“30 yards is my minimum range for shooting..TRY 200...”

I HAVE SHOT MANY A PIDGEON, ROOK, CROW AND RAT WITH THIS FANTASTIC SMK 17 AIR RIFLE. I DON'T KNOW WHERE THE 30 YARD ACCURACY COMES FROM. BUT WAS TOLD ABOUT THIS IN THE SHOP WHERE THE RIFLE WAS PURCHASED AS WELL. I LIVE IN THE OPEN COUNTRYSIDE AND NOT A BACKYARD TO SHOOT. SO THE 30 YARD RANGE DOES NOT APPLY TOO ME. YOU WILL BE AMAZED AT THE DISTANCE THIS RIFLE WILL KILL A BIRD STONE DEAD WITH JUST 1 SHOT. WE ALL KNOW BIRDS HAVE VERY GOOD EYESIGHT DON'T WE. SO DISTANCE IS MY APPROACH RATHER… Read Full Review

I have had the SMK 17 as my main air rifle for 8 years now & have never felt the need to upgrade it. I have fired load of supposedly top end high priced rifles & the SMK 17 is on par with the best of them.
With a decent scope this rifle is very accurate & very powerful & will easily kill a Pigeon etc. at 150 yards with one shot.
I am still amazed how cheap these rifles sell for & how underrated they are but I would recommend it to anyone interested in a serious air rifle.
Look after it & keep it well greased/oiled & it'll give you years of Grade A shooting.

“SMK XS17/Z17/Model17 ”

Written on: 18/12/2009 by KenH (1 review written)

SMK XS17/Z17/Model17
I bought this rifle for my son but now we bicker over who is shooting when :)
It was bought from a local RFD and I sourced a 4x28 scope myself. Total cost of combo £80.
Initial thoughts are basically, what a bargain!

The gun itself looks well made, stock quality is much better than expected. I's a .22 and I've no proper chrony of power so no idea about that yet. Cocking the weapon for the first couple of shots was a little noisy but that has settled. The trigger is… Read Full Review

SMK 17 is a very good rifle for a younger person about 14, it is a break barel so it is quick to load, it is as acurate as you can get on a break barel, you can buy a .22 or .177, they are great value for money at about £70, it has a very good automatic safety feature whitch at first is very anoying but after a few shots it is second nature to remember to take it off, i purchased the .177 but i would rather have bought the .22 now i can look back, it has a rail to fix most scopes to it is idal… Read Full Review

Good all round gun. Safety catch can get annoying as automatically comes on everytime you cock the gun, not good for speed shooting e.g. shooting rats in a barn where you don't always have time to remove the safety if your going to hit your target! It is very accurate… Read Full Review

Written on: 21/05/2007 by badmofo (5 reviews written)

Very reliable, solid, good fun air rifle. You get what you pay for and it is indeed cheap! Though not to knock it at all - there are plenty of inferior air rifles on the market in the same price range as this one! (£70-100) The first thing i noticed when firing this gun is the awfully heavy single stage trigger, i consider it the biggest single flaw of the rifle, otherwise it really would be as good as the budget models of more prestigious manufacturers; consequently this interferes with the… Read Full Review

“All around nice rifle, seems to be more popular in...”

Written on: 10/05/2007 by bobmcpop (1 review written)

All around nice rifle, seems to be more popular in sportshops than online. Good power (9-10ft/lbs, realistically about 7-8) for price. Fit a good scope on and this will be a class rifle.

Absolutely recommended for new shooters with a low budget; experienced rifle owners will tell you NEVER to go for SMK, but with nothing else to compare to the SMK 17 is about as economic as springers go!

Absolutely NOT recommended if you've owned any other previous (BSA/Webley/AA etc) rifle.

Beware that… Read Full Review

Badmofo's Response to bobmcpop's Review

Written on: 19/05/2007

Yeah i've just bought one of these recently and id go with this review. Chronographed mine at 8.76ft/lbs, which is a little disappointing - i like to be as close to twelve as possible! I might try and up the power a wee bit to get it closer to twelve, but with SMK build quality I'm afraid it'll fall to pieces!

Just to let you know it dose come in .177 but i would recommend the .22 as the speed of the .177 makes it harder to zero

Rthedodge's Response to bobmcpop's Review

Written on: 22/05/2007

A repost.

I find this review and subsequent comment to hinge on this rifles power. Agreed £70 - £100 is not a lot of money for a "plinker" but why complain about build quality and power at that sort of money? Power means the pellet may go further but not necessarily on target. SMK's are a low cost gun for use in enclosed spaces like peoples back gardens where there is no reason for great power. With the trigger its a question of engineering, low cost means cheap and cheerful engineering. The mere thought of someone using a gun like this for hunting fills me with dread.
