“Wheres the rest?”

Written on: 17/02/2013 by LindenWeaver

Arrived at 1430 on a sunday, took an HOUR for our main (roast dinner and a salad) to be served, whilst tables around us (who arrived later) were served theirs. Waited 10 minutes for the accompanying vegetables before having to ASK for them Come dessert, ordering a FIVE layer Carrot cake, it arrived and was 20 minutes later but only THREE layers with the bottom obviously having been broken off...when I enquired, I was told they would get me a fresh one... 10 minutes later (the husband had... “Worst Sunday Roast Ever Had”

Written on: 23/12/2012 by Tewy (1 review written)

Went for a Christmas meal with others, partner and I had roast beef meal with all of the trimmings. Meat was average, (sliced not carved) mash potatoes were instant and everything else from a packet. Waitress asked if all was ok and I said no - that's as far as it went. I would get far better at a Wetherspoons. It goes without saying that I would not dream of setting foot in the place again. “Disgusting - never again”

Written on: 29/11/2012

We have often had some lovely meals at the Peacock in the past, so were keen to try it again under the new management - Big mistake. Initially we were quite impressed with the changes until we ordered our meals. I wished to order the sea-bass, one of my favourites but noticed it came with a rosotto which I don't really like, so requested some dauphinoise potatoes, which were also included with my husbands meal so didn't think it would be a problem. After a while our waiter informed me the... (read more)

“Not as good as The Dog and Duck”

Written on: 02/11/2012

We visited on a Thursday evening and found that although there were a few people drinking, not many were eating. The decor is similar to the sister pub in Old Clipstone and the menu is identical. My friend & I both ordered the steak and ale pie with homemade chips, as it is a favourite of ours at the Dog and Duck. What a disappointment it was! it arrived less than 5 minutes after ordering. My pie was crusty to one side of the wedge, as if it had been cut for hours. It was barely warm... (read more)

“Sunday lunch review”

Written on: 07/10/2012

Arrived at Peacock for Sunday lunch booking 3.00pm. All the starters were fine, but when it came to main courses, different story! The pie my partner got was hard and dry, I would have sent it back, but he didnt want to upset day by doing so. The steaks we ordered were supposed to be med rare, what a joke, no blood on show, they were more like well done, which made them dry and tasteless.Because a comment was made regarding the pie, the waitress, who was clearly not in good humour!never came... “Disappointing”

Written on: 26/08/2012

This was recommended by a friend who said it was excellent. lovely pub and seated straight away on arrival. However, drinks took over 15 minutes to arrive after ordering yet the bar was empty so would have been better to go to the bar ourselves. Although realised later this wasn't the done thing despite the waiting staff being overly busy. Was asked if we were ready to order food and asked them to give us another minute; took another 10-15 minutes for someone to come back. We ordered a... (read more)

“Quality!”

So we're new to the area (Shirland) and have been trying some of the local eateries recently namely The Greyhound (generic pub rubbish), The White Bear (over priced and over hyped don't believe the reviews quaint it is value it isn't!) and we avoided The Peacock due to the reviews we'd seen which were less than impressive however when the Mrs came home from a Hen do and I'd returned from a lads weekend neither of us could be bothered to cook so we thought we'd give it a shot! Written on: 10/04/2012

Last time we were here 18 months ago, we walked in and walked straight out. This time we were pleased to see the new owners (Same as Hurt Arms, Ambergate) had taken over and changed the menu and are refurbishing next week, can't wait to see the results. It was very busy today and the staff were friendly and helpful, the food is gastro/pub style with good portions. (read more)

“Staff problems here!”

Written on: 06/03/2012 by CherylGrx (1 review written)

Lunch, 6/03/12. Cod in batter & chips - cod overcooked, almost burnt, fish very dry. Chips undercooked, still solid. (NB the Lasagne, salad, garlic bread meal was excellent.) Staff failed to check meals OK. Our complaint about the fish & chip meals was met with "I'll tell the chef," no apology whatsoever. "Sorry," would have been appreciated. Needless to say, we won't be returning. (read more)

“Disappointing Sunday lunch”

Written on: 17/02/2012

11of us went for Sunday lunch 12th feb - what a shambles the starters were disappointing and expensive when the main course was served (eventually after about 1 hour) we were served with pork instead of turkey. When we questioned this we were told that we had defiantly been served turkey but I am sorry I do know the difference and it was defiantly pork. The rest of the meal was average the service poor and the staff had a very bad attitude .when we were presented with the bill it came with... (read more)

