“Bad steaks”

★★☆☆☆

written by po51old on 23/06/2014

we have some friends over from Australia and decided to go for a meal at the Peacock Oakerthorpe, having heard it was very nice. How wrong we were.we ordered our meal of four steaks all we were told from Derbyshire, our steaks duly arrived, very nicely presented,I had my first taste of my steak and thought funny taste my second piece did not improve,as i had a T bone i tried a piece from the other side of the bone,it was inedible it smelt awful.trying to keep our guests happy and relaxed i got the waiters attention and quietly asked him to return the offending meal to the chef for him to see and smell, the waiter made quite a scene wanting to know what was wrong and why (he may have been hard of hearing?)on me virtually ordering him back to the kitchen he went. Now all the restaurant was aware of a problem.he came back a short while later and said the chef agreed it was wrong and that another steak was on the grill.Five or six minutes later my fresh steak arrived but by now the rest of the party had finished their meal that left me eating while all watched no further mention no visit from chef no visit from management a little sorry would have gone a long way.the australians were shocked and said it should never have happened and a good meal/event was ruined only bad memories for the Peacock

“Very disappointed”

★★☆☆☆

written by chrissy125 on 04/08/2013

Just had lunch, 4th August 2013.We both had steak and was not given steak knives, when asked if we would like anything else I asked for butter, as I had jacket potato, which never arrived and my husband had the stilton sauce which had something very long and gunky in it. The waiter said it was probably some unmelted cheese but couldn't be sure. The food was nothing special and definitely not worth the price. The service leaves a lot to be desired either very slow or none existent.

“Wheres the rest?”

★☆☆☆☆

written by LindenWeaver on 17/02/2013

Arrived at 1430 on a sunday, took an HOUR for our main (roast dinner and a salad) to be served, whilst tables around us (who arrived later) were served theirs. Waited 10 minutes for the accompanying vegetables before having to ASK for them Come dessert, ordering a FIVE layer Carrot cake, it arrived and was 20 minutes later but only THREE layers with the bottom obviously having been broken off...when I enquired, I was told they would get me a fresh one... 10 minutes later (the husband had eaten his cheesecake)...they returned the original slice (which I'd cut into) with ONE additional layer put next to it...WHERE WAS THE OTHER LAYER??...3+1=4....not five...and you dont have icing on the bottom of a cake..so clearly there was still one missing... WHAT WAS GOING ON?! £33 for two drinks, two almost complete mains and nearly 2 puddings. Poor food, bad service, disinterested staff.

“Worst Sunday Roast Ever Had”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Tewy on 23/12/2012

Went for a Christmas meal with others, partner and I had roast beef meal with all of the trimmings. Meat was average, (sliced not carved) mash potatoes were instant and everything else from a packet. Waitress asked if all was ok and I said no - that's as far as it went. I would get far better at a Wetherspoons. It goes without saying that I would not dream of setting foot in the place again.

“Disgusting - never again”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 29/11/2012

We have often had some lovely meals at the Peacock in the past, so were keen to try it again under the new management - Big mistake. Initially we were quite impressed with the changes until we ordered our meals. I wished to order the sea-bass, one of my favourites but noticed it came with a rosotto which I don't really like, so requested some dauphinoise potatoes, which were also included with my husbands meal so didn't think it would be a problem. After a while our waiter informed me the chef could not do this as he only had them available for other meals on the menu, so asked if I could have new potatoes instead - no was the reply, he would only do the meal exactly as on the menu. With that I decided to order the steak pie instead (about half the price of the sea-bass) After a wait of over an hour our meal finally arrived. My husband had ordered the lamb and was completely disgusted by the size and quality of his meal. There we three tiny pieces of lamb (around the size of a 50p piece) on top of what was supposed to be dauphinoise potatoes, which can only be described as a small spoonfull of a curdled looking slop that did not resemble dauphinoise potato in any way along with a tiny amount of vegetables and at £15 one of the worst meals we have ever been served anywhere ! My husband had to resort to sharing my pie. We did complain and the waitress we spoke to (and is the only reason we have given it a 1 star rating )was very apologetic and agreed not to charge us for the lamb. Our evening was completely ruined (a birthday meal) by all of this and would cetainly never return again ! Get a new chef !!

“Not as good as The Dog and Duck”

★★☆☆☆

written by on 02/11/2012

We visited on a Thursday evening and found that although there were a few people drinking, not many were eating. The decor is similar to the sister pub in Old Clipstone and the menu is identical. My friend & I both ordered the steak and ale pie with homemade chips, as it is a favourite of ours at the Dog and Duck. What a disappointment it was! it arrived less than 5 minutes after ordering. My pie was crusty to one side of the wedge, as if it had been cut for hours. It was barely warm but it was obvious that it had been microwaved as the pastry, which is normally lovely, was soggy and floppy. We didn't get chips at all. Instead we had halves and wedges of cooked potato that had been briefly dipped in the fryer. They were horrid! We should have complained but didn't - if they can't tell when bringing out such substandard meals that there is a problem, then complaining won't achieve anything. It wasn't even like they were busy. However, neither of us will be back. £9 for cold pie and leftover potatoes is not good value for money. A case of more style than substance.

