. The website could mis sell the place - rooms are below my basic standard and bathrooms we saw and used not fit for purpose. The dive operation came across as was very poor - no briefings, overcrowded boats, underfills of tanks. If you are not an advanced diver beware! Similarly, if you don't take your own equipment, watch out for leading hoses and tanks.

General comments: We found Manta Lodge very very basic, and we couldn't tell this from it's website. The rooms our group stayed in didn't resemble anything that is shown on the website.

With improved management, a major overhaul of the bathrooms, deep cleaning, renovation, staff training, this place could be a decent standard. Until then, you have been warned!

The Manta Lodge is a bit off the beaten track. Possibly too basic for some tastes. Speyside makes "laid- back" seem positively dynamic. Apart from diving and bird watching ( both excellent ) there's not much to do. That may not bother honeymooners unless they are seeking sophistication. Little is available in the shops, there is no chemist or doctor nearby and you have to travel for well over an hour to get to the relatively developed and lively main town Scarbrough. A car is worth hiring but c ...