First of all Christmas decorations and music was on with Xmas napkins. All staff looke like they couldnt be bothered and the restaurant was freezing cold. I had a burger and without over exaggerating t was absolutely vile the burger tasted like a frozen burger that had been cooked cooled down and re heated back up the cheese on it had definatly been microwaved. Never again! I visited the Peacock over the weekend with my family but will never go again. I ordered Cottage Pie as it is one of my favourites and impossible to get wrong - or so I thought. I felt sorry for the waitress who had to bring it out as she knew it it wasn't cottage pie. How can a bit of meat with no potato be called cottage pie? This was a pathetic attempt at a British classic. It had to go back. When it came back the manageress brought the food out and was not at all appologetic... (read more)

Written on: 25/03/2011

Visited for lunch today (25th March 2011) and ordered cheese and onion pie with hand cut chips and seasonal vegetables which sounded really tempting. What arrived was truly awful - the 'pie' was actually a gratin dish full of white sauce with some onions and a little cheese added with a puff pastry top. I expected a cheese and onion pie to be filled with more cheese than any other ingredient! The pastry was only just cooked and the filling was luke warm. The seasonal vegetables were 1... I visited the pub several months ago, at a distant time when the pub was busy, and was sent Raw Sausage. Returned just recently to realise that although the pub has now been taken under new management, the same chef was there, as well as many of the waiting staff (No changes), clearly there are many issues as the pub was deserted.
The meal was acceptable, but not of the high standards i would have expected from the prices i paid (More like a 2 for £10 pub, did not... (read more)

Old favourites were still there, but not the same recipes,[totally agree about cheese, leek and potato pie, always my favourite.] Things are getting better, staff couldn,t be more helpful. We ordered steak, gammon and a kids chicken nugget meal. Nothing unusual there. However it wasn't until our meals arrived we were told they had no tomato ketchup??? Kids are kids - nuggets and gammon always come with ketchup. We told the waitress she should have told us this when the meal was ordered and we could have ordered something else. There was no offer to change our meals or no offer of discount. She said they had ran out. A big pub like this you would have thought someone... (read more)

After reading other peoples comments on the new management at the peacock and the possible improvement since our own disastrous meal in May we decided to try it again. It has definitely improved. This time the pie was served with a crust on the top and meat was edible (unlike last time when there was no crust and the meat was straight out of a tin). There were more chips and they were hand cut - a nice touch and far too rare in the restaurant business. Still not as good as the original... (read more)

I have been going to the peacock for years now and have never been disappointed with any of the service or food that I have received. As people have mentioned it has been taken over by new owners however I do not feel that this is a bad thing, the Peacock still has well mannered staff and offers a lovely selection of food, which as pointed out is more expensive than it previously was but still in my view nothing excessive. We too have been to the Peacock on numerous occasions and have found that the food is of excellent quality and plentiful, with polite and chatty staff and excellent value for money. They even do a cheap and cheerful burger and chips for around a pound I think it was on a Monday evening. Alternatively a full freshly cooked locally sourced meal which are normally huge can be had. However the last time I went was probably some months ago and reading the reviews the place seems to have changed... (read more)

We had eaten at the peacock on many previous occasions and had enjoyed good quality food at excellent prices but on this bank holiday monday the meal was atrocious. We had to wait for an age and when it arrived it was not worth eating. The peacock has obviously changed hands and I'm afriad to say wont be in business much longer. We have also been eating at the Peacock for over 9 years, always feeling full and satisfied with the excellent value for money food on offer. This pub has recently changed hands with a dramatic fall in custom. The place was almost deserted at 12.45pm on a Saturday, previously unthinkable. We now realise why, new menu, higher prices, fewer choices. The new owners need to realise this is Derbyshire not London, a chip is a chip not a crisp, as my wife found out when she ordered a Cheese & Onion... (read more)

The Peacock at Oakerthorpe has recently changed hands and where as before they served very nice food at a reasonable price this is now not the case. We visited on 3rd May 2010 at lunchtime and 45 minutes after ordering our food had still not been served. Upon complaining we were told they had run out of gammon for 2 of the meals and would we like to reorder. We then had to wait another 25 minutes before our meals were served. There is plenty of seating, indoors and out at The Peacock restaurant in Oakerthorpe, and a well isolated no-smoking area. The Peacock has been a regular escape for Lunch and Dinner when I can't be bothered to cook. Very reasonable prices for basic, good food. Pub favourites such as gammon, steak, scampi are joined by tuna and swordfish steaks, chilli and tikka masala.