“Sunday lunch review”

★★☆☆☆

written by on 07/10/2012

Arrived at Peacock for Sunday lunch booking 3.00pm. All the starters were fine, but when it came to main courses, different story! The pie my partner got was hard and dry, I would have sent it back, but he didnt want to upset day by doing so. The steaks we ordered were supposed to be med rare, what a joke, no blood on show, they were more like well done, which made them dry and tasteless.Because a comment was made regarding the pie, the waitress, who was clearly not in good humour!never came back to see if everything was ok, or we would have told her. A lot of money for a poor meal. Eight lost customers!!! You need to review some of your staff.

“Disappointing”

★★★☆☆

written by on 26/08/2012

This was recommended by a friend who said it was excellent. lovely pub and seated straight away on arrival. However, drinks took over 15 minutes to arrive after ordering yet the bar was empty so would have been better to go to the bar ourselves. Although realised later this wasn't the done thing despite the waiting staff being overly busy. Was asked if we were ready to order food and asked them to give us another minute; took another 10-15 minutes for someone to come back. We ordered a roast pork dinner, medium steak and a scampi with jacket potato for the 3 of us. The jacket potato came with a big wedge of butter so as a dieter this wasn't appreciated, although that is personal taste. However, many places have the butter separate so people can choose. The steak was well-done not medium and very tough to eat. No one came to ask if everything was ok so we had to find a waitress to let them know; however, didn't want another as the other 2 in the party were already half way through eating. A discount or voucher offer would have been nice but was never mentioned again; at no point were we asked if everything was ok. The chips on the meal were the best and the roast pork dinner that my 86 year old dad had looked nice. Need more staff probably and they need to be more attentive, with better attention paid to the food served. Some people will love this pub but for us it isn't worth the effort to return I'm afraid when plenty of other better choices around (we go out every Sunday so are getting a flavour of what is expected at decent places lol).

“Quality!”

★★★★★

written by on 16/05/2012

So we're new to the area (Shirland) and have been trying some of the local eateries recently namely The Greyhound (generic pub rubbish), The White Bear (over priced and over hyped don't believe the reviews quaint it is value it isn't!) and we avoided The Peacock due to the reviews we'd seen which were less than impressive however when the Mrs came home from a Hen do and I'd returned from a lads weekend neither of us could be bothered to cook so we thought we'd give it a shot! We were welcomed at the door and shown to a table amid really nice surrounding chestefield chairs, sofa's and a grand piano which gave it some real character. We both ordered Steak Pie, after a long weekend on the ale we both wanted Chips and Gravy (unforgivable I know) and it was fantastic, a large slice with home made chips and seasonal veg the only thing that would've made it better was if there was another portion!! We enjoyed it so much we're taking friends this Friday, so give it a try it's a great pub with even better food we'll be making it our local that's for sure!!!

“New Menu, New Makeover April 2012”

★★★★★

written by on 10/04/2012

Last time we were here 18 months ago, we walked in and walked straight out. This time we were pleased to see the new owners (Same as Hurt Arms, Ambergate) had taken over and changed the menu and are refurbishing next week, can't wait to see the results. It was very busy today and the staff were friendly and helpful, the food is gastro/pub style with good portions.

“Staff problems here!”

★★☆☆☆

written by CherylGrx on 06/03/2012

Lunch, 6/03/12. Cod in batter & chips - cod overcooked, almost burnt, fish very dry. Chips undercooked, still solid. (NB the Lasagne, salad, garlic bread meal was excellent.) Staff failed to check meals OK. Our complaint about the fish & chip meals was met with "I'll tell the chef," no apology whatsoever. "Sorry," would have been appreciated. Needless to say, we won't be returning.

“Disappointing Sunday lunch”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 17/02/2012

11of us went for Sunday lunch 12th feb - what a shambles the starters were disappointing and expensive when the main course was served (eventually after about 1 hour) we were served with pork instead of turkey. When we questioned this we were told that we had defiantly been served turkey but I am sorry I do know the difference and it was defiantly pork. The rest of the meal was average the service poor and the staff had a very bad attitude .when we were presented with the bill it came with a sarcastic comment that there were definatly 11 mints - a dig at the earlier confusion regarding the turkey. we will never use this pub again and would like to warn anyone who is thinking about going there to be on their guard.

“Meal on Saturday 7th jan”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Charlie1530 on 07/01/2012

First of all Christmas decorations and music was on with Xmas napkins. All staff looke like they couldnt be bothered and the restaurant was freezing cold. I had a burger and without over exaggerating t was absolutely vile the burger tasted like a frozen burger that had been cooked cooled down and re heated back up the cheese on it had definatly been microwaved. The bin was just a basic cob and was soggy. The chips it was served with however were very nice and did eat those. Nobody came to check the meal was ok and when the young girl collected the plates despite the whole burger being left bar a couple of bites no one questioned if there was anything wrong with it. I will not be revisiting again as it was really really horrible food

“We have being going to Oakerthorpe regualry over the...”

★★☆☆☆

written by on 22/05/2011

We have being going to Oakerthorpe regualry over the last 3-4 years and continued to go slightly less through the transition period. We have very rarely being disappointed until the last few weeks, the old staff were lovely helpful and listened to your comments, the new young staff dont seem to know what to do and are quite ignorant. Our last meal was a couple of weeks ago and haven't bothered since because the last couple of times the food has been cold and my dessert was still frozen I tried to tell the waitress it was also the wrong dessert and still frozen and she just blanked me so after a few uncomfortable visits we have decided to give up, it used to a great meal for good value and have lovely staff. What a great shame.
